With a day off from work I decided to tootle on up for a "one-off" afternoon visit to Aspers for a little 1/1 before heading to my usual 1/2 game in Leicester Square... And OMG did I 100% regret that visit to Stratford - as I almost always do!

Sitting there for 2 or 3 hours with the large stack of around £150 and watching it gradually go up and down a few tens of quid before leaving £40 down is ridiculous. Apart from a few characters keeping the game jovial, it is the soulless, armpit of the world. If you love poker you must avoid at all costs.

The 80 minute journey from there to The Hippo in the car made me rue the day even more... but sure enough, the action at The Hippo made up for it completely and stamped home the feeling that I need NEVER EVER go to Aspers ever again!

That's it.

Asked about Bristol before, forgot to mention that usually I can only play 5-8 midweek so games are SHOCKING at Rainbow (anyone who plays there ITT, I'm the bloke who turns up in a suit who doesn't suck).

Are any of the other casinos any good around these times?

I recently was visiting London and played at the Hippodrome. Solid card room and casino, by the way.

In 1/2 NL, the button re-raised an early raiser to $25. When the action was on the big blind, a clear table fish, he announced raise and slid a stack of chips in. After crossing the line, a $100 chip fell off the top and he then placed it back on top of the other raising chips. The dealer immediately declared a string bet and would not allow the $100 to remain. The dealer ruled it a raise to $50. A few people protested, including me, but he quickly told me that "it's different than in America..." any truth to this?

As for how the hand played out, button called the raise to $50 with KK. Big button pushed all in on the flop of A-2-8 and showed A-5 off to take down a $300+ (GBP) pot

Sounds like a bad ruling, prob would have asked the floor for clarification on that one.

I'm playing the Megastack tournament at the hippodrome next week. I've never played there before.
Should I pre-reg a few days before/ do they even do that? How busy will registration be on the day?
Any other tips?

I'll be there too! I would prereg if possible, I nearly got shut out at the PSF event. I'll probably go to the cardroom a couple days before and register.

I don't know if you can pre-reg at Hippo, but in any event I'd 100% get there early doors.

It was insanely busy at the last event; they had to end up spreading additional tables on the first floor, and many of the individual tournaments were fully sold out, and some minor events like satellites even cancelled.

I imagine they'll be better preprared this time, but I can see the event being hugely busy because of the seemingly attractive structure. I'm not saying it is a good structure, but to the average MTT per season punter like myself it seems relatively attractive with deep stacks and the like for a relatively small BI - hence expect it to be rammed!

Hi all,

So I just moved from Australia to Croydon Uk for work and want to find a place to play some fun and cheap poker, I just play for fun when so I'm trying to find somewhere close and cheap.

The nights I have free to play will mostly be friday night, and all i can seem to find is medium priced Tourneys, I'd rather play a cheap buy in as i find the other players are more there for fun and then the money doesn't matter and i can drink and have a good time.

I've seen bigslick and Pollards but they seem to have £100 tourneys on fridays...I know for most players that isnt alot but if theres something cheaping id be more keen to blast off and take it less serious

Thanks for any help you can provide

Welcome to Croydon, I guess it's a bit like Australia that's if you change the sunshine for a damp drizzly grey climate and stunning blondes for orange skinned screaming banshees, enjoy😄

As for poker can't comment on the big slick as I have not played there for years, the mint is normally a very friendly place to play but has a £90 on Fridays, the Vic has a £40 on Fridays (this changes quite often for bigger tourneys at the weekend) but I'm not sure if I would use the Vic and friendly in the same sentance, that maybe a little unfair for the smaller tournaments. You have the Royal Surrey not to far but haven't been there for a long time.

Good luck, a little helpful tip for you if your in London late, the train runs from Victoria to Croydon on the hour from 1am til 5am.

So I was at The Vic last night and hear the list of names for a 1/3 game opening up. One name: Boris Becker, rings a bell so I look round after a few more minutes and sure enough - there is the man himself sitting at Table 27 ready to play 1/3!! Why would you miss the chance to play poker with a 3-times Wimbledon champ for a small buy-in? So I register for 1/3 and am happy to see my name near the top of the list... and soon enough I'm sitting there at the poker table with Boris Becker!

The guy played pretty tight and cautious all night and never stepped out of line or went crazy as you might expect for someone who was downing the beers and obviously insanely over-rolled for the stakes. I flopped a straight against him one hand and only managed to get one street of value on the flop when he folded to my £25 turn bet.

He was a true gentleman all the way through the 2-3 hour session and treated all players (and the money) with absolute respect. Shame that his exit hand was a cooler as he held 4 2 vs 4 A on an X 4 4 2 A board.

So not only can I say I played a little poker with the great Boris Becker, I even managed a small profit at the table before upping and leaving for The Hippodrome to continue my evening of poker.

Thanks for reading.

So, it's April 1, but you posted this after the midday cutoff... so should I be annoyed that I chose to stay home last night?

Haha what a great story. Played with Charlie from Busted/Fightstar ages ago, although that doesnt quite compare to Boris Becker! Played with a lord once as well at the Hippo, although i cant remember which one.

Played with Nicklas Bendtner and Nacho Monreal a few years ago. Bendtner was a great laugh (unsurprisingly)
