There is a charity room at 13 and Gratiot called 4 Aces. It's in a bowling alley (can't remember the name). They have some seriously different tournament structures. Thursday night is a $1 rebuy, but you can rebuy in $1, $5, $10, $20 or $30 dollar amounts (with 2x chips if bought before the T starts or after the first break). $11 dollars starts you with 25k in chips, 80k for $31.

There is a tremendous amount of dead money in the game. I've seen people drop $90 worth of buy-ins the first hour. I usually buy in for $11 and add another $10 at the break if I'm not over fiftyk. Stack average is about 50k at the break with maybe 10% of the field gone.

It's kind of a rough looking crowd (imagine a charity card room at the Star Wars cantina "My friend doesn't like you.") but I've always been treated well there. It is a tremendously loud room -- lot's o' yellin' about that flop. Tear up parts of bar napkins and stuff them in my ear.

I haven't played in their cash game yet. It looks tempting, but doesn't start very early.

It's worth a look if you're up for something different. Plus, it makes the Big Beaver Tavern feel like the Bellagio.

Snookers in Utica has doubled their starting chip stacks to 10K in the $30. I like their deals better than most clubs.

There's usually two to three 1/2 NL Holdem.

The dealers are smart and care about the game. Jordan, wow.

Any cash games at 4 aces?

The cash games at 4 Aces are INCREDIBLY soft though as stated don't start until 9pm or so though the games at Snookers seem to have more dead money (affluent gentlemen taking the day off work to piss away a few hundred dollars, though heavily populated with italian and chaldean guys who again seemingly have more money) I play at Slapsticks from time to time though those games are drying up and a fast rate. But still the games at Sunnybrook seem to have the best action. They have a $1/2 rxr game that essentially morphs into straight Omaha high when the stacks get deep enough and everytime I go there's literally $4-5k on the table with four-way all-ins on the regular.

Are there any charity rooms besides 4 Aces on the east side near I94?

Wow what day does this run? Sounds like the game i've been dreaming of. I love PLO but Greektowns 5/10 is a too high for my bankroll. I haven't been out to Sunnybrook since i first moved out here 6 months back so I can't wait to check this out.

Anyone know which if any of these charity rooms runs $50-100+ buyin tourneys with a good turnout and prize pool or would Greektown (their monthlys or whatever) be my best bet for a tournament like this? The turnout at the Big Beaver tournament on Friday night was pretty good, I think about there were about 80-90 people but it was only $20 and most of them left after they busted and didn't play cash.

Snookers has a $100 tourney, usually 1st Sunday of each month. They get 120-150 players.
Every Friday is $45 and they get close to 100 players.
Good cash games afterward

At Greektown right now: 2 tables of 3/6, 3 tables of 1/2 nl, 4 tables of the 11 am tournament. 5/10 PLO is also running. BBJ is 28k.

At 11pm at MC on Saturday there were FOUR 2/5 nl games. They had 2 must moves and a main and then opened another must move around 10:30pm. There was also a 10/20nl, $500-$5000(which really wasn't good at all) and one 5/10nl which was only so so. The rest were $1/2nl. They had lists a mile long and didn't open the last 2 tables until probably 10-10:30 I'd guess so a lot of dealers must have called off, as usual

Mini TR: Greektown Saturday Game
After losing $145 the night before @ my closest charity room, I played two sessions at Greektown yesterday. Got there about 12:30 and had immediate seating at the $1/$2 table. Got seated with a short handed group with my usual 100bb buy-in. At first I thought it was going to be a repeat of the night before. I was so card dead, but unlike the night before the table was fairly aggressive with very few limped pots. Played one flop in the first hour with AT offsuit UTG+1, and got called in two spots behind me which had to be such a strong range since I was playing like a rock. Flop comes 9 high, I could tell the guy on my left wanted to bet, so I check folded. Both had Q9 offsuit and chopped the pot.

It did get better, I stayed patient reminded by my 2+2 reading that it doesn't matter how nitty you play, you will get paid when you enter a pot. While I waited for cards there was a commotion on table one of the tournament. Apparently a younger guy had been ahead on an all-in, got sucked out on, and a couple of regs started whooping and hollering and congratulating the winner like they really wanted to bust the younger guy, who immediately got up and walked out, but man, his face looked like he was both embarassed and like he was going to go postal. Just my opinion, no matter what a jerk someone is at the table, take the glee of him/her busting out with class. IMHO

Anyway, the guy that ended up busting the young guy was eliminated in 10th place, out of the money, came to our cash table, and after only three hands proceeded to get his chips all in with AK pre-flop against QQ and lost the flip.

I also won an all-in preflop and my kings held against AK. But the hand of the night was puzzling to me. Limped pot, I'm in the small blind. I had been limping in blind from the SB without announcing this and checking the flop. If a bet was made or it got checked to the turn, I would then look at my cards. Flop comes A A 8 two diamonds. Gets checked around in standard form, and I look down at A 7 offsuit. I bet $10 into a $14 pot when the Jack of clubs gets turned. I get two callers. River is the Jack of diamonds completing a possible flush. I bet $20 with the second nuts. Lady in seat 6, raises me to $60. Button folds and I tank for a minute before min raising to $120. She goes all-in and I feel like WTF, but call thinking now that I'm chopping. She turns over Jacks full of aces for the second best boat and the dealer starts to count my stack because she has me covered, and the lady goes a little bezerk berating the dealer saying, "just give me the chips, you don't have to count. I have a full house". After saying this twice, and failing to hear me say, I have a bigger full house, three other guys at the table had to explain to her why she lost (including who I presume to be her boyfriend/friend). This is why I love live poker!

Sorry, for the long report. Had one more interesting hand, but I will just summarize here by saying had a delicious prime rib at Bistro 555 on my comps, and came back to book another winning session after dinner. Otter and the other $2/$5 regs my bankroll is almost ready for MC!

Weekend afternoons. The best part of the game is that these kids look terrified with the amount of money at stake.

I went there (sunnybrook) last week and asked about it and the guy running it told me that it's 1/2, but the table basically enforces a $10 straddle (how does 1/2 plo have a straddle of $10, I don't know). It was late and I never had a chance of getting a seat since I was 10th on the list so after half an hour of talking I left.

The next day I got there early and it was more of the same. 75%-90% of the hands were straddled for usually $10 and occasionally $5 for 5 hours that I played. Seriously there were only a couple players at the table that didn't straddle at all and I'll be damned if they were going to "enforce" a straddle on me w/ my tiny $200 stack.

I don't mind playing a 5/10 plo at all even w/ an occasional $20 straddle (which is what the Greektown game is), but being restricted to a $200 buyin w/ the way the game is played makes it a crap shoot. The buyin is totally out of line w/ the game and it becomes a preflop shove-fest.

The dealers aren't bad, but they were all really slow in figuring out the pot so you didn't get in a lot of hands

I just looked at the website for the first time: http://sunnybrookpoker.com/

It says $5 rake for all cash games. That's not true because I'm sure there were dealers raking $6. I'm 100% sure

Played a session at Snookers in Utica on Saturday. They had a tournament going and about 4 tables of 1/2 cash games. They also had a 2/5 table, not sure if they ever got a second one to go to feed into that one, but the stacks were huge in that game.

After the tournament ended they had a few stragglers stay for cash, but I was really surprised how the action started to fall and my table had to be broken. For a saturday night they were sure missing players.

As for my table, I started off with like three big hands in a row, QQ, AK, JJ and I think the table must have thought I was trying to run the over. I only managed to win two of those hands and it was downhill from there until dinner time when I managed to double up without a show down (thanks loose pre-flop callers and SPR). After dinner I came back to some bad luck when I flopped trip queens with a jack kicker only to have my opponent hit a boat with his Q3o on the river. I was $100 down and had to fight my way back on a roller coaster to about $75 down (it was messy).

At the new table I got dealt an incredible stream of hands in two hours: pocket aces twice, pocket kings twice, AK, JJ and pocket 5's that hit a set for a big pot. Not surprisingly I was due for a variance hit after a relatively good month, and all those hands lost big pots except for aces held once and JJ held. Lost twice with kings and my aces got cracked by A5 of hearts.

My hand with AK was crazy. Young kid raises to $20 UTG. Gets called by UTG+1 who is stuck and a little on tilt. He then gets called by crazy gambler dude (the guy that cracked my aces and kings). I look down at AKo on the button. I'm like 100bb deep at this point and so is the original raiser UTG, and I think I'm the only one at the table that recognizes what a strong range he is representing. There is $60 already in the pot, reraising in position seems to be the right move, but I'm sure that will make the young guy shove. Do I really want to flip this deep and possibly be crushed? Then I notice the SB stacking chips like he is going to shove, so I decide to just call to see what happens. Sure enough, older dude gambler that just won $1700 at Motor City earlier that day pushes all in with $125. BB now tanks and seems unsure what to do, but eventually decides to call! Then young kid also tanks, and I just know that there are few aces and kings in the deck and at least one person has a big pocket pair, although no one except SB older guy probably has AA or KK. UTG folds, but then stuck guy calls for less and so does crazy gambling dude. Three guys are all in and BB has me covered and is back to me. What else? I fold face up and the board comes out JT789 no flush. SB was really gambling with K5dd, BB has everyone covered and wins the huge pot with QQ with a straight. UTG+1 mucks and crazy gambling dude shows T9dd for two pair. Young guy UTG says he also had AK. Crazy pot. Winner offers to buy drinks and cheeseburgers for the table.

Ended the night when my KK lost to 23o, and I left $226 down. Crazy night.

I'm thinking about playing O8 live. Is that game still running at motor city on saturdays. Is it full of regs, or can you actually get in the game if you get there early enough?

I am considering playing at Detroit MotorCity for some LHE (as I am staying there anyways).

Does anyone have any experience playing there?

What LHE stakes run on a Friday evening?

What does 'Texas Hold’em $20-$40 Round by Round' mean?

Thanks for any assistance.

Quick Summary: MCC is the Busiest Detroit Poker Room. Probably best overall run Casino Poker Room in the D. Most "consistent" level of play. By this I mean, it has probably the highest number of experienced players and therefore lower variance and more "predictable". The Property is overall Very Good with a newer Hotel. You could comfortably spend a weekend there without having to leave the Property.

MGM and Greektown are a short drive from MCC - all Casinos are within about a 1 mile radius, but not a "walkable" mile. MGM is a great Property - most Vegas-Like property outside of Vegas that I've been to. Greektown is most worn Casino Property in Detroit, but relatively recently completely renovated the Poker Room and it is on par with other rooms in the D.

Caesars Windsor is just over the border - need a passport.

This is going to be a total shot in the dark, but I would appreciate the Detroit regulars reading:

About 3 years ago, I was on a carribean cruise ship, and played at the 1 poker table on the ship a couple of nights. Had no idea how to play, but starting talking to a young guy who told me he was a professional poker player. He's pretty much the reason I got myself into poker, and I just want to see if I can find the guy.

He told me he played in Detroit, playing the 75-150 games (15k BI). He also played in Arizona, although not sure how often. He was a heavy set guy, young (25 maybe), always wore a backwards cap. Had a younger brother on the cruise ship with him that he was teaching to play poker as well.

Any detroit regulars have an idea of who I'm talking about? I don't remember his name, for some reason the name Gary MIGHT ring a bell, but that could be a total guess.

There aren't any 75/150 games here unless you meant AZ. There is a youngish, heavy set kid that occasionally played downtown who won a circuit event. I don't know anyone named Gary though. He has dark hair and a goatee
