Stud Hi/Lo Regular (w/ no Lo Qualifier) - General Question Stud Hi/Lo Regular (w/ no Lo Qualifier) - General Question

Curious to hear others opinions on this topic, as I am pretty new to this game:

In Stud Hi/Lo Regular (No qualifier), I understand that starting hands such as AKK (King door card) should be routinely folded when it looks like the action will be heads up.

However, when there has already been a raise and a call (let's say from a 2 door card and a 3 door card), would it now be correct to come in with AKK (King door card) since it is likely that you have the best high hand currently, and the other 2 players are likely battling each other for the low? If it is correct to come in with this hand when it is 3-way, would it also be correct to 3 bet this hand which would run the risk of the original raiser 4 betting and possibly causing the other low hand to fold? Or is it best to just call for that reason?

I haven't played this game much either, but there is a good section on it in the original SuperSystem, written by David Sklansky, back when this was a game found in casinos often.

IIRC it says big pair type hands (other than A-A-low) should never be played. Even a hand like rolled up Kings would only be playable if it was a multiway pot, and there it's nothing to get that excited about.

We used to play seven stud hi/lo with a declare. It was my favorite game.

As Chill Rob indicates, read David Slansky's section in Super System I for more insight.

I'll leave your post here, but there's a 2+2 stud forum where you might get a better discussion of this game. Or, if you like, I'll move this thread to the stud forum. If you want it moved, please advise me.

My opinion would be a strong no. Scooping would be near impossible unless you started collecting all low cards starting with 4th as it will be hard to get a low to fold with a king door.

But situation would be slightly different with an ace door. There you would have fold equity versus other low hands and pair of kings is a good high for backup

In the 19 game dealer's choice spread at WSOP, a number of top players said they tried to choose stud hi/lo regular as much as possible, for two stated reasons:
1) the instant a player plays a high card up, they instantly mark themselves as something of a mixed game fish
2) this is the game in which players can make the biggest mistakes, essentially freerolling themselves from 3rd street onward

I've never played. Seems like a very interesting game. I'd probably play pretty poorly

Let me rephrase my question then - if you were dealt rolled up kings, how many players would have to already have entered the pot for you to come in?

In my opinion you probably need to think 3 others are in. The main reason is that if there are only two others it could get heads-up on 4th easily and that is not a good spot for you.
