Question about play of (9A)9 in Stud 8 in video hand Question about play of (9A)9 in Stud 8 in video hand

$5/10 stud 8 on Bovada, ante 75c, bringin $2.50.

Cards, 2c, 5s (9cAh)9s, Kd, Ks. 2c brings in, 5s completes, Ks raises, 5s 3-bets, hero folds, Ks calls.

Author says he played the hand because Ks are dead and As live, plus he has an overcard to the Ks. Says he folded, because he was up against one players with split Ks and the other with 3 low cards including an ace. This turned out to be true.

I would have folded initially to the raise from a low card. Is the call with 9A9 a good play?

Action is a bit screwy, when does the 9A9 put money in?

Where was this hand? (was it one of my ancient ones?)

9A9 calls the complete from the 5 and folds when it gets jammed by the 5 and K. I left out that 9A9 calls initially. This is from Crush Live Poker, but online on Bovada.

Meh. I don't hate it with no aces behind. I might've reraised to try to get it HU though.

Folding once it gets jammed is obv standard.

With two Ks out it is actually more likely someone has a pair of Kings. And that is a bad spot to be in Stud 8 even though one of their cards is dead.

Would be way better if you had (6A)6 where you could possibly go low or at least represent that you are.

Sounds like an initial raise or fold on 3rd if I'm understanding the action correctly.

The chances of paired kings are about the same with 2 kings as 1 king out, as with 2 kings available, there are about half as many combinations of kings possible as with 3 kings available. It is a worse situation for 9A9 though, because there are other hands one of the Ks can have that they will play, such as a buried pair higher than 99 or a 3-flush with a low card and ace.

I was surprised, because I thought it was a fold. I know aces were live, but it seemed to marginal to play against the raise from the low card with 2 Ks and another low card to act. It would be playable if the 5 had folded or in general in late position with no complete in front. Of course if the ace were showing it would be playable.

The action was 2 completes, hero with 9 calls, then folds when K and 5 jam.

Unless your opponent is drunk, this is a fold. Its not close. Its not a call after the 5s completes. If somehow, you called that, its bad, but not "you must be drunk" bad. If you strongly advocate calling after the K raises, please get your name on the Foxwoods OE list! There will be a game.

The final math works out that with two kings out it is 24% more likely one of them has a pair of kings as opposed to when there is just one out there.
