Trying to beat a drunk

Live/Club Game, 30/60, 5 ante, 10 bring-in, 5 handed

Hero - (66) K, completes, raises, calls
Villain - 2, brings-in, raises, caps

4th street I catch a 6 and he pairs his board. He leads out for maximum. Is there any reason to not play this fast? He's drunk and stuck but isn't exactly brain dead from what I can tell. I'm probably viewed as mostly a nit in stud but, you know...he's drunk. Real drunk too, like slurring words, having a hard time handling his chips, making weird comments...not like he has a beer in front of him as a prop drunk.

ETA - it's stud high

If he will cap it up every street, cap it up. If there's no limit on raising, get all the money in on fourth. As long as he's really wasted/isn't thinking about what you have, you are essentially playing against a random hand (or maybe a bit better, but nowhere near what it would mean if a good, non-drunk player was willing to give you unlimited action).

Ty just checking. The guy somehow lost less money with his hand than I would have sober (well, if you don't count 3rd street anyway). Maybe I'm doing something else wrong.

Wait, he folded when you raised fourth? In that case, your read of his state of mind may not have been accurate.

I assume that villain made trip 2s or aces up but just called every street or something like that.

Don't feel bad, I've never beaten a drunk out of as much as a nickel.

Re: Trying to beat a drunk

I've had a few incredible games on FullTilt back in the day when for a very short time (maybe a month) a drunk/maniac played semi-regularly at the $2-$4 stud hi tables. He would sometimes play quietly for a few hands, but inevitably would play many hands as raise/cap every street. Amazingly, many people would leave the table when he'd do this and I often played him head up or super short handed. If he raised with a lower card than my pair, or if I had any kind of decent draw (high straight or flush), I'd cap up early and keep going every street with as little as one pair higher than his door. With any pair pretty much I'd call. Not sure I was even loose enough.

Had trip 2's on 4th and filled up on 7th. Called the raise on 4th and check/called every street (I filled up on 7th as well). He slurred something about them giving me three kings and looked like he wanted to fold the river (he had a full house!). I wanted to quit poker.

Re: Trying to beat a drunk

While there are times to slow-play trips, I think a lot of players leave money on the table by doing so overall. Raise early and often.

Re: Trying to beat a drunk

Be prepared for a few awful beats, but when you are strong play strong and be prepared for for the drunk to have a much shorter memory span
