Hey guys

Can't seem to find a suited category for live poker rooms questions so will post here, since it's regarding live low-stakes nl.

Do anyone here knows if they have live pokerrooms in Lima, Peru - and if yes, can you give a review? Link? Whatever information you have.

Thanks

Poker in Lima
A Spanish site with schedules is perupoker.net

I have lived in Peru for almost 3 years now and play on a regular basis here. The only games that you will find are Texas Hold'em and almost exclusively NL. For most tourists passing through Lima and staying in Miraflores there are 3 casinoes. By law poker can only be played from 6pm to 6am. Most games start up between 7 and 8 pm.

At the Marriott Hotel is the Majestic Casino.
They regularly have a 2/5 sol game (2.83 soles to the dollar) with a 4% rake capped at 75 and 2 soles for the bonus jackpot. There is also a 10/20 dollar NL in the VIP room once or twice a week.

Atlantic City Casino on the corner of Larco and Benevides is one of the nicer ones in town with the most comfortable poker room that is upstairs from the main casino on the second level. Most nights they have tounaments and cash games start up about 8pm. Recently, the 5/5 dollar game has evaporated but there are usually 2 tables of 5/5 sol games with plenty of action. Common to see opening raises of 7-13x the BB with some callers or limped pots and everyone wants to play. No shortage of action. Check with the floor to see if any other games are being spread at higher levels.

Fiesta Casino

Located on Benevides and Alcanfores just a short walk from Atlantic City Casino. Most noted for low-buy in re-buy tournaments starting at 30 soles that start at 8:30 most nights. Satellites start at 6:30 pm and 1st to 3rd get entry plus a double re-buy/add-on with 4th gettting his buy-in. They allow smoking in the main poker room so be warned. Even though there is a law against it---we are in Lima (Rome) and laws are selectively enforced. My advice, grin and bear it or don't play here. There is a non-smoking section for the tournaments downstairs until enough eliminations occur and everyone is moved back to the poker room. A cash game breaks out after midnight with players leaving out of the tournament. It is very action oriented and is a 2/5 sole game.

Golden Palace in San Isidro on the Republica de Panama is a nice venue. They have some tournaments there and also spread Limit holdem in dollars.

New York Casino
Regular 2/5 sole NL game and a 10/20 sole game twice a week. Smoking permitted.

Miami Casino
Closest poker to the airport. Mostly tournaments with a late night cash game.

There are some strange rules to Peru that players from outside the area should be familiar with. One of them is to be sure not to bet out of turn as you will lose your turn and only be allowed to call. Any player can ask how much is in the pot. The pot is counted after each hand to take commission so there are lots of 25 and 100 sol chips on the table. Play is in Spanish but you can ask questions in English to the dealers if you are not sure.

Most casinoes will feed you or give you a taxi when you leave. Just ask the floor for details.

As a regular Lima rounder I'll add in my 2 cents. For tournaments Fiesta has the best structures. They have S/.350 ($110) freeze outs on friday nights with 10,000 starting chips and 30 minute levels with no antes. It is by far the best donkament in Lima. There are only 20-30 entrants since most Peruvians prefer the rebuy shoveaments and are afraid to play without their rebuy diaper. Monday is also a 1 rebuy -or- 1 add-on tournament that's not so bad. It has the same structure as Friday. Tue/Thu is the huge rebuyament that can be pretty fun if you don't have to be up early the next day. It has a younger crowd due to the low ($10) initial buy in so 4-way all-in on the first orbit is not uncommon. Cash games at Fiesta are only like 2 nights /week since they mostly run tournaments. Regarding smoking-- they no longer allow it at the table but rather near the stairwell. It's not so bad anymore and they plan on banning it completely some time this year when Lima's new smoking ban takes effect.

Atlantic City has one of the most LOL blind structures you'll every see in a live donkament. First of all they skip levels like 75/150 and usually start you at 50/100 and jump right to 100/200. They usually start you with 3000 chips and sometimes let you buy an extra 1000 for a nominal cost. The levels are 20 minutes but ramp up to 15 minute levels + antes by like level 5. AC donkaments are HUGE variance and you must be willing to rebuy multiple times. AC has the best room in terms of tables dealers at space. It's roomy, dealers are better and no smoking. Tables are nice and chairs are comfortable. Cash games are insanely soft.

Majestic is somewhere in between. They run various donkaments but their structure is somewhat better than AC. They have very soft cash games almost every night but the room is not a room, it's a section in the back of the casino. It's loud and chaotic with the idiot manager anouncing tournaments on a loud PA system half the night. The caveat is Majestic is located in a night spot and tourist area so the combination of drunk locals and tourists makes it ideal for playing against terrible fish.

Most players are well educated and speak English. You can use English for call, raise, check, fold if you wish. You'll be understood. If you want to do a 1-chip raise, just say raise and declare the amount in clear English if you don't' know any Spanish. People do it all the time. I speak fluent Spanish but many times act like I don't. I prefer people think I'm a tourist.

Without sounding too insulting most players here are horrendous. If it weren't for the low volume and high rake (5% uncapped) and low stakes I'd consider giving it a go as my income.

Aside from that, Aug. 25 the Poker Hispano Tour will be at Fiesta with a few nice tournaments. The main event being a $1,500 multi day tourney. http://www.torneopht.com/torneos/index.php

Also, if I may pimp my non-profit (no one every clicks my banners) blog I started you can find updated info. I try to update as much as possible. http://www.allinperu.com I never plan to make any money of this site.. it's more for my amusement.

Hope that helps the maybe five 2+2ers in Lima

@ Cherokee_66 and @ Cleveland Cutter

I live in Canada right now and make some money online. I traveled to Peru for 2 months about 18 months ago and enjoyed it a lot. I spent most of my time in the Cuzco and Arequipa peripheries, but liked what I saw of Lima. It sounds like the live action in Lima is pretty good. I'm looking to get away from Canada from January-April or so.

1. How easy is to play online poker in Lima? If I rent an (cheaper) apartment is getting an internet connection feasible? What about Internet Cafe's? I didn't see many in other parts of the country that could accommodate a laptop though I didn't travel with one. Are there any site restrictions etc?

2. Would you recommend playing live as a way to supplement my online income if I do live in Lima for 4 months? ie, is it potentially profitable for a small stakes grinder

thanks in advance

I have been living here for 4.5 years so I really have no idea on hotel based internet since I have not stayed in a Lima hotel in that time. However, as slow and as horrible the company that has a virtual monopoly on the internet (Telefonica) is, sometimes it's slow but it is VERY reliable. It virtually never goes down. I work as a systems engineer from home and my internet is more reliable that I had in the US..just slower which does not matter for online poker. Anyway, I can't speak to hotels' internet. I can tell you that nearly every cafe in Miraflores district (most likely where you'll stay) have free wireless.

Yes it can and is being done. It depends on how you want to live. I live in a very exclusive district in an expensive apartment and am a spender not a saver. So I rely on my US based income to pay my bills and play poker for fun. I play like a nit at the cash games and turn a good profit. Games don't start 'till after 8pm and run until 5-6am so you'll need to be a night person. Majestic and Atlantic are your best bets.

Something I forgot to mention in my last post, right now Tues/Thurs nights at Majestic (The Marriott) they are running $10/$20US NL cash game. 1 table. I have not played it but it's going. Lima poker is fluid and changes frequently.

PM me before you arrive and I'd be glad to introduce you to the Miraflores casinos and grab a drink. I am always up for speaking English!

Cherokee_66 and Clever Cutter thanks for great posts!

Have been living in Lima a month now and been pretty busy with setting myself up so haven't got the time for casino yet. The nightlife is killing me!
Send me your number in a PM and we can hook up for a drink - live just a few blocks from parque kennedy.

and btw. clever, keep up the good work with your blog!

Slight bump for this one.

I'm in Lima for a week or two and wanted to check out the cash games. Is all the info in this topic up to date or has anything significant changed?

Is there some sort of dress code at the casinos or are gringos in shorts and slippers allowed?

I guess I can update on Atlantic City.

Last night there was a 5/5 soles game going when I came in at 1030PM. The game was insanely soft with a bunch of bad locals, one nitty local and a decent American. Around 1AM a couple of old dudes left and 3 bad lags joined and the game instantly started playing way bigger with all of the three guys straddling each hand and one of them regularly throwing out 10bb raises pre for no reason and pulling off insane bluffs.

When I left at 3AM the game got 7 or 8 handed without any signs of breaking.

Fast dealers, nice chairs, no smoking in the poker room(but in a hallway close to the room), free drinks and snacks(nuts, fruit, sandwiches), and no dress code at all. I guess the dress code in casinos is a European thing.

I'm not really sure about tipping. Most of the locals only tipped in the really big pots and the two Americans and I tipped most of the time when we won a pot. For some reason noone seemed to tip the hot waitress.

Even with the high rake this game seems to be beatable for a reasonable amount of money, especially if you join the locals in the practice of hardly ever tipping.

Anybody has information about Rake?

I´m in Lima right now, but i don´t want to play high stakes with 5% uncapped.

I´m searching for 3/6$ and above with capped rake or small percentage.

Hi, I was thinking of planning a trip to Lima, however I can't seem to get any definite information about what the rake of the cash games spread the in the casinos is.

In this thread 4% capped at 75 sols is mentioned : http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/27...a-peru-800787/ .

And I have also heard people saying the rake is 5% uncapped.

Does anyone know for sure what the rake is in any of the cash games available in lima?

Thanks

Phil

Hi, I'm Mike and I'm 30.

I will be attending the LAPT Lima and may end up staying there for about six months.

Weighing costs/ability to play online and it just seems to make sense.

A couple questions for those in Lima if that's okay......

1. I speak no Spanish but have some French, I'm somewhat intelligent but have always had a problem with retention......

is it true that this dialect of Spanish is the easiest to say 'pick up'.....

and did anyone move there cold without any spanish and what were their experiences with that.....

how long immersed in the culture until their language skills were somewhat passable I guess is what I'm asking if they did move there with no Spanish....

2. My budget is about 800 a month for rent......would i be able to find an all inclusive studio type deal near the Atlantic City Casino with that (three or four block radius) or would I have to go more to the southern side? I'd like to be in Miraflores for sure centralized right by the AC

With a 1000 rent budget could that pretty much give me my pick of the area?

Is my best bet to book a hotel for a week and then look around once I get there....I'm looking at some corporate rentals and they start at about 1300 but that seems way to high from what I've been reading?

Are there any realtors one of you could recommend to find a place?

3. Are there particular places where Americans congregate? A bar or something of the sorts.

And also is the group of American poker players down there tight knit (as in know each others names and maybe a passing hello) or is it everyone for themselves down there

4. Rough guesstimate....how many American card players would you say frequent the casinos down there (frequent being once a week)

5. And most importanlty......Are the drinks free when you play?????!!!!!

Thanks and I will be looking forward to your replies!

I'm pretty sure you are allowed 6 months on a tourist visa in Peru. I was two years ago, anyway.

Maximum visa stay is 183 days, you can request that at customs when you enter, but it's up to them if they give it to you. Otherwise yea, you will have to do a border run.

Here's a good site which will answer a lot of questions you may have

I did. If you are cool with not being able to communicate its cool. I put very little work in (too busy actually working) and got by. You can get going in 2 weeks if you crash course or it might take 2 months if you are passive.

Yeah just don't pay 1000/mo for a 6 month place. That would be my recommendation. If you pay 800/mo for 6 months you should be able to find all you need. Start looking now. There are online sites available. Get in touch with the owners, negotiate prices. I know a realtor but not one I could recommend. Playing full time in AC is problematic for rake and they don't always spread 4/8, so 2/4 is your bread and butter game there. In terms of a week rental you can get a hotel room for 350$/week and it will be a very nice centrally located one. There are much cheaper places as well. There are too many streets for me to make a quick recommendation but 28 de Julio is not that far and neither is top of La Paz, or bottom of Larco, fwiw. All those will still be plenty central to AC.

3. Are there particular places where Americans congregate? A bar or something of the sorts.

There aren't that many expat poker players there. The ones that are there are rarely professionals. The Corner is a bar bottom of Larco to see any American sports, and by extension meet Americans. There is a good Irish bar on Berlin now and of course, Pizza Street. Meeting gringos is not going to be your challenge. Meeting Peruvians will be.

4. Rough guesstimate....how many American card players would you say frequent the casinos down there (frequent being once a week)

Not sure. Depends how you define frequent, American, and player. Bunch of whales with Miami properties are regs there. Some Americans on business. If you are worried about sharks showing up, then that's a non issue. If you only want to meet Americans, also non issue.

5. And most importanlty......Are the drinks free when you play?????!!!!!

Yes. Dinner is free at Majestic as well and its good. The Lomo Saltado is good there especially imo. Fiesta also serves dinner at nightly tournament breaks and its good Peruvian fare as well.
In the other thread there is a guy saying Lima/Miraflores is terrible, internet sucks, etc. Don't listen to that guy, sounds like he has no concept.

In terms of visa stuff I overstayed my 90 day by 245 days. You pay 1$/day for overstays, no further penalty after that. When you get in it is up to the kindness of the border entrance guy to give you 183 or 90. Have gotten both on different occasions, you just have to make a good impression with him/her. When I overstayed and paid the fine I re-entered the country twice subsequently with the same passport that showed I violated the visa last time, and got 183 on one of those times. They really don't care. Just mind your ps and qs anytime crossing. So really the calculus is, if you get in and want to stay 6 months, and get the 90, will it be worth it for you to go hop the border for 90$? After cabs/flights and the time it takes, probably not. Just have the 90-100$ in USD ready for the guy when you leave.

Also, I've written a bit about poker Peru, but don't think I can plug with a link here. So I'll just say that.

Yeah some of the other points in the other thread. Miraflores has much higher cost of living than just outside Miraflores. The food is amazing though, so is everything else. Good advice from cdubbz in that thread. Also bolivar on realtors is dead on. Whatever price they are asking for for rental, start negotiating at 40% of that. Drinks are free so Soah's wrong there but looks like they got everything else right.

Well me to- arriving there this Thursday. My past experience is a good weekend night the highest stake game is 2/5 at Atlantic City. I hope that hasnt changed. Last time I played there I felt it was a bunch of regulars with collusion. When I went to the toilet returning the floor manager was siting at my seat chatting to a guy and playing with my chips. He apologized and I counted one $5 chip short. You have to be careful in Lima.
