Was playing stud late night Thursday and day Friday (yesterday) at Foxwoods and the room was packed, with the best 5-10 stud games I've seen in awhile. On Thursday night, there was one 10-20, which broke around 2 am, one 20-40 which broke maybe 1 am, one 1-5 which broke around 2 am, one 5-10 HORSE game which broke around 2 am and one 5-10 stud game, which went all night.

Then on Friday, there as one 75-150 game, one 20-40 game, no 10-20 game?, one 5-10 HORSE game and 4 5-10 games, plus a couple tables each of 1-3 and 1-5.

I played the 5-10 stud game Thursday night until about 4 am, and it was a really good game (and for once I was not the youngest player). Friday, I played mostly NLHE, but a little 5-10 and the games looked good. Could 5-10 stud be perhaps a good limit for people who want a change from 1-2 nlhe -- definitely lots of new faces, in any event, for the first time in years.

Do they ever run a stud8 only at FW?

foxwoods is a stud hold out and it is still strong there. a great opportunity for you to get good at it and add that game to your repertoire. as well as make some money along the way.

I play 5-10 periodically at FW, but have been trying to work on NLHE since FW and AC are really the only places you can get stud games anymore. All limits of stud seem to be going regularly now (75-150 is going almost every time I'm there, and there was a 150-300 interest list one time!) so maybe I'll start working on stud again.

I have never seen a stud8 only game there. There is an O8 5-10 that goes fairly often. The really encouraging thing was that there were mutliple tables, new players and the games were fun with plenty of gamble, not that different than the 1-2 game.

I was able to get a 10/20 Stud 8 game going at 2 AM on a Wednesday once... 10/20 stud, 20/40 stud, and a 15/30 OE game all broke pretty simultaneously and I got people to start the 10/20 Stud 8.

Proof:

Also, I will comment that the 10/20 is nitty and the 20/40 is usually good.

I used to play stud pretty regularly in AC, but the last couple of years have been lame unless you play 20/40 or higher.

Taj still spreads 1-5, 5/10, 10/20, 20/40, & 40/80. They also have 15/30 OE.
The 5/10 & 10/20 games were really good up until the room itself died off.
Unfortunately those games don't get newer/casual players anymore, just grumpy old regs.

Borgata spreads 20/40 & 75/150. There's ZERO interest in any other levels.

you're saying one could make 200/night playing stud there? I'm in the wrong profession

($200/night * 5 nights a week) * 52 weeks a year = tough way to make an easy living

Well, it is not exactly in the neighborhood, but Commerce typically has 20/40, 30/60, and 100/200 going regularly. Plus some lower stakes games I believe.

Is the 20-40 stud game good enough that a player new to stud would not get crushed too hard while trying to learn the game and get experience as long as I have strong general poker fundamentals?

I am curious because I have noticed a lot of the big fish from 5-10 and 10-20 nl sometimes jumping into the the 75-150 stud games. I think it would be beneficial for me to become better at stud so I could play in good games.

In my very limited experience, the 20-40 game at Foxwoods is a mix of good players and pretty bad ones. The biggest difference between it and the lower stakes games is that pretty much all the players are fairly aggressive. Stud is a very different game than nlhe, so your biggest problem if you are good enough to play 5-10 nl probably won't be reading the players as building a solid understanding of the game.

I dunno. While Stud seems to dwarf Stud8 online (at least on PokerStars) in terms of popularity, Stud8 seems to be the more popular game live, especially in high stakes mixed games.

Personally I think Stud8 is in a better position but that could be just my imagination

The problem with stud/OE games at FW >5-10 is it's the same people ALL THE TIME. I've been going for years and I see the same group of angry, bitter, love to complain ppl at 20-40 stud. It's remarkable actually that they've been able to play almost daily for so many years. And as for OE, it's generally the same group of bespectacled, bearded guys and that little latin looking girl. It's one of my favorite games to play but it's hardly ever worth sitting down when you can go get paid off with the nuts at 2-5NL

Yeah, that's why the 4 5-10 games with new faces were exciting. I don't play 2-5, but the 1-2 nlhe games at fox are obv. much better than the stud games. I just enjoy playing stud sometimes.

When you play OE you absolutely have to play by hands and not downs or else people constantly take 30 minute breaks every other down. It's ridiculous...

Reviving this thread: what's the state of stud at FW in 2017? What games run and when? How good are they? Any mixed games?

Do you have the Bravo app? It tells you what games are going at any point in time. 20-40 stud hi goes all the time, and is likely the healthiest of them all. However, 75-150 also runs regularly. There are lower stakes games, but I never pay attention to them.

I think the 20-40 game is almost the last bastion of a decent mid-stakes stud game left. With the possible exception of Atlantic City, which I have never tried. In the last year, the 30-60 and 100-200 games at Commerce have died. And the 20-40 game frequently struggles to keep a single game going. So Foxwoods is starting to stand alone.

I think the 20-40 game is great. A week ago Saturday, there were five full tables going for a while. With all kinds of action and terrible players. The games run almost 24/7. There are some solid regulars, but you can spot them pretty quick. There are also a bunch of terrible regulars. I only play there a few times a year, but they are there year-in, year-out. They must easily drop $50K to $100K annually.

I have been playing live maybe 20-30 days a year, for several years now. I think the Foxwoods game is as good as it has ever been.

Indeed I am aware of Bravo and use it to check on various rooms from time to time, but I am unable to check it religiously at all hours of the day and days of the week, so I appreciate your detailed and thoughtful reply, which gives me a much better sense than Bravo ever could. I look forward to jumping into the 20/40 next summer when I turn 21. I've done quite well at the 5/10 stud at Twin River (18+), but the game runs so inconsistently (1 Friday per month it's usually going and maybe 2-3 weekdays but it's random which ones in my experience).

As a PS, the floors at TR have told me that if I showed up with 6-7 players who wanted to play higher stakes stud, they'd spread some 10/20, as long as it was a quite time. I haven't been since they added 6 more tables, so that should just increase our chances. I'm back next month, so let's get a 2p2 10/20 stud meetup!
