I am looking to get into some Stud games. I am wanting a common size buy in for stud games. I have seen 40 big bets up to 100-200 big bets. Lets start with a 15-30 stud game at a casino. What would the normal buy in be?

I don't see why anyone would even buy in for 40bb, that's a lot.

I usually go in discrete racks. I'm guessing 15/30 is played with $5 chips? So a rack is $500 which is 16bb.

You can't get more money in per hand than 12bb unless your casino has unlimited HU action in which case it depends but it's rare you'll get in more than an extra bet that way. So 16bb is kind of an awkward size. You want to keep at least 12bb on hand and dusting off 4bb is easy enough.

If it's not unusual to buy in larger I'd go for 2 racks ($1000, 32bb) and call that good. Don't see any reason to have 100bb, sheesh.

Buying in for around 40 BBs is pretty standard for me and I don't see any good reason not to do it. I just like having plenty of money on the table and at home. You can weather a dry/ bad run early and not be a "short stack".

I certainly wouldn't buyin for less than your planned max loss. The people who are constantly buying chips from other people or dealer are almost always the biggest losers. Why put yourself in the position to look like them?

No one has ever seen me buy chips at the table and no one ever will.

i like to buy in for 50 bets, and leave/quit if i get down to under 10, unless game is very good then just keep reloading...

Just to be a contrarian...if you're waiting for a seat in a bigger game that uses the same denomination of chips in a big room where the stud games are normally played on the side of the room farthest from the cage.

In a 5/10 LHE game, I will buy in for $200-300, so three times that range seems appropriate. The last time I played stud in a casino, I typically bought in for $100 in a 1-5 spread limit game. It was an easily beatable game where I was never in danger of having to rebuy.

If you can't scope out the table before getting chips to see what a typical stack looks like, you can always buy additional $25 or $100 chips to keep in your pocket.
