I have a friend who owns property there and he says the games are great. He claims they have no idea how to play poker. I see him every weekend. I will try to remember to ask him.

To update the thread:

I just spent the past few days in San Jose, while waiting for a friend of mine to come later this afternoon so we could head off to the rest of the country. Hung out in the city during the day, played poker at night.

The place to play in San Jose now is the Casino Corobici, located at what used to be called the Hotel Corobici, but is now called the Crowne Plaza Hotel. If you tell the cab drivers Hotel Corobici they'll know where to go, and it is about a 3 dollar cab ride from the downtown area.

They spread only 1-2 NL, min buyin 100, max 500. Had two tables going the 3 nights I was there, condensed to 1 table around 2 am, place closed 4am during week, 5am on weekends. For most of the night there were a couple locals who had some idea what was going on, a steady stream of locals who would continuously buy in short-stacked and had no idea what was going on, and a few americans (generally living in CR), most of whom were terrible.

Overall the room was well-run, and a friendly atmosphere.

For anyone who wants to play bigger, I asked about other rooms in town and the only other place I heard mentioned was some room called the "White House" that is up on the top of one of the mountains nearby. Apparently a bunch of locals play there in a 5-10 PLO game. and they occasionally spread other bigger games/tourneys as well. I would be cautious about going to this game though, it is apparently a bit off the beaten path, and a few of the (good player) locals expresssed reservations about the safety in bringing money to/from the game.

For me, action was great at the 1/2 game, [start hidden small sample size brag] up ~1000 over 3 sessions[/end brag].

I would not go to the "White House" to play poker. It sounds very shady there. Anyway, games sound nice, and I'm sure the weather there isnt too bad in March

I'm going for a few weeks leaving next week and would also appreciate any information. Did a few searches but most of the information seemed old/outdated. NL, PLO, Mixed Games...

Thanks.

you are a degen and should just be happy that you have a job that gives you the flexibility to take tons of time off work to travel around the world. Also, i have a feeling your donkery would get crushed in Costa Rica.

Thanks

Anyone been to Costa Rica lately?

Im thinking of moving down there and would hate to have to get a job. They dont pay **** down there... but its cheep and paradise otherwise.

Anyone know if the games anywhere are big enough to live off of?

I would prefer a beach town, but think that Jaco it the only one with a chance of poker.

any experience would be appreciated.

i was down there couple months ago in jaco. i went to the cocal hotel to play. i might have been a bit early cause the room was empty.

i will be staying close to cocal hotel for new years. so i expect to be spending more time in the card room.

San jose is supposed to have a lot more action.

I stayed @ the blue Marlin in san Jose last year. Played in a couple of small games 1,2 I think. There was some $$ on the table. Players were american transplants who sucked. Both were within a block of Blue Marlin. Dont remember the names though..

OK, I've done a "Costa Rico" forum search & didn't find much, so here goes:

Anyone familiar w/ the casinos &/or poker action in Costa Rico? How many casinos are there, how easy or hard is it to find Hold'em games, what are limits, super aggressive or full of limpers & callers? Any info. would be greatly appreciated!

I was in Puerto Rico for a long weekend recently & really enjoyed the poker there! Got questions ask!

My son spent 5 days there in Nov. San Jose was the city I believe. There were several casinos with games going. Played 2 days. 2/5 was the biggest game. Games were mostly US people. I didn't get the impression he'd rush to go back.
