In my opinion, PLO is/will be the next big boom.

Last edited by gambit8888; 01-09-2012 at 11:05 PM. Reason: will become more popular than holdem at some point

I've been telling them for over a year to spread a low limit round by round. I guess enough others have too

Re: Detroit

I wish they would skip the round by round and just spread 1/2 PLO. But this is a step in the right direction

Yeah, exactly. Maybe it will lure someone sitting to play NLHE like they do on TV, but who wouldn't play straight PLO. I'd love to get the foundation for some more frequent PLO action, especially downtown casino action.

=====

2. Does the Thursday night mixed game somewhere in the NW suburbs still go? That was fun the one time i played it.

=====

3. We got burned badly several months back by trying too much too soon with a mixed game (and by getting fooled by a farce of a poker room on Lafayette Avenue). Nevertheless, i think there's some potential for us to team up and get some non-NLHE going. But we all have different interests, so i suggest compromising to build up games. First we agree to meet several weeks in a row to start whatever game is most popular (say, PLO). After a couple of months, when that's either going or not, we do the same with the next most popular choice (say, 6/12 or 8/16 LHE). And so on.

Now, what sucks is that some of us will need to tread water against other competent players in a game that might not be our best while waiting for weaker players to show up. E.g., i'm not a good PLO player, even though i'm eager to learn. So i would give up EV to the PLO sharks to get their game going. Hopefully i'd make it back later on in getting more games going that i like. Maybe not. In any case, i'm adaptable and learn so i could learn to beat a juicy PLO game if we got that going.

Basically, it's a compromise to build up some enthusiasm for other games. Thoughts?

Re: Detroit

**** it, I suck at PLO but ill give plo action (1/2) with a 200 or so cap if we are playing 6/12 or 8/16 or something... I would hope not in the NW suburb. Im fat and dont want to move very far. In the end if the game is in sterling heights, the game would have to run more than 3 hours to make it worthwhile for me to come out.

2. I have no idea

3. I like this idea. I know O8 , AtariRob, and Sevup both like playing other games also. We have spread PLO8 pretty successfully at Cadas recently. That in itself proves that there is enough interest in other non holdem games. I would like to see Stud8 get spread there (even at a small stake like 5-10 to start with).

---I am leaning towards thinking a mixed game to start with would be the best. Let the players decide what games they want included. (example: game starts at 6 pm... the first people that show up and get the game going name the games they want. As other people join the table, dicuss other ideas.) I have seen this kinda democracy work before and I think it could work for us.

--- I like this idea and would like to see it come to life. The 2 variables that I think would make or break it is TIME and PLACE. If we can solve those issues, I think we can get this thing going.

Thoughts??

People have been saying this for a couple of years, but then can't even sustain a regular game much less multiple tables at multiple locations.

If you were to draw a 25 mile radius circle that encompassed the SE Michigan "Charity" rooms, Big 3, and Windsor, on a slow night you'd have perhaps 30 active tables of Hold'em and maybe 1 of some sort of mixed game or Omaha. At a peak hour you might have 70 tables of Hold'em and maybe 4 Mixed/Omaha. Long way to go for Omaha to be more popular than H'em

I personally don't care for Omaha and don't really understand the passion some players exhibit for the Game.

The problem with PLO is that the four cards makes it mathematically and intuitively correct to get stacks in on certain boards. People don't really know what they're doing when they say "pot", and any bet less than pot seems weak to people, so you end up with a hyper aggressive, stack shoving game. You can't nurse a stack for a long time with PLO without risking it because most legitimate hands have so much equity and when people shove you'd be losing so much value by folding.

As opposed to Holdem where people can nit it up and play tight for hours on 100bb and never get put to the test for their whole stack. Thus, recreational players like Holdem and gamblers and bored Holdem players like Omaha.

That's why I prefer PLO8. People can get their stack in for at least half or quarter of the pot and not go broke.

Which means it is still a great time to go down there. Alot of people who think they are smarter then the average Joe who makes alot of money will be going down to the Casinos. Alot of people who travel and work down there will be going to the Casinos as well.

Wish i had a bankroll.

Re: Detroit

the learning curve is much steeper in PLO. noobs get ultrafleeced way easier and quicker and harder than in nlhe, and edges between very good players are thin.

Re: Detroit

PLO, is a gambling game!! Very seldom are people drawing dead in PLO, but when they are its usually holding a straight and the other better player gets it in with the same hand, and a set or a flush draw or flush/straight redraws. Thats the only/best way to get money while playing deep.
