Was in town this week and Hollywood is the only option if you are looking to play above 1/2 nl cash. Their 1/3 game is one of the best I've played in with some of the worst players imaginable. They also had a great 2/5 where you can buy up to the big stack and a great 5/10 game while I was there. They also have a good mixed game.

If you make it out and play the 1/3 look for a bald old guy named Bill. If he's at the table count your blessings. Was in the game for $2k and you can only buy in for $300 max. He talks constantly so you will be able to spot him

There was also an African American gentleman who is a reg that plays any 2. I'm not kidding when I tell you he literally will play every hand no matter the preflop action. He apparently owns several car lots and just loves to splash around. He is another talker and loves to scream when he wins a pot.

In other words pack up your Uhaul and get there quickly.

Come to KC for the BBQ, not for poker..

Harrah's is a nice little place with very friendly staff, but they only offer a 1/2 that plays pretty small. Friday night is supposed to be bigger there, but I haven't been yet.

Hollywood has 2/5 but somehow I can't get warm with that place and it's also not really close if you live in the south/east of KCMO.

Agree on the BBQ. Had lunch at Johnny's while I was in town. Good stuff!

Hollywood is the most consistent cash game traffic, and the nicest room of the three imo. I think all three have pretty decent tournies and are comparable as far as number of runners. Doc can confirm this better than I can, as I don't make it over to harrahs and ameristar unless there is a special tournament or series going.

As the A&M gentleman mentioned, the 1/3 game at Hollywood is a great low stakes game that is super loose passive, and has a large player pool. Friday and Saturday you can expect to see between 4-7 tables of this game going, a 2/4 limit table, 1-2 tables of 2/5NL (must move), 1-2 tables of 5/5 PLO (must move), and 5/10NL has been going the last few Friday's.

Hollywood is $0.75 for comps if someone didn't throw that in here yet.

Between the two, Ameristar seems to draw the larger fields while Harrahs tournaments run more consistently.

Thanks to everyone so far for the replies; it's very much appreciated.

I'm not moving to KC for the BBQ or the poker, but those are very nice benefits to the area

Ameristar has a $175 buy-in tournament tomorrow starting at noon. 20,000 in starting chips and everyone has a $50 bounty on their head.

Disappointing turnout. According to the board, we only had twenty-three entrants, but as it was a reentry event, I don't know how many unique players we had. I know two players at my table reentered.

I took out one player and finished 10th.

Harrahs has a freeroll promotion tourney with a $10,000 prize pool. You can qualify through playing cash games or tournaments.

Are there days that are better than others for PLO (or LHE if there is anything 20/40+)?
Coming in for the football game and still debating between a Friday or Saturday flight.

Thanks

I would come down Friday if those are the games you want. Hollywood has a loose 20/40 game that starts around noon on Friday and goes on into the evening. Usually two 5/5 PLO (one being a must move) going by like 7-8pm it seems like. 5/10NL has been running every Friday as well. Saturday's are very hit and miss with all the bigger games.

Flying out tomorrow late morning.
Near bbq near casino?

Best BBQ near hollywood (or anywhere for that matter) would be Joe's KC (formerly Oklahoma Joe's). Get the ribs. A full rack. You won't be disappointed.

The original location in a gas station is worth venturing to, but be prepared to wait 30-60 min depending on time of day. Maybe longer. Its at 47th & Mission in KCK. The next closest locale would be the Leawood KS spot, at something like 119th & Roe Ave.

There is a Famous Dave's across the street from Cabela's. I found it underwhelming, but it is bbq near the casino.

Harrahs' freeroll promotion has ramped up room traffic.

Between 3 - 5 PM Mon-Fri there's usually only around 15 minutes waiting time from my limited (~10 times) experience.

I'd recommend one of the dinner platters that has ribs and brisket or pulled pork.

Is the 5/10 game at Hollywood going every Friday now?

Yeah, 5/10NL has been going every Friday at Hollywood for the past 5-6 weeks. One of the guys has been calling in a list on Friday morning and last week there were enough players to start a must-move feeder. Start time is typically between 4-6pm.

Closest OK Joes to Hollywood is probably I-35 and 119th St. in that big Olathe shopping center.

For those wondering about the state of tournament poker on the Missouri side of the metro area, Ameristar is only offering tournaments on five days of the week with Tuesdays and Thursdays being the days left out. Harrahs continues to offer tournaments seven days a week.

Last edited by Doc T River; 11-04-2015 at 03:34 PM. Reason: There are no Friday night tournaments at either, but both offer Friday day tournaments.
