Out of towner thinking of playing a tourney at either Harrahs or Ameristar on Saturday. Both 10,000 starting. Harrahs is $120 and Ameristar is $65. After would like to play some 1/2 cash, but doesn't have to be at the same place. Which would you recommend for each?

Thanks!

I'd recommend Harrahs over Ameristar for both. However, if you are looking for a cash game afterwards, and don't mind driving from one casino to the next, I'd recommend the Hollywood Casino for cash games. It's about 25 minutes from Harrahs.

The last time I showed up for the Saturday $120 at Harrahs there were only 17 runners and it was paying only the winner. This was after start time (they do allow late entry). Mostly 50+ crowd.
However at Ameristar, if you have not registered by 10am for that noon tourney, you are going to probably be on the standby list. Register then go get breakfast.
A lot more younger guys than Harrahs but over half 50+. Ameristar has the superior ventilation system, if you are a non-smoker.

Harrahs has just fallen off the map since Hollywood opened a couple years ago. Cash tables used to fill out ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT, now they are doing well to have four going on Saturday night. Ameristar has the highest bad beat payouts, if that interests you at all.

Also the vig for Harrahs tourney is the highest in town as they take out extra to apply to a quarterly freeroll for the highest point earning regs.

Hope this helps without making a direct recommendation.

I'm going to be in Wichita for a business trip and I was thinking of taking some weekend trips to Kansas City. From what I'm reading the best place for cash games seems to be Hollywood? Is Harrah's worth going to, or should I just stick to Hollywood since all I'm playing is poker?

I'm also thinking of another weekend trip to Oklahoma City, so recommendations for casinos there, if anyone has any experience, would be greatly appreciated.

It is curious to me the recommendations for Harrah's.
Now don't get me wrong, Harrah's USED TO BE my favorite spot for poker. It would pack out even on Wednesday night. The play was soft, the tournaments easy to negotiate, decent people, good dealers - great place minus the lack of ventilation.

Then Hollywood opened. There was a mass exodus. Most of the best dealers from Harrah's now work at Hollywood - leaving those that don't pay attention to the game and make stupid mistakes (awarding pot to the loser of the hand). OVERWHEMINGLY, Hollywood became the place for players to be. For cash that is - they were so packed out for so long they had no need to run any tournament action for quite a while. Even now they have the fewest number of tournaments per week (1.5) of all the places. Harrah's tournaments do not come close to selling out while Hollywood and Ameristar have waiting lists. Imagine my shock when I arrived to the 100 man Sunday tourney ten minutes after shuffle up and deal and I would have been only the 17th entry. Couldn't even fill two tables. So sad considering I used to have to get there an hour ahead to insure getting in.

As I write this (10 am) Hollywood has two cash tables going with waiting list, Harrah's has ZERO (six waiting).

Harrah's poker room has fallen on hard times. I'm not happy or pleased about it, but it is the way things are. About the only thing it has going for it is the chance to qualify for the Main Event now and then (supposed to be monthly but it doesn't always have enough players to make it happen).

Now how can you recommend Harrah's to those seeking a place to play? Are you trying to stimulate Harrah's poker room by being less than forthright? I know there are a handful of loyalists still playing there (and I miss you) but the fact is the action has moved away and now resides at Hollywood and Ameristar.

If you you are looking to avoid the crowds and the action - Harrah's is definitely on the top of the list.

Sorry Harrah's - I miss you, but you aren't what you used to be.

Good to read this thread as I will probably have time to play a tournament this Saturday. Looks like I'll be heading to Ameristar.

What is funny though is Event #8 is the same buy-in, the same starting chip stack, and the same blind time but it is said to be a one day event.

I guess I'll find out the reason for the discrepancy when the series comes to town. If Event #1 is two days, I don't have the time so I guess I will play Event #8. Even if Event #8 is two days, I will have the time.
See the schedule here for other questions.

Event 1 is a two day event, event 8 is a Survivor tournament so it will end when 14% of the field is remaining and the top 14% will receive $900 in cash.

Most weeks, the answer is Hollywood casino about 20 mins west of KC. This week only, it is likely Ameristar as HPT is there with main event this weekend.

Didn't get to play the HPT event here but I consoled myself with the idea I would get to play the Big Slick charity poker tournament.

WRONG!

The poker tournament has been replaced by a bowling tournament.

I'll be coming to KC for a week soon. What rooms offer $2/$5 NL & PLO games or better? I hear Hollywood is regularly the best, but are there specific nights where the action at the others is good?

Thanks

Pretty much Hollywood every day. Normally 2/5NL and 5/5 PLO. Wednesday evenings there is usually 10/25 NL.

Played Hollywood for the first time today, 1/3 NLHE. I'm used to Harrah's daytime game, which is a bit more... calm.

Holy crap.

The game played like PLO. Preflop raise to $25? 4 to 6 callers. Every time.

People calling down to the River with just mid-pair.

Wow.

Played Hollywood last Thursday night. 12 table room, 6 tables were going. Played 1-3 NL. Game was a bit tough for a live game (not that many fish). Pots were opened for anywhere from 12-25. Game got tougher as the night wore on, the few fish present busted, and tables of good players merged. The PLO game looked lively, someone said there was a 12k pot.

Hows the local scene been lately? I've been out of the loop for a few months. I've got a few free days next week might get some action in. What time does the Monday morning Hollywood tourny usually fill up?

I am not certain, but I think they usually have spots open in the tournament even after it starts.

HPT coming back to Ameristar in March of 2015. My bar poker league has changed their championship to July so I will get to play something.

Last night, went to Harrahs to play slots for the first time since March and the place was dead. Stopped by the poker room to pick up current info on their poker tournaments and there was one table running. ONE!

They are planning on having a $250 buy-in tournament on the 3rd of January and I wonder if it will happen.

Was also at Ameristar last night and the floor was pretty dead but not as bad as at Harrahs. Didn't go by the poker room though.

Was really worried about the tournament going off on Saturday at Harrahs as they showed only one person had signed up when I called Thursday, but it ended up having ninety players and I ended up playing. Was eight away from cashing, but had fun.

Will be playing the regular Saturday tournament once a month starting this Saturday.

I'm truly amazed. That's good news. I went a couple months ago and they couldn't fill one table.
