Re: ****Is this the June LC Thread? OSCourse it is!

At the Stud8 round in a super-loose 10-20 live mixed game, I folded (KQ)A next to act after the bring-in, and one of the other players said to me "you don't like this game huh?" and then proceeded to have a conversation with 2 other players who agreed that you always have to "at least see another card" with an ace in your hand. All I could do was smile.

Thanks Chips but getting chatted up by a cigarette girl is not what I was looking for.

AKA candy girls according to wiki.

I guess they are fairly well down the pecking order in casino employment opportunities.

Rusty: I just got my Raspberry PI delivered, any suggestions what to do with it with my boy (just 6) as a project to teach him about computers?

fuuuuu I still have not managed to get one.

So the funnest stuff I have been doing recently, frankly, is making little machines of various types. It's not too hard to buy and operate little servo motors or stepper motors, and there are some nice programming interfaces to those. They have, like, real world physical applications which is nice. There's a cute little project out on the web I saw that is a servo-operator cat-laser-toy thing. Basically a laser on a platform controlled by servos and it randomly moves the laser around. I have half-completed a little machine that counts and dispenses poker chips, and another which is basically a computer-controller sentry turret (for a paintball gun, water cannon, etc)

If not that, then a nice thing to do to get people interested in computers/programming is usually games or graphics. I don't know if the raspberry pi is particularly suited to that.

Allegedly it's capable of doing high def video so maybe making a little set-top box that'll play videos, maybe browse youtube, play computer games, etc, might be nice.

I could google raspberry pi but maybe Rusty would rather explain it to me?

It's a pretty full featured computer about the size of a deck of cards, that costs, what, about 25 bucks? I mean it is not a powerhouse, it has about as much computational power as a really good smart phone, but it has network connections, USB ports, onboard memory, a decent video card with hardware video decoding, display output (I think HDMI?), etc. It's a really nice cheap platform to make a little computer to control some simple projects.

They initially made a few thousand of them (they were more or less designed as a hobby by someone) and they sold out *immediately*. They licensed the design to some larger manufacturers and they're ramping up product. The "making" community really likes them.

I wonder if you could get Android running on it. It's got the right CPU and O/S (ARM on Linux).

You might end up with a boatload of apps available from Google Play, a large number of them available free.

^ I should note that I'm pretty sure that *I* could get Android running on it, but for various reasons related to my employment, I probably couldn't release it open source. I know people at work who could though -- they work in the open source division, I don't.

I'm not sure, maybe. If it's *easy* then it's probably already been done. The android toolchain doesn't really mesh with my skillset so I'm not exactly motivated towards that direction anyway (I wrote an android app for myself, it's OK, the platform is fine but I'm not much of a java programmer and I find the deployment cycle pretty frustrating)
