All true, but I hate the weather here so much. It snowed yesterday.

OK, I thought you were a native who enjoyed it there generally. I would move to MN myself if there were no such thing as winter.

I want to eventually move to the golden land of LA to play 20/40+ LHE full-time.

I want to move to a nice suburb-like area and buy a house. I have two small dogs so a fenced backyard (even a small one) is a must. Needs to be fairly close to some good LHE casinos.

From the research I've done, it seems like Bell Gardens is a dead-ringer for these criteria, but I've never actually been there. I would be super-close to the Bike and only a few miles away from Commerce. Does anyone here live in Bell Gardens, and if so, how do you like it?

Yeah. Canterbury Park is a great cardroom (or was the one time I played there), but I guess I'm assuming he lives near there. MN is awesome when it's not winter.

Are you prepared to spend $700k+ on that house?

And yeah, Bell Gardens is a ****hole.

Okay thanks guys sounds like Bell Gardens is no good.
I've heard Downey or Long Beach are better choices, or somewhere that's not California at all.

Like I said it's a long ways off so I'll have plenty of time to give it more thought.

Downey is kind of meh, and there are nice parts of Long Beach (which is a pretty big city, so there's all kinds of variety).

If you're looking for a "nice suburb-like area" just know that a lot of areas that fit that description will cost you somewhere near $1m for a decent but basic house. In my neighborhood- which ain't fancy- $1m gets you about 900 sq ft, maybe. Some will be cheaper, some will be higher, but that's about where we are in LA on home prices.

Okay, if I were to consider some locations besides LA, where in the country would be better if I add the following criteria:

1. I'd like to move up to 40/80+. The 40/80 in MN is usually HOE and is usually short-handed and short-lived unless it's the weekend. Occasionally a 40/80 or even 50/100 Hold'em gets running on the weekends but it's pretty rare.
2. I'd like said 40/80+ games to run full-handed frequently.

It looks like San Jose isn't any less expensive than LA, and I don't know how Bay101 and M8trix compare to Commerce and The Bike.
I also don't know much about the Scottsdale and South Florida games, except that lots of people like those areas.

Hardly any limit poker in Florida, and the 40/80 game in Scottsdale is usually a mixed game as well, a much larger mix.

M8trix is NLHE only. You might be able to use Bravo to get an idea of whether the games you want run often enough for your liking at Bay101, but the caveat there is that they are moving to a new building and who knows if the game selection will change or not once they are effectively across the street from M8trix. That move is scheduled for the summer.

You might also want to ask the San Diego page whether 40/80 has been running with regularity at Oceans11. Sometimes it runs multiple times a week, sometimes it's scarce.

I think Arizona is your best bet unless you feel comfortable playing 60 and then maybe Maryland.

As for Oceans, they have officially killed it. Management wasn't helpful in making sure it ran so even the one day a week is now no more.

Me and a buddy are going to LA at the end of June for a weekend.

We plan to play at the Commerce and perhaps visit the Bike and HI Gardens.

Any recommendations on where to stay?
Places to avoid?

We are not big rollers. So the Commerce hotel is way too spendy.

I have stayed down the street at the Motel 6 near the 24 hour Ozzy's.

I see there is a hotel right next to the Bike. Anyone have any info about that place? It's cheap and convenient to both Bike and Commerce (we will have a car).

Thanks for any info!!!

I stayed at the "hotel" across the street from the bike one night so small sample size. Was at the casino most of the time but the few times I went to my room I saw multiple tweakers. Would not return. What's the cost of the bike hotel itself?

Most LA casinos are in dodgy neighborhoods. Not super dangerous or anything but worth the extra 10min drive+$15 a night to stay in slightly better neighborhoods.

Weeknights at Bike: with players card, I've gotten a room for 149, ++, about 170 total. Not a bargain, but they only have 99 rooms, its what their market will bear.

Careful out there ladies and gents.

I checked out Lucky Lady a few weeks back when it was still under construction and it was shaaaaady af. Rolled in there about 1am and there were people hanging out, the type that I wouldn't want to be around, just hanging out in the parking lot. Not just a couple of them eiter, there were 5-10. Security nowhere to be seen.

Hustler does so I'm sure Commerce/Bike also offers them. Can't speak to the smaller ones.

What is the best room in L.A for low stakes NLHE? The rake structures at Bike and Commerce are horrendous and I'm seeking other options

Pretty sure the rake is the same at all LA rooms.

I'm going to be in LA next week for a couple of days. Looking for a place to play 2/5 or 5/5, and would prefer to avoid the terrible structures I hear about in LA, i.e. I'd like to be able to buy in for at least 100 BBs. 5/10 also an option. Will be staying in Santa Monica, so proximity also an important consideration. Suggestions?

Hollywood Park spreads 5/5 (500 max) and 5/T. There will be enough action in the evenings and it will be the closest to SM. GL.

You might look into Ameristar in Blackhawk Colorado, North of Denver. They run a couple 30/60 tables daily and I have seen 50/100 going as well, nothing in between though.

But weather would be comparable to MN and cost of living would be higher I would assume.

You can buyin for 100bb at those stakes anywhere in town. Hollywood Park is the closest but it's a drive to get anywhere.

Try hustler. 5/5 $300-$1000 BI. Same structure as the Bicycle, but a bit closer to Santa Monica and more tables with softer competition. Hollywood Park doesn't have that many 5/5 games going and it's a $500 max BI.
