Will be there in a couple weeks and am wondering about the tourneys at Harrah's vs Ameristar. Looks like Ameristar has 2 on the each weekend day which are rebuys. Harrah's didn't give much info on theirs other than the buy in amount. Just curious about the style/structure, etc.

I read something in an older thread that Harrah's used to offer a poker room rate for their hotel rooms. Does anyone know if this is still the case & if so, what are the details? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure Harrah's has a 1 PM $30 buy in Mon-Fri, 7PM $50 buy in Mon-Thur. Ameristar just recently changed their night tourneys to Tues-Thurs $85buy in. I believe the day tournaments are $30 with a $10 rebuy and start at 11 AM.

Thanks for the info. I saw that one of the casinos caps the entries at 40. Do you know how early you have to show up to make sure you get a seat?

Harrahs caps their day tournament at 60 and night at 40. They usually sell out so I'd get there at least half an hour early. Ameristar didn't usually sell out before their changes but I'm not sure how they do now. I would still get there 30 min early just to be safe.

Sorry if I missed this, but do any of the KC casinos spread limited hold'em games higher than 3/6?

Headed there in two weeks, looking to play 10/20 FL or higher.

Any advice on hotel rooms near the casinos?

harrah's has a 20/40 that runs pretty regular. But there isn't much between 3/6 and 20/40. not sure about ameristar, they might have 4/8 or 5/10 but I doubt it, you should probably call their room to make sure.

Thanks. Know of any decent hotels within a cheap cab ride of the casino?

not sure about that but there are hotels at both Harrah;s and Ameristar but not sure on the cost for them. There are some in North Kansas City, that are pretty close to both of them. Just google hotels in North KC and they'll come up.

I can recommend that you don't trust a friend of a friend that says he'll pay you back for the cab when you go at 4am and he needs to swing by his apartment to "grab some cash" while you wait with the cab outside his house.

Thanks again, crow. Looks like I'll prob book a couple nights at Harrah's. Just was curious whether there was anyplace cheaper nearby that would be worth checking out, since I'll only be sleeping in the room.

Can't wait to check out KC. I've heard some great things about it, like "Paris of the Plains," and "more fountains than any city outside of Rome."

Sounds exactly like my kind of city.

Any tips on must-see, and perhaps not-well-known, spots would be greatly appreciated.

Heading there this week and next.

Are there any poker rooms offering a good Omaha H/L game? If so, what limits?

Thanks.

Went to Harrah's Casino. The poker room was much smaller than I expected. There were 15 tables and about 8 going. I sat down at 3-6 for about 15 minutes until the $50 (40+10) tournament started at 7pm (this was a Tuesday).

I started slow in the tournament, getting a feel for everyone else. I made some good moves and watched as people around me dropped like flies. At the break (4 levels of 20 minutes), there were 9 players left of the 30 that started (full capacity). Quickest tournament I've ever been in. I was sitting fairly well with myself and 3 others dominating and 5 people ready to go out.

From there, the five dropped one-by-one and we got down to the money. $120 for fourth, $200 something for 3rd, $300 something for 2nd and $540 for 1st. Someone offered a chop and I was the only one to decline $300. I am an idiot.

We exchanged blows until I was down to about 10k and the average was likely 22 or 23k. I look down at KK in the small blind. Fold around to me, I raise to 3k. Guy in BB postures and calls. Flop is 235 rainbow. I go all-in and try to talk the guy out of calling and he pushes; turns over A3. The turn is an Ace and I walk away with $120 unhappily.

I immediately get a seat in $1-2 NL and play a few hands. Mid-position I look down at 77 with a very loose table. I limp in and have the small blind raise to $7. Big blind calls and I also call. Flop is AQ7 rainbow. Small blind bets $25 and Big blind makes it $50. I think for awhile and put one on AQ and the other on AK or AJ. I push all in for $110 and Small blind folds. Big blind calls immediately with AQ. The turn is a queen and I pack my things and go. I just can't bare to stay and play anymore.

Overall, the experience was ok. There were plenty of drinks being offered by hot waitresses (with the exception of one really old woman) and the floor person was alright. Being a non-smoking area didn't really matter since people smoked right outside of the room. Having to register for a player's card to get in the tournament was a nuisance and took too long. No signs or anything that would tell you where anything is. Nothing but hold em being played. A 5-10 NL game started up but mostly $1-2NL and $3-6L.

Anybody play lot of live cash games in KC? I usually go to Harrahs and play 1/2 or 2/5. I guess they shut down Argosy, Isle of Capri. I've only been to Ameristar twice to play, but it seems like Harrahs is more juicy.

Does anybody know of any other casinos or cash games in the area down south in Kansas? I get sick of driving 40 minutes to win $10 an hour for six hours when it costs me $10 to get there.

The very southeastern corner of the State, DownStream Casino, right where KS MO and OK meet. You realize that you are talking about the State that didn't allow you to buy hard liquor by the drink in a bar until the 80s and half the counties were still dry. If you are 40 minutes from KC then this is probably twice the distance the other way.

Know any underground games playing at least .5/1 NL in the KS Kansas City suburbs?

Did anyone play in the 100/200 NL game at Harrah's over the weekend? Just interested in any thoughts about the game, the room, and any big hands that were played.

I just moved back to the KC area, and am looking at going with some buddies to play a tourney next Thurs...options are Harrah's for $50 (looks from this thread like 40+10 - yikes that's a lot of rake) with a max of 40 players, or Ameristar's $85 (don't know the buy-in/rake breakdown) that doesn't list a max. Any advice on the better option (softness of game, structure, etc.)? Thanks guys!

Naw, I was there and I could see the chips. Dealer said some dude lost 100K, and there was a 63K hand. Brandon Steven was there. I was told he got 10th in the Main Event this year.

I'll be going back tomorrow night donking away chips like I did last weekend

Harrahs has 3-6 limit and 20-40 on the weekend. 1-2, 2-5, 5-10, and 10-20 NL. run as well. The bad beat there is low. Its been hit several times recently.

The Ameristar has mostly 3-6 and 1-2. 2-5 will run Friday nights and every once in a while Saturdays and durring the week but def on Friday. Their bad beat is around 210k.

Also Ameristar has 75% buy in on there 1-2 games so they play bigger than normal.

Hope that helps.
