HU razz: Helmuth raises on 3rd with9 showing

Hellmuth Starts to Separate

Phil Hellmuth
9675

Don Zewin
658J

Hellmuth brought it in, Zewin completed, Hellmuth raised, and Zewin re-raised. Hellmuth called. Zewin bet out on fourth and fifth street, and Hellmuth called both bets. Hellmuth led on sixth when he made a better board, and Zewin thought for a bit before releasing.
Just curious, is it standard to raise with a 9 showing? Zewin should be completely with any cards I would think. Also, we are playing HU so there is less ante to steal, so theoretically, there should be less stealing than last two players at a full table. Plus both players are pretty short stacked.

Rest seems sort of standard. Zewin obviously paired and probably started with a 2-card hand.

I have no idea if it's 'standard' at those stakes, but I'm wondering just exactly why you'd want to do it? Basically half the deck will make our board look hopeless on 4th, and if villain has garbage, I don't know why we want to fold out his bluffs.

I did see Hellmuth do the same thing in a different hand and he lost a huge huge pot, so it doesn't always work out very well.

What's strange though is that neither player was auto-completing on 3rd, or even close to it. there was a lot of calling the bring-in in the HU match.

oh well i cant comment on specific match just in general. if villain was limping all his good hands maybe helmuth thought he had garbage when he actually completed.

the only thing you accomplish is turning on max variance and giving a nice edge ..so its bad ..watched some of the ft until a hand came up hellmuth betting xx9754x and got called by a t7 low ..awesome final table

In a cash game the answer is always yes against an opponent who raises ATC in this spot.

In a tournament, the decision is more complicated. Generally yes, but it depends on stack sizes, antes, etc.

until your opponent starts getting tricky and you wind up making bad calls/checks and bets

I dunno about that, but it's certainly close.

I believe they were HU at this point, so no ICM value to worry about. The antes were atrociously high throughout, but with only two players it has a smaller impact on 3rd and 4th st decisions.
