Doing nothing = they keep tailgating, i keep having someone with no reaction time behind me.
Tapping brakes quickly = they get a scare, either back off or change lanes, and i don't have someone with no reaction time behind me. I don't see how that's any contest.
I suppose the official driver's ed approach is just to slow down gradually, which i do as well (if they don't get the hint).

Step one of avoiding tailgating is to ask yourself "am I being tailgated because I am in a lane I shouldn't be?" I rarely (if ever) observe tailgating in travel lanes, and frequently see it when people are impeding passing lanes. Something to consider.

Perhaps you just arrived from Mars, or Denmark, or somewhere else where they drive much better than Detroit. This is the Detroit thread, so i was referring to local conditions, where they certainly tailgate you in the right lane, the left lane, the center lane, wherever. I don't stay in the left lane if i'm blocking people (except long enough to pass and get out of their way).
