Not poker related:

I think one way you can tell how MGM's presence is affecting the market is by looking at the lowest limit being offered for table games.

Last night I played a few hours at MDL and took a break to wander around. I was pretty surprised to see $10 Blackjack (3-2, stand on soft 17) running on at least two tables. IIRC, $10 BJ was already pretty rare at MDL, let alone on a Saturday night (correct me if I am wrong here).

I also spotted at least one $10 craps table during my wanderings.

For those of us who like to gamble on table games every now and then, the question is whether MDL will follow HSB and MGM down the path of 6-5/hit soft 17 for lower limits...

Just visited MGM-NH this week while stuck in NH for work.

Very interesting casino you guys have there. Nice facility, good food options, like the non-smoking casino floor. Poker room was packed and running a variety of games on Sunday evening, and on Wednesday early afternoon. Didn't expect that much traffic in the middle of the week.

I found the table dynamics at the $1/3 NLHE very weird compared to my experience in other places. Both tables I played at gave me almost entirely green $25 chips, and most of the chips on the table were green too. This didn't seem to make too much difference making change for limpers as we all ended up with some $5s, But it seemed to constrain the post flop action. People were betting primarily in increments of $25, so $25 into a ~$20 pot on the flop, or $25 into $50. Also made it really hard to determine stack sizes from across a table. Is that 6 chips? Or 8? 10 or 12? If you're off a couple of red chips when making a decision about how to plan a hand it's not a big deal, but a couple of green chips can be expensive.

Did I just get weird tables, or is that something you guys have commonly in the area?

I'll definitely be coming back the next time I'm in DC for work.

Very common at MGM. Not really at MDL. Not sure about HSB but I don't think so.

MDL and HSB ask players to make their first buy at the cage and players buying at the cage typically buy red. MGM allows first buy at the table and though they stock more red in the well if you buy in for $400 you're likely getting at least $300 in greens.

At MDL a table with a lot of green on it might indicate a good game. Players felted who rebuy at the table will typically get green.

Considering: MGM, Horseshoe, Live and I suppose Charles Town . . .

Of the current regularly running tournaments, which are the best value/structure and why?

HS used to have a decent $365 Saturday or Sunday (I forget whcih day), but don;t think it is offered anymore.

All of MD Live $400-$500 multi days are great tournaments. 30/40 min levels with a decent player and prize pool for the entry. The $500 Live 5 with a $200 bounty is decent if you like bounties.

CT has nothing regular, but I play in the HPO $1000 buy in each year. Multi day that starts at 50 min levels.

Balancing the buy-in, payouts, and length of levels I find these to be the best value.

apparently the poker room at Horseshoe in Indiana charges a handling fee to "handle" the promo fund.

the jackpot drops in Maryland poker rooms is 100% returned to the players, right?

I don't know the answer to that, but my best guess is MD law demands that 100% of the funds be returned to the players. Shoot Mike or Johnny a PM and ask; I'm sure they'd be happy to answer.

I posted this thread in the marketplace about looking for a room near mdl or MGM if anyone knows anyone. Currently staying at aloft or red roof and burning a lot of money that way.

Anyone know if the triangle on the $25 chip is a Maryland regulation? I noticed that both MDL and MGM have it - sort of between the 2 and 5. Not sure if HSB has it on their greens. Figured we might want to start illuminati rumors.

Yes, and they're done in the font of Alphabet Soup. The Feds are going to make a raid when they finish at the Bike. It has to stop.

I don't know about reliably. I had to hustle to get the game started four-handed last Saturday. It broke after about 8 hours. I started a list tonight, but it only got two names.

The Maryland State Gaming Commission has to post the money won by casinos each month. They break it up into categories, and there is one category for "non banked games" which basically means poker (other tables games you play against a "bank"). So it is easy to see how much each casino made from poker each month. All the stats are available at http://gaming.mdlottery.com/financial-reporting/

I only see the last 10 months posted. The previous ones are probably still on the web site, but I was mostly interested in seeing how MGM changes the poker scene when it opened in December 2016. Here are the stats I gathered from that web site (no guarantee I didn't make any mistakes copying/pasting, but it should be mostly correct):

2017 Non-banked games revenue

April 2017
MGM $1,735,761.00
Horseshoe $513,986.00
Maryland Live $1,415,476.00
Hollywood Perryville $92,942.00

March 2017
MGM $1,768,988.00
Horseshoe $469,799.00
Maryland Live $1,524,579.00
Hollywood Perryville $113,468.00

February 2017
MGM $1,619,441.01
Horseshoe $401,830.00
Maryland Live $1,567,083.00
Hollywood Perryville $95,158.00

January 2017
MGM $1,806,791.00
Horseshoe $440,372.00
Maryland Live $1,581,390.00
Hollywood Perryville $93,407.00

December 2016
MGM $1,412,021.00
Horseshoe $503,047.00
Maryland Live $1,871,491.00
Hollywood Perryville $88,755.00

November 2016
Horseshoe $630,103.00
Maryland Live $1,965,323.00
Hollywood Perryville $77,837.00

October 2016
Horseshoe $650,367.00
Maryland Live $2,022,016.00
Hollywood Perryville $84,367.00

September 2016
Horseshoe $617,758.00
Maryland Live $2,037,388.00

August 2016
Horseshoe $659,907.25
Maryland Live $2,050,122.00
Hollywood Perryville $78,376.00

Hi guys, looking for a little advice:

I'm going to be moving to the area in August and working right next to the Rosslyn metro stop in Arlington. Making the decision where to live, I would ideally be able to fit in poker several times per week and it seems like MGM is the best bet, but don't know if I will be buying a car or not. Google tells me I can take the metro and then a bus, but I'd prefer something simpler/more direct/safer(?) and it looks like an uber will cost about $20 one way, not exactly ideal either. There is a shuttle in Chicago that runs from the city to Horseshoe Hammond, does something similar exist there? Or would it be better just to suck it up and get a car?

Thanks

Rosslyn is a great spot for a car-less lifestyle. I'm not aware of any great alternative options for getting to mgm though.

Thanks. Yeah, my sister lived in Rosslyn for three years, she had a car the first year but sold it because she rarely used it and her parking spot was like $150 per month. Maybe I'll take the metro/bus to get there and then uber it back.

How is the area around MGM? I lived in NE for a while near 14th and Maryland, that is about as sketchy as I am comfortable with. Someone was shot dead in front of the house I lived in like a week before I moved in which the landlord forgot to mention, but if I avoided walking at night and walked towards the capitol instead of away I was fine. The area seemed to be gentrifying while I was there and I haven't been to DC in several years now, so some of the situations could have improved.

Big difference between sides of the river near MGM. But it sounds like you'd be ok with many of the neighborhoods on the MD side.

I have no idea if there are tax implications that you should consider.

You could still do the no-car thing near some of the yellow line stops, not sure which ones exactly.

$5 for draft beer at MDL.
$7 for bottled beer at MGMNH.

Sorry I don't have more complete information. Hopefully others will chime in.

My experiences:

MDL has $4 bud light drafts, $5 Stella & other "real" brews on tap. $6 miller light bottle, which I assume is also going rate for other domestics. $6 well drinks, $8 makers mark, $10 woodford reserve.

Shoe I think has some specials depending on where you buy, the price seems to vary bar to bar. But perhaps $1 cheaper on average than live?

Going to be doing a road trip to aee Maryland Live, Horseshoe and MGM in the Baltimore area. It will be a poker trip so im looking to keep expense ls low. Can any frequent travellers or locals recommend affordable hotel options? Perhaps a small drive from the casino? Or are there poker room rates at these casinos?
