There are quite a few hotels in the city and the beach that have casino's and have poker tables. The only problem is that most of the time, there aren't any players playing poker. Just table games...

Looks like the earliest I'll be back will be October. But likely won't get up to San Jose.

Thanks a lot for the info though.

Cash games should be 10% up to $5 max. I think in Panama in some casinos they rake without a cap

Wish I was going to be there - my next scheduled trip is in March. Wouldn't be able to get to Jaco anyway.

This thread hasn't been updated for a while. I'm staying in San Jose for the next 3-4 days and looking for a poker room with multiple NLHE tables running, preferably 1/2 or 2/5.

I checked out horseshoe last night but there was only a single short-handed 1/2 NLHE table running.

Someone mentioned barcelo playa. I also came upon the names clarion and amon.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any input

Hi, your best bet in San Jose would be the No Limit Club @ San Jose Palacio. They usually run at least 2-3 $1/2 tables per day, opening up at 2pm and sometimes they have 2 full tables by 5pm... sometimes. The No Limit Club is having their Christmas tournament this Sat 4th (starts at 7pm) and Sun 5th (day 2 starts at 4pm), $500 buy-in and $25.000 guarantee. I'm actually gonna go play the satellite tonight at 7pm ($50+3) for the christams tourney.

Another option you can look into is the Radisson Hotel Europa, though movement is a bit slower there.

And just last week another poker room opened at the Irazu Hotel, The Winner's Club. Haven't really gone there yet.

I do have a website (www.pokertico.cr) which I try to keep as updated as possible but the last 22 days have been hectic, Palma Real and Hold'em Club closed and these 3 rooms opened their doors. However, don't worry they are not "new" per se... it's just that the people running the Hold'em had a fight and they split and opened two rooms

By the way... Clarion and Amon have been closed for years.

the clarion/amon (they're the same place) have NOT been closed for years. i'm not saying that they are open now, but the game was going daily and had very good action last time i was there in feb. of 09. their website is hotelamonplaza.com. i'm sure you can give them a call and see if the game's still there. have fun. i'm jealous. going to look at plane ticket prices right now, maybe i'll see you there!

Sorry, when I read Clarion I was thinking about the Aurola Holiday Inn (which doesn't even have a casino now). However, I'm pretty sure the Amon closed a while ago too. I could be wrong though as I haven't visited the Hotel and checked it out myself... but I haven't heard anything about that room for a while.

Most players here in San José now go to the No Limit Club (better room IMO) and the Radisson. I used to prop at the Palma Real however they closed down, I think because the No Limit opening nearby killed their business. Radisson has too many regulars IMO while the No Limit caters to the fishier at the c200/500 colones tables (about $0.5/$1) and the whale-like crowd in the $1/2. I've seen $2/5 and even $5/10 tables open, but they are not that common. You can always ask the manager of the room though to see if they can get it going.

Cool.. good luck. I'll probably get there at around 5pm myself. If you find a gringo looking Costa Rican with eyeglasses and a short sleeved blue dress shirt named Pedro... introduce yourself

I thought the same thing when I went to visit a few month's back. However, the girls there are not really that good looking when compared with the rest of the girl population here

I will agree that the tables and chairs at the Del Rey are the best I've seen here. I cannot comment on the play there since I've never actually sat down.

A guy named Dr. Bob runs the Del Rey room. He is pretty gregarious and tries to run it on a customer freindly basis ...... However, you might want to know that the ubitquitous hooker population in the Del Rey casino/bar/restaurant is not allowed into the Poker room to solicit or "be seen".

I do plan on checking out the new room at the Winners Club (Concorde Casino/Irazu) this weekend. I will also check out the new Barcelo Room, as it is run by the folks who ran the Ramada Herradurrs previously.

I have played there quite a few times ......... Stay away, the games are tighter than a sapo's butt in a rainstorm .......

(I am kidding, actually, they are very loose and beatable if you have a tolerance for some huge variance on occasion. I won't give away any insights, just assume that many players really like to chase draws, heads-up.)

Your shirt has a name ? ...... Tell Abe, I promise, I'll come by tomorrow night during the $25K tournament.

Tonight, however, my chips will be splashing pots at the Winners Club.

Actually, Dr Bob is no longer running the Del Rey. I'm not sure who is running it right now, but I think Todd from Palma Real was looking into taking over.
