Is it possible to not get drawn out on?

Am I doing something wrong, or just the unluckiest stud player there ever was? About 45 BBs down so far today. I'm starting to really hate whoever the sadistic bastard was who invented this game

Stud Hi is a game of ridiculous variance. If you can't stomach 100BB swings, let alone 45BB swings it is probably not the game for you.

You played the hand correctly.

Thanks everyone. I just wanted to know if I did anything terribly wrong here. Even thanks to the incredibly sarcastic responses :-)

Re: Is it possible to not get drawn out on?

Hello,
Just to give some criticism that may actually allow yourself to improve a bit. Let us think how we may have played it differently.
What if we check raise on 4th or 5th? Maybe one of the three callers could've laid down if forced to call 2 cold at some point thus improving our chances of aces holding up?
As played everyone probably had you on exactly the hand you had. Which should make it quite easy to play against. No?
Another thought is even if we check and they don't bet we save because they woulda called one bet each anyway?
Maybe some of the experts on here could comment on these thoughts instead of being sarcastic? Maybe we could all learn something?
Then I could quit work and become a professional stud poker player. Awesome!

Don't give yourself the gratification of venting and eventually once your body stops feeling the benefit of feeling negative about these outcomes it will adjust so that these feelings don't occur.

Miyamoto Musashi was a legendary Japanese samurai and his guide to life is your guide to poker.

Accept everything just the way it is.
Do not seek pleasure for its own sake.
Do not, under any circumstances, depend on a partial feeling.
Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world.
Be detached from desire your whole life long.
Do not regret what you have done.
Never be jealous.
Never let yourself be saddened by a separation.
Resentment and complaint are appropriate neither for oneself nor others.
Do not let yourself be guided by the feeling of lust or love.
In all things have no preferences.
Be indifferent to where you live.
Do not pursue the taste of good food.
Do not hold on to possessions you no longer need.
Do not act following customary beliefs.
Do not collect weapons or practice with weapons beyond what is useful.
Do not fear death.
Do not seek to possess either goods or fiefs for your old age.
Respect Buddha and the gods without counting on their help.
You may abandon your own body but you must preserve your honour.
Never stray from the Way.

This looks like a case of runbad. I can't fault the play. The only thing that you might have done differently is maybe try for a check raise on Fourth to eliminate one or both low card boards. That's what I'd do unless these other players were so passive they'd check behind. Based on what happened, that looks likely. Seat 3, having made a pair of jacks, while holding three to a straight, should have raised. Even if he knew jacks were second best, raising to get rid of a developing small straight draw, and a small flush draw would have helped his chances to suck out with two smaller pair. That he didn't suggests he probably wouldn't bet if it had been checked to him.

Yeah nobody bets at these stakes... they just call to the river. Well, I guess there are also those who bet and raise all the time regardless of what they have or anyone else's board.

Stop playing Stud HI. That's probably the best advice anyone could give you. Start playing stud8/razz, much better games.
