I'll give my take but still new in London, will appreciate some help.
Just arrived in London a week ago, I've been to the Empire twice this week (Tuesday and Thursday, only 1/2). Maybe I'm overestimating my game, but I feel like many of the regs call a bit too wide and if you are really into the game you can pick up a lot of good bluff spots when they occasionally play their hands face up. I've played a lot of live games in Korea (some underground, some with people I know or people of people I know) so I understand what soft games really do look like (played 2/5 and 5/5/10, made around 10k USD in the summer). The regs make a lot of mistakes too, although there was a stark difference between the table I played on Tuesday and Thursday. The Tuesday game was much nittier, were two Spanish guys, one of whom played really solid and the other bought in 50 quid which seemed like a **** ton of money for him, and a lot of other immigrants playing solid but making a few mistakes here and there. I actually made one huge mistake almost purely because I thought I was last to act on the flop, dropped 300 quid with TP, ended the day down 90. The Thursday game was surprisingly very very good, if the game ran like this every day there is certainly money to be made. Table was extremely nice and funny and talked a lot. A really nice Thai student to my left had very little clue how to play, there were two Italians both of whom played poorly when they were losing and still making mistakes even when they weren't, an African guy who was very nice and chatty couldn't play, an old British guy who was also quite talkative but straddled almost every opportunity called way too wide preflop and on the flop. Everyone else played solid but made a lot of mistakes from my perspective. I actually never was able to exploit the stations since I almost never flopped anything good, pretty won most of my money bluffing people out of 100 pound+ pots when the fish half gave away their hand strengths and really bluffable turn cards came and won KK vs JJ for a 300 quid pot (actually got into a huge cooler on the flop in one hand when I had KJo in a limped 6-way pot, flop came KKsJs and checked around to a 3 turn, river was a J. Original limper had AKo but I stupidly just called river, not sure if he would've folded to an all-in). Table was very deep (only two had <100BB, many had over 200, two had more than 1000 quid in front of them). Ended up 175, which IMO was pretty disappointing but left me pretty excited for the weekend. Also the rake is bitch, esp with the extra they take for the BBJ. From my experience, many of the players at the Empire are very friendly, esp in the Thursday game, which makes the games really fun so even if you barely beating the game makes it a bit more worthwhile. Even though I'm 19, I have a lot of experience playing live games in Korea (played over 200 hours this summer) and it definitely helps to talk with the table and act friendly instead of the broke ass Spanish dude in my Tuesday game buying in 50 quid a time wearing huge ass headphones, you actually do get a bit more action and people are less pissed about losing to you and therefore have less of an incentive to leave when they bust. Really pay attention to how the players play not to really exploit them (although you should) but because you can table select as soon as you enter the room, and also avoid people you see all the time playing 5+ hours. The reg infested Tuesday game is beatable but barely, Thursday game is definitely beatable for a decent amount, will update my weekend experience if people ask. Rake is **** but I'm planning to qualify for the cash race so wtv.
Just my opinion, only went twice (but I did play for over 15 hours already, which is 9 pounds in player rewards
), coming from someone who played in some of the loosest 5/5 games in Korea, need some connections to play them tho.
Has anyone every played at Palm Beach/Mayfair? How many recs are there at peak times (I don't mind if there are only 10 good hours to play there in the whole week, as long as there are recs)? How often do the games run and how many tables (from my experience, more tables just means regs are spread out)? I also read that a lot of regs were kicked out of the Palm Beach a couple months ago, has that made the games better? Also do the games get better later in the year or are they going to remain this reg infested? Not willing to play lower than 1/2, not trying to sound like a douche but -90 quid and +175 quid are break even sessions for me back home. Also do the less famous poker rooms in London have less or worse regs than the Empire (there is a Grovesnor really close to my school)? From what I read Hippodrome is even worse than the Empire. Might head out to the Mayfair this Saturday if I win a decent amount today and feel like gambling (according to Google from 9pm-3am is when it's busiest, not sure how accurate this is).
Honestly, before I came to London I thought there would be tons of investment bankers playing in 2/5 and 5/10 games with very low rake (rake in underground rooms in Korea are terrible) so this has been pretty disappointing so far (maybe Brexit has made everyone broke?). It would be really nice if the games get better or if the Mayfair is as soft as the Empire (better hourly with less rake). Only going to be in London for one year so it isn't a death sentence for my poker life if they don't, and maybe I'm a bit spoiled now can't play online anymore (used to play mtt's ABI 5$... made 3x more in my best cash session than my biggest MTT score (1.1k for the Sat Micro). Also money isn't really a problem in my situation, so I grinding for 10$ an hour to pay for tuition isn't really my thing.
