Why is Stud so hard to find? Why is Stud so hard to find?

I remember as a kid in the 70's playing Seven Card Stud as one of the first Poker games I learned how to play. So I have a soft spot for the game. From reading 2+2 books it looks like it used to be a great game, but now I can't find it at Casinos and barely online. In fact, Bovada ditched all it's stud games.

Any ideas why it died and what can be done to bring it back?

The no limit craze and most new players going to hold em/PLO and staying there. Plus the player base getting older. That said there are still plenty of regions where it's played if you want to travel. AC has 5-10, 10-20, 20-40 stud, 75-150, etc every weekend. Foxwoods in CT same thing. Commerce in LA. It's also part of a lot of mixes (either high and/or eight or better). I love the game too but don't see it making a huge resurgence -- but games can still be found.

Stud takes way more skill to be good at then hold em. Hold em has become so popular due to the ease of then game. It's not hard to be ok at hold em. It is hard to be world class. It is hard to be good at stud

My theory is that hold 'em is probably more fun for really bad players. If you start with a bad hand in stud, it is really hard to win money because you have to try to catch up paying off bets 1 street at a time. But you can flop a monster in hold 'em, no matter how poor your original hand is.

Not only do you have to fold many hands that are simply unplayable to survive for long in stud, but you usually have to wait longer to see another hand because the hands generally take longer to play. So this really makes it an awful game for the recreational player who wants to gamble it up.

So really bad players will get tired of stud fast and switch to hold 'em where at least they have a chance of going on a rush playing every trashy hand they are dealt. And the rest of the room will follow them there because they want to win their money.

I think this transition was destined to occur but it was accelerated by the TV boom where many players were introduced to specifically hold 'em and never learned any other games.

I do think the dynamic is different in higher limit games where the psychology of the recreational player is markedly different. I think this is why some higher stakes stud games still do exist and also why so many big games are mixed games. But I think my theory explains why the once common low limit stud games of the past have virtually disappeared.

The original post is right. There is no big game to be played. Cash or tours. This is probably just not enough exciting.

Outside flash in the pan tournaments and POT LIMIT (FFS!) dealer's choice games which are themselves extremely rare in the UK, you will not find a stud game of any kind here. Even in home games everybody refuses to play fixed limit anything.

I know you're in Vegas OP but I just wanted to share my pain!!!

Foxwoods stud games are slowly dying. The 1-3, 1-5 games will always go and the 75-150 still seems to be hanging on but the 5-10 and 10-20 games are rare and the 20-40 is drying up fast. I see long time regs from that game playing NL and PLO now.

The limit hold'em games are dying as well. The 20-40 used to be a GREAT game with 4 tables going. Now you're lucky if there's 1 game. So sad.

Low stakes stud is also dying in LA.. during the weekdays, there's only one table of stud at commerce or bike. On the weekends, commerce will still get about four games. The high stakes still get a 20/40 and 100/200 almost daily. Sometimes two games.
