What a beautiful game.

The meaning of some poker terms has changed over the years. At one time, a seven-five (2-7 (KCL)) game with with one blind was called a "blind game." If there were two forced blind bets, the small blind was called the "ante," the big blind was called the "straddle." (Now "straddle" has come to mean an optional blind.)

The small blind, or "ante," was almost often the button. It was sometimes "live" and sometimes "dead." (In a 2-5, 10-to-bring-it-in game, if the ante was "dead," it would cost the button $10 to call a $10 bet, if the ante was "live," it would only cost $8.)

This may have been an evolution from when the button anted for all the players to promote simplicity and accountability, with it moving to the left of the button to promote action.

I don't think I ever saw a game where all the players "anted" by putting a chip in the pot, but poker is such a dynamic institution that it is difficult to remember how things were done 3 years ago, much less in the Stone Age.

In a 2-5 game where a player could "limp" for $5, it was called "gypsying" instead.

If you read the memoirs of some of the old Texas road players, it's easy to get the impression that all the big NL games were hold 'em. In fact, over half of them were probably lowball, with half of those being 2-7. And if you asked these guys at the time who the greatest no-limit players were, they would say Northern Californians, by which they meant the Bay Area and the Cameo Club.

It was a great game, but there's a reason it died. Of course, kids play razz now...

Re: 2011 WSOP TRIP REPORT - BRACELET WINNER ITT

Don't know how I missed this thread but I'm all caught up and looking forward to more parts (if there are any).

Couple of thoughts:

- As someone who had a financial interest in Chips' staking arrangement, I was more than pleased with the setup. I've done a hundreds of other staking arrangements in the past and this was the first time I've seen such a profit share. It ended up working out well though.
- I wish Eric would have talked about some of the shenanigans at the Horseshoe, including getting into an argument with one of the grumpy old regs there while sweating me.
- I hope he includes some craps stories in later parts of this TR.

Sidetrack:
- If you ever find yourself in a 3-way Razz pot with electrical and osc, quit trying to win and just fold. I've learned the hard way.

No, I'm just going to stop.

So after Steve and I busted the 10-game, we hung out for a while; he also introduced me to CTS. This was the day of the senior's event, which meant there were 700,000 people around and literally zero tables available for anything. They have a mega satellite for $550 every night at 8pm, and on days where a $10k event is following, they make the mega satellite that game instead. That meant that it was 8/b tonight! Whatever Steve wanted to do (leave?) I convinced him to play the 8/b satty. We go up to the cage to see what's the deal and all they know is that it's delayed, but there's still like 1-2 hour late reg on it. That's good enough, and we go to Martorano's, which is quite good, actually.

We get back and the satellite has started, but you kinda have to wait until a table opens up or a spot or something, it was weird. So we stood around for a little while and then they announced more seats were for sale... I get my ticket (and free $10 food coupon, ship it!)

I get to the satellite and it's the greatest thing ever. It was better than scrooge mcduck swimming in his vault of gold coins. One lady was like calling every bet to the river and the would just flip her hand over and expect the dealer to read it. Frank Mariani was there, open raising like every hand and winning almost all of them.

After a little while, Chainsaw sits down, and apparently started acting like a jackass right away, because I tweeted about it. So after I get trips on 5th but Mariani has a flush, and then I start with aces after he opened 9J8 utg into two aces and a bunch of low cards, I bust. I'm obviously suuuuuuper disappointed, and then Chainsaw says that I can rebuy. I'm like "wtf?" and he's like "ask the floor", in a way that implied that he didn't think I believed him, which wasn't the case; I had just never heard of such a thing. So I go back to the cage and re register (ship another food coupon...).

When I come back to the room, I feel a little bad about tweeting about Chainsaw being a jackass, so I go shake his hand and thank him for letting me know it was a re-entry. He's like "you gotta give me a 1% freeroll now", so I'm like "fine".

and get put at a much different table w/ the same ~4500 or whatever starting stack at like 300/600 or something now lol. I run the stack up and down, but mostly up. Like 105 people started or something, so we actually get 5 seats to play for. David Levi's at my new table, but I bust him. Steve Diano drives by telling people to come sign up for a $1285 8/b STT if we bust; he's not exactly the best spokesman for... anything, so he was ignored I guess. I win a nice big pot off Levi, and slowly people start busting.

At break, I go back to check on my old table, and am talking to Steve and Sean Urban, who Steve had introduced me to earlier and FTed the $1500 8/bament. The dealer knows who chainsaw is, so he starts busting on him and telling us that he was messing with him, saying "hey chainsaw, the tables over there are using the auto shufflers and we're not..." and he like flies out of the chair apparently and stuff. he then asked us if we'd heard the rumor that he paid a bunch of homeless people $50 to go bring get a newspaper w/ a $100 free slot play coupon in it and redeem it or whatever and bring it to him. Unfortunately, none of us could confirm or deny that.

I eventually get moved back to my original table w/ maybe 32 left or so, and I have a big stack of chips. Chainsaw sees this and starts licking his lips for the 1%. He kept asking for my name and twitter and stuff and of course I'm not going to tell him, although I would have given him 1% of the $10,200 or whatever it was had I binked a seat had I won. Lots of huge & ridiculous pots at my table, and some fun people. Chainsaw misses some draws on the river in a pot that sort of cripples him and some guy bets like open 8s and a bad 8 low into whatever board he had, I think it was like 44x8 and he goes bonkers berating the guy for making a bet chainsaw couldn't call unless he'd had him beat, and this other guy and I are like "actually, you could have had a worse 8 low and called" and he busts soon after.

BONUS CHAINSAW STORY:

Spoiler:

With 24 left, I'm at a new table after the redraw, where this Euro guy has a "that's right, cannon rush!" starcraft 2 t-shirt w/ like 6-7 photon cannons on it and a few pylons. it was amazing, but I can't find it anywhere on the internet. wtf? I might even pay a bounty for that if someone else does...

I think I was playing the satellite a little splashy, but we still had a long way to go in until the top 5 got paid... Maybe it just seemed that way b/c the levels were getting pretty big... I made a hero call on the river w/ vs. a low w/ AK high after a really good read and not folding 5th, but unfortunately he had ended up pairing the river, so I wasn't good. I busted a little while later in 18th. I had already bought into the 10k, anyway, though.

It was fairly late, and it was also Friday, which meant I'd checked out of the Rio that morning to avoid the weekend rates, so I found ceegee, and we went back to his place in the last cab we'd have to take since I had rented a car for the next afternoon to pick up before the $10 8/bament.

Re: 2011 WSOP TRIP REPORT - BRACELET WINNER ITT

Chainsaw is the nuts. Played a low buy in HORSE with him last year at Binions. He was complaining the whole time about the structure, etc. I'm like it's a $300 buy in or whatever it was.

Finally, he goes busto on back to back hands of Holdem to me. First he is holding QQ when I have AK and I bet every street on a K hi flop into a dry side pot on bubble. Bitches about to me when we show down. Then very next hand I am OTB and open JJ..he 3 bets AA and I call. Flop Jxx. Then the raising starts until he is all in and I drag a monster. Starts screaming to all his buddies to come look, whining about the structure, etc. It was priceless. I just smiled and laughed the whole time.

Re: 2011 WSOP TRIP REPORT - BRACELET WINNER ITT

he late reg'd the razz event and was seated in the 8 seat and i was in 1 seat...every time he played a pot and someone called his completion/bet he would "nice hand" like "how dare you call my bet, i'm chainsaw!"...like every street, every bet. It was kinda weird. So every time he did the same thing, calling bets, completions i would just be overly enthusiastic "nice hand! nicely played chainsaw!"

i mean i thought he was doing it the first time someone called his bet with a worse board...but he did it every single time he made a bet and someone called! lol. So awesome. Like, everyone is supposed to autofold when he plays a hand(which is probably correct b/c he's so damn nitty )
