Anyone have any pointers on playing the shortstacks (or book rec's)? I've ended up going to Crystal simply to avoid the 20bb cap. Is there anything to do (aside from bingo for a hand or two) or running it down to half stack and then rebuying to get to 30 bb's?

Yeah. It's not that cheap, though.

My pointer is head to The Bike.

If you're looking for a good 1/2NL game in LA, you're sol. Unless you enjoy sitting there with 20 big blinds and getting raked up the ass. Don't bother playing NL in LA unless you're playing the 2/3 $300 at the Bike or higher. Limit is fine because they can't mess with the buy-in structure, but again the rake is very high until at least 8/16.

I know the Commerce has a nice hotel but are there any other recommendations of where to stay? I will mainly be playing at the Bike next month for their Circuit Series so I would prefer to stay near there.

I hear the Comfort Inn is close to the Bike by but kind of gross to stay at.

Thanks

I usually find leaving Friday night not too bad. I think the worst time to try and go on a friday is basically anytime after 2 up until about 8. Everyday so cal late afternoon/rush hour traffic coupled with the 15's weekend traffic trying to get out of town to vegas and the river etc makes things horrible.

I totally agree with coming back though. I never ever leave on a Sunday afternoon or late morning. I either get up super early sunday morning or I leave sunday night or just stay until monday or tuesday. Not too many things worse then getting stuck in traffic going back and it turns into a 6 hour drive.

Moving to the area in January -- anywhere spread 10/20+ LO8 or Stud 8?

Main casinos that spread 2/5 or 5/5 1k+ max? Will try out the Bike and Commerce but am wondering if HG, Hustler, etc are worth my time?

8/16 FK o/8 @ Bike daily. Also, 5/5 1K runs, was running pretty much every nite last week, Sat-Tues (yeah, xmas nite)
HG would be quite a drive for me from in-laws, but have seens some pretty big games there. Hustler can have what you are looking for, just not as much table choices.

Will check out the Bike then...plan on playing some LATB anyhow. Crazy that there isn't a bigger O8 game around.

Was reading about HG security issues, etc...likely not somewhere that I'd want to play I am guessing.

Played at Bike this weekend and walking through the parking lot I saw a few black Bicycle (the playing card company) chips on the ground behind a couple cars. Are people trying to pass these off as valid casino chips and trying to sell them in the parking lot or something? I can't imagine any other reason for them being there. The only markings on them is the word "Bicycle".

^^Never seen or heard of that. I did hear a rumor of improving the rewards for playing at the plaza level. Apparently every scan will be worth $4 but not sure if they would remove the comped free food.

The middle aged white male who does the scans was telling a player about this but said nothing was finalized.

Personally The Bike is my favorite casino in LA currently and looking forward to the Hotel being constructed.

Plenty of people know about it. It's definitely been discussed on the forums before. This thread just doesn't get much traffic.

Yeah, with about 5 posts lol.

The Commerce thread is sorta the de facto Los Angeles thread.

The HP 20-40 OE has been discussed on the OE forum for sure. I guess it's kinda hard to find in a search though because most people don't usually think HP when searching for games in LA.

Can anyone recommend an Elks club or Shriners club or the like in Orange County that has a good regular poker game? I'm retiring soon and am looking for low rake alternatives.

Hi,
I am going to LA March 9 for a week - will play 5-10 nlhe, possibly 10-20 if the game is good. Was planning on playing at commerce, but heard there is a tournament series at the Bike. Would you recommend playing at the Bike during this time or commerce? If I played at the Bike, where could I stay?
Thx in advance.

I would just play at commerce. Way more game selection..the bike may have 1-3 tables of 5/10 if your lucky (maybe a tad more for tournament series but I doubt it). The bikes 5/10 is an uncapped game and at commerce, it plays 1500 max since the last time I've seen it.

Also, you would have to stay at a nearby hotel in Bell Gardens if you were to go to the bike and from what I've heard, they're not all that good. Commerce has its own hotel.

The Bike does offer free food and some pretty good bonuses though right now and they have juicy 5/5 300-1000 $ buy in games.

All in all, they're both good LA casinos but I like Commerce slightly better overall.

Best 10/20 is for sure the commerce $600 game. I would say $5-10 at commerce is still better than bike even with the series going on. It's a low stakes tourney so the $5-10 action isn't really affected too much. $5-5 at bike is pretty good if that's what your looking for. But if you want $5-10 commerce $500-$1500 game is the best bet.

Check them both out! They're like ~10 minutes driving distance apart if you've got a rental car.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but oh well. I'm heading to LA this weekend and I'm wondering what casinos they have there that let 18 year olds play? I'm trying to play some SNG's or smaller tournaments. Thanks for the help everyone!

None in LA. All the major cardrooms are 21+. Closest Indian Casino that allows 18+ would be Morongo out near Palm Springs, about 2 hour drive.

What about more near Laguna Beach/San Diego? I will be going down to Laguna and maybe San Diego this next week too.

Just an FYI - all "card rooms" (i.e., Commerce, Bike, Hustler, Oceans 11, etc.) are 21+ by state law. *Some* (not all) Indian Casinos are 18+.

Sycuan, Barona and Viejas in San Diego are Indian Casinos that allow 18+. All of them are about 2 hour drive south from Laguna Beach, and about 30 minutes from Downtown San Diego.
