Most rooms charge in some way or another (by scale or %) around 5%.

Did you find your game?

On another note, did anyone play in the pura vida tournament? Would like to get back into it, been gone for a couple weeks and will only be back for a bit before I travel again.

Bump.

Im probably going to costa rica for 2 months october - december. I want to be able to surf daily and hit the casino at nights, which region/which casino/beaches should I go to? Also, are there any nice (deep?) tournaments out here during these months?

And something offtopic; If im travelling abroad from Holland to Costa rica will I be able to use and cash out with the pokerstars client?

Thanks in advance,

If I would admit to ever being there I would "imagine" it's a pretty good game. I can't say for sure what the rake is because of all the distractions, uhh alleged distractions, if I was there.

I made my living playing the Del Rey cash game for quite a while. Thurs-Sun are wild action days, as a lot of guys blow in for the weekend, get hammered, and then hammer chicks.

Not too many real players, but during the week lot of regs, game starts about 5pm usually. Also a way tighter local game across the street in the Horseshoe.

Bigger games are mainly at the Fiesta by the airport.

Wound up playing for a couple of hours in a little town in the North West corner of the country. Not far from Liberia. $20 max buy-in. 1/1 NL. (Yeah, I know). Lost two quick buy-ins by getting revered by the same guy on three hands. As one guy started accumulating most of the chips, the table began to break. Finally the guy with the chips took off and I was left playing head's up with a local "working girl".

He he, "head's up" with a working girl.

Grinded out a $2 profit for the night.

He he, "grinding" with a working girl.

Back down in San Jose I stuck my head in at the Del Ray (wow!) poker room and didn't see much early poker action. Another working girl told me that the Horseshoe was a better poker room. Didn't have any time to do more recognizance than that.

He he, "sticking my head in" at the Del Ray.

Heading down to Costa Rica in early February. Any idea how the live Poker action is in San Jose or Jaco? How about the Hotel Del Rey or Fiesta? Any one know anything about stakes or action in these games or others. I will be traveling outside of San Jose as well so any info on any other games would be appreciated.

I played at Horseshoe last month. It's a 1/2 game with pretty good action. I think they said they try to get started around 2ish. There were 2 tables going every time I was there. There's supposedly a game at Del Rey, but every time I stuck my head in the poker room there was nothing going on. Horseshoe is right across the street from the Del Rey.

The rake gets a little steep in bigger pots. The guy running the game tried to justify it by telling me how small the rake is on the smaller pots, lol. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it's posted inside the door of the locker where they keep the chips.

Probably good ol' Dr. Bob (old white guy, balding, usually with a cigar in hand). They rake the hell outta that game. Del Rey can be good action on Thurs/Fri/Sat nights when most guys are in town, although they rarely get a 2/5 going.

Thanks for the info guys. I will be reporting back on what I find. I also found that there are games at the San Jose Palacio Hotel and the Irazu Hotel and Casino. Anyone ever play in those locations?

Most casinos in Latin America is 5% like online poker. Usually no max... So at 1/2 it gets Meagan step. $10-20 out of a pot happens too often and then many people buying in for $40 lol.

I'm currently playing as many poker rooms as I find in Costa Rica from Coco Beach in Guanacaste. I have created a map of the different establishments confirmed and/or rumoured to play live poker at www.exopoker.com/costarica to share with other vacationing players. Deal!

Cool. How's the action these days? I played in Coco in the Fall. My most recent post in this thread was my Mini Trip Report

Played in Quepos, yes, at the Best Western Casino, which is as odd as it sounds.

Small game, I had to stop in every day and ask if they would run it. Finally found out why they were so resistant to run it: no rake, and no one tips the dealer. It was bizarre.

I also stopped in "Casinos" in Tamarindo and another town I can't remember, they all promised poker, but none got the game off. It was an interesting trip.
