I played 16 or so hours at the trop on Friday and Saturday... checked in Friday night and left Sunday morning for friend's birthday, got the $99 and $129 poker rates.

I probably spend more time at the trop than anywhere else because I like the room. In my opinion it's the best on the boardwalk (only Taj as more tables, but the room is really noisy and dirty) and 2nd best in AC (after Borgata of course). However I generally take bus trips down from NYC so the Trop is by far the most convenient.

The 1/2 games at the Trop are so soft... was on a heater Saturday afternoon where I ran my 300 buy in to 1287 in less than 4 hours. People just kept bluff-shoving when I held the nuts. Played some 2/5 and ran about even. Every time I go to the trop to play 2/5 I always see the same people (especially the one white guy with the crutches).

Somebody hit the BBJ jackpot on Saturday afternoon too, right after I left the poker room. 100k jackpot, now back down to 37k

I also miss the 04-06 Trop.

Then again, I also sometimes miss the downstairs Borg poker room just for nostalgia's sake. Those post-boom days were a pretty fun time in general.

I used to love the Trop, and haven't been there in many years. You really think they're 2nd best in AC?

I've played at all the rooms in AC except Harrahs and yeah, i think they're second best. The Borgata by far is miles ahead because of the borgata babes and game selection, but the Trop is not far behind if you're a 1/2 or 2/5 player. The room isn't noisy or dirty like the Taj Mahal, and it's large enough not to feel cramped (unlike Caesar's). Generally the waitress service is pretty good. Only complaint is sometimes there will be no 2/5 games running at like 8am or so, but the 1/2 games are sufficiently deep stacked by then.

IMO the Trop is really running off a cliff. I like the room for sentimental reasons, because it is spacious, and I like the non-gambling offerings the Trop has. But when I was there this past Wed-Thurs, the room was a ghost town. About 6 tables going, all 1-2 NL and 2-4 LHE. Apparently the 1-5 stud game doesn't even go anymore, not that that was a hot game.

I hit 5 rooms during my stay and only the Showboat was slower than the Trop. Bally's at midnight had as much action than the the Trop did, and this was between 5-7, when the room usually gets filled with people waiting for the 7 o'clock tourney to go off. I was commiserating with some of the regs at my 2-4 table about it; talking about the good days when the Trop had 4-8 LHE, the pink game, 10-20 LHE and stud. It would be nice to see some steps taken to try to save the room. Something besides BBJ and room deals, something different and creative.

Man, that bums me out. Some of the first poker I ever played was the 4-8 at the Trop.

And the pink chip game was legendary. People used to rave about it on here.

Up until 2007 or so, a typical Trop lineup on a Saturday would be ;

1/2 & 2/5 NLHE
2/4, 4/8, 7.50/15 (pink chip) LHE
1-5 (later 3/6) & 5/10 7CS
3/6 O8 (sometimes)

I can't say for sure what exactly happened to the Trop poker room, but I think it was really hurt by the "newer" rooms (Showboat, Caesar's, Hilton briefly, etc) that opened a few years back.
IMHO, if there were less poker rooms in AC, the Trop could've been a solid #3 behind Borgata & Taj. Now it's basically a 1/2NL & 2/4 house, just like all the other rooms in AC nowadays.

My belief has always been that AC poker could've survived (and thrived) with only five poker rooms.

1. Borgata (post expansion)
2. Taj
3. Trop
4. Harrah's (post expansion)
5. Bally's

I agree with your statement and list, but I would have swapped Caesars for Bally's. That room was just so depressing and dirty when I was there the other day.

I hope someone from Trop is reading this thread and realizes how big a deal treating players well makes for the business. Trop was my favorite hotel. I went to Borg. Borg stopped offering room rates so I went to Harrah's. Each change was precipitated by my feeling that that Casino wanted my business and treated me well. Each new change was due to service.

Borg is starting to win my business back because they have started offering poker rates again and treat me as a valued customer. Unfortunately Trop, I am never coming back because what you guys did pissed me off so much.

Why did they piss you off? The Trop offers players room rates with Four hours of rated play? What did they do to turn you away?

I agree that the room is just yucky and it is hard to get around. I liked to play there also because of the other amenities offered by the property, but I now go to other rooms because the poker room is not very nice. I hope they fix it up a little. Last time I played there I told Charlie that they needed to fix up the place and he told me that he hoped it would happen after the buyer took over the place. It's been at least 6 months since that happened and it sounds like it's still a dump.

Its earlier in this thread. I had played at trop many times and used the poker rate many times. However after a year of not playing they told me that I did not have enough qualifying hours. I discussed it with the poker room and they assured me that I should book the trip and if I played the required number of hours I would get the poker rate. At the end of the trip despite playing enough hours to qualify while there they made me pay full price and the poker room would do nothing once I was there to help me out.

Totally short sighted poor management and I will never go back there. They are easily losing out on thousands of business from me per year now. I would also warn anyone that plays at this room and uses the rate that if there is a screw up the poker room will not get your back.

So I've never played at the Trop before but will be heading to AC for a weekend in August. Does anyone have experience with trying to still get a poker rate in this situation?

I can get a room Caesars for $189 and $279 guaranteed but if I book at Trop at reg. price it's $254 and $404. I called Trop yesterday and asked about this but I was talking to reservation staff and not the poker room. They told me I'd have to have it cleared with the "pit boss".

Any tips on whether this is possible and if so, who I should try to contact. I don't want to get stuck paying $254 and $404 for that room. I'd rather stay at Caesars but the poker rate would make the Trop well worth it. I'd have no problems knocking out 8 hours between the two days.

The Trop poker rate offers (that Trop e-mails to me) specifically state that 4 hours of cash poker play must be recorded prior to booking a poker rate. Unless someone has previously been to the Trop and met the requirement, it seems that you can not get the poker rate. Whenever I have booked a room at the poker rate, they check that I qualify before they confirm the reservation.

I suggest you talk to the poker room directly to confirm what their policy is and determine if they can do anything to help you.

A few months ago, Tropicana was allowing players with no previous play to call and reserve at the poker room rate during the week (Sunday-Thursday), under the condition that they played 4 hour per day during their stay, or they would be charged the regular room rate. To receive the weekend poker room rate, you had to have significant prior play history, averaging at least 4 hours per day, and your account and prior play had to be reviewed by a manager before the rate would be approved.

You can always call the poker room and ask, but being a summer weekend, and you having no previous play history, I am going to say your chances are slim and none. You might have had a slightly better chance if it was the off-season.

Does Trop spread anything besides 2/4 LHE & 1/2-2/5 NLHE anymore ?

3/6 LHE. Once in a blue moon they get enough interest for 5/10 or pink chip LHE.

I played 2/4 or 3/6 O8 at the Trop late last year; I believe it was on a Saturday evening.

ok last night, 2/5 must move game #1, seat 3. old nitty type player with his friend sitting in a chair behind him, watching him play. player has 2 poker cards in plain view in front of him and they both get thrown out once an hour to get scanned.

I am watching this for 3 hrs until I get called to the main game. his friend is picking up comps including room offers as well as poker rates for being a spectator not to mention they talk to each other in non english only, even after being asked not to by one of the dealers.

What would people do? would anyone privately tell floor scanner about this?

Nope..its none of my business and they aren't cheating anyone at the table.

About a month ago trop had a 5/10NL game going on a Saturday night. That's the highest I've ever seen go there.

I used to play 15/30/45 hi-low stud at the Trop but those days are long gone. They used to have 5/10 NLHE on the weekends there all the time.

I also gave up on the Trop because I also grew tired of the spectator involvement in hands as well as the non-english chatting. The floor never stops the non-english chatter even when people complain about it. I agree that throwing out two trop cards for getting comps isn't my problem, but "two players to a hand" and talking at the table in another language is a problem and it was too much for me. It's too bad because i liked the room location but it is very poorly managed. I complained about the players constantly talking to their buddies during a hand and the talking in another language but it didn't any good. So now I play elsewhere. I think there are a lot of grinders who play in teams at the Trop.

I wouldn't go there again even for a freeroll. IMHO I think the poker room management needs to be cleaned out. The room sucks.
