I am going to Costa Rica in 2 weeks and would like some advice on what casinos to hit up to find a good poker game. Looking for 2-5 and 5-10 no limit holdem First time posting on the site. Thank you for your help.

last time i went to san jose 3 months ago the only option for 2-5 was at the Clarion and that game lasted until about 1130pm before it busted

the beach towns of Jaco and Quepos have poker but it is usually a 1-2 game

Going down for a week in June. Sounds like games do run sometimes which is good news. I guess the best way to find out is to ask around when I'm there.

Beware of the Horseshoe Casino... I don't even know if it's still there, but the Ace of Spades was marked in my game. I got up and left immediately.

You didn't ask them to change the set? I'd do it just to get a reaction out of the dealer just to see if he's in on it and then leave.

Now that I've been to Costa Rica and spent some time there, there is no way I would ever sit in a game and expect it to be legit. Everything in that area of the world seemed shady to me, and I would not play for any kind of real money for fear of being hustled and/or robbed. Just my 2cents.

Yeah.

Nobody in that part of the world should be trusted...

...nice...

...and I get upset when people generalize about Detroit.

I didn't mean that no one in that part of the world should be trusted. I just think that if you're a foreigner gambling there, there's a decent chance the game won't be on the up and up. In a place with a lot of poverty, people are more desperate. And when they are more desperate, they are more willing to try to cheat some rich foreigner. Why take a chance when you can just play online while you're there and wait to get home to play in a live game?

Costa Rica has a lot to offer, but if I was looking for poker, that would not be my destination of choice. There is a lot more to the world and life than poker. If you're going to travel, why would you waste your time in casino when you could do that at home?

Of course, if you're from Detroit, the casinos in Costa Rica will probably be an improvement, so maybe you should check them out?

Sure you didn't.

I must have somehow misinterpreted as xenophobic the clearly implied tolerant nature in the phrase: "Everything in that area of the world seemed shady to me" especially in light of how clearly your broadmindedness is displayed in trying to disrespect me by slamming Detroit. I am certain your impression of Detroit Casinos is deeply rooted in actual personal experience and/or research.

Enjoy the White Bread.

Most of the action these days is at the Clarion downtown San Jose (Casino Amon, formerly Casino Paradiso). They have $2/5 NL every day starting at 3pm and on days that there are tournaments they will also usually have a $1/2 game. You can find a $1/2 NL game going every day at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Sabana (formerly the Coribici).

Depending on when you are here, there might be some decent tournaments. This site has info on (in Spanish) the "Costa Rica Holdem Championship" which is running through June: http://www.bananapoker.net/inicio/index.php

Monday nights at the Clarion there is a 30,000 colone (~$55) buyin tournament at 8pm. It used to have a guaranteed prize pool but there was some issue with the organizer so I think it's just a regular freeze out now.

Thursdays at 8pm there is a 2,000,000 colone (~$3.7k) guaranteed 40,000 colone buyin (~$75) tournament at the Ramada Plaza Herradura Conference Center I believe. It's right next to this casino http://www.thunderbirdresorts.com/in...herradura.aspx They usually end up with around 60 people from what I hear, but I haven't played that tournament myself. The LAPT was held there and its a very nice room. I believe that they also have cash games going after the tourney.

The White House game doesn't run any more, so $2/5 is probably the highest stakes you are going to be able to find. The games are soft, but there are some good regulars. You should be able to figure out who they are pretty quick. I have never seen anything shady in the cash games aside from some uncommon soft playing in the $1/2 games between regs. All of the dealers should announce the action in both Spanish and English, and also speak English fairly well.

One nice thing about the games here is that you can generally live straddle from any position and for any amount, with unlimited restraddles. Some casinos only allow UTG and button "Mississippi" straddles, but most are any position. This can really loosen up the game and get some great action going.

Of course like in any casino you want to pay attention to who is around. If you are cashing out a fair amount of money make sure there isn't anyone watching you closely. Also be sure that nobody follows you out of the casino and don't be afraid to ask for a security escort to your car if you feel it is necessary. Be wary of anyone who tries to befriend you in a shady way, especially if they aren't playing themselves.

It is very important to have your passport with you, or a photocopy of the front picture page as well as the page that has your entrance stamp (clearly readable too. a good idea is to photocopy the front page before you come and have the immigration officer stamp the back of the photocopy as well as your actual passport). If for whatever reason you get pulled over and don't have this, and the cops can tell you are a clueless gringo, you will probably be extorted for all the cash you have on you. As long as you have proof that you are in the country legitimately and you aren't drunk they can't really do anything.

A lot of the cops speak English and will generally be willing to work something out if there are any issues. Typically $40 will be enough to take care of any problems, and anything more than $100 and you're getting taken for a ride. The worst thing that can happen is for the cops to know that you have a lot of cash on you. Don't keep it in your pockets/socks or any place obvious in the car like the glove box. Inevitably they will find some problem that requires a big 'ticket' if they know you have cash to pay them off.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

White House game is done. They pretty much closed the casino and moved a couple of the table games(BJ, Rummy, etc..) to the restaurant. I havent heard of a game at the Horseshoe in a long time but have played there before they closed to "remodel" as they said. Found out that the gov't was trying to close them down for shady practices but not sure.

Clarion, Corobici aka Crown Plaza Herradura are probably the best places to go find a game at. All running around $1/$2 to $2/$5.

Nice post. Thanks for the insights.

I will be spending some significant time in CR over the foreseeable future - mostly on the Pacific Coast. I'll look into the Poker Scene and provide any updates I think may be useful.

Just got back.

Flew (flu?) into San Jose and immediately drove to our place up in the North West (Guanacaste near Liberia). 230 km trip took nearly 5 hours! Roads were in great shape, but a lot of truck traffic and TONS of "Speed Traps" made the trip pretty slow & stressful.

Didn't do a lot. Just hung out in town. Weather reports seemed to indicate rain every day, but only saw a little rain for a few minutes on one day - otherwise hot & sunny without a lot of humidity. Then drove back to SJ for the weekend. Very under-rated town IMO. A little bit of a Buenos Aires vibe - certainly not anywhere near the level of BA, but it has a certain "Old Europe" feel. About 15 degrees cooler. Quite nice.

Did not peel off to check out the Casinos so can't really give a Trip Report on that.

There are some beautiful women here. A melting pot of people. So, you get to see a little of everything. But in general, the Latin girls are pretty hot imo.

Yes. The women appeared curvy in all the good places, firm in the places were you'd want that, and soft in the places where you'd want that.

Nice eyes too.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be back at least one more time this year. However I plan to fly directly into Liberia instead of San Jose, so I may have to look up the action in Tamarindo or some such place.

Or just enjoy the other things CR as to offer.
