Finally got to the Showboat for the first time this past Saturday. Overall I was very impressed with the poker room. The setup was nice. I liked how the poker room is in the House of Blues area - it feels separate from the rest of the casino, and relatively quiet without being too isolated from the main casino. (And the main casino at Showboat is extremely loud.) The chips, tables, and chairs were all very nice.
I played in the 11am tournament, made it to the final 2 tables but was card dead at the end. There were the usual mix of terrible and pretty good players in the tournament. One guy had the PokerStars shirt and crazy-eye sunglasses that he put on every time he was in a hand, like an imitation Raymer. Seemed like a pretty nice guy though, and he was definitely a good player. He made the final table, not sure if he won it. I ended up desperation-shoving with J9 and lost to KT when neither of us paired. I think there were 81 runners total, 8 made the money. I think I busted out in 14th. I liked the structure and the fact that there were no antes. Gave you more room to maneuver than most of the daily tournaments I've tried.
After that I played some 1-2NL. Play was typically loose for live 1-2. I lost a pretty big pot when I called a $12 preflop raise with 99. Flop came J-3-7, my opponent bet $12 again. With that weak bet I figured he had overcards or a small pair, so I tried to represent the J by raising to $40. He called, and he only had about $50 left. I shoved on the turn when a 4 came. He called again and showed TT, saying "I figured you had the Jack but wanted to see it." The river was a T giving him a set, so I was kinda glad I didn't have the Jack.
Later I won a big pot when I called a raise to $12 on the button with 3 callers with 89 offsuit. It was a loose call but people were willingly going all-in with top pair, so I figured my odds were good if I hit a big flop. Flop came 2-3-8 with 2 diamonds. Preflop raiser bet $15, then another player called. I just called (probably should've raised but I wasn't too confident with just a pair of 8's with a 9 kicker). Next card was a 9d, giving me 2 pair but putting a possible flush on the board. First player went all-in for his last $45, next guy called, and I called. Last card was a Q of clubs, opponent went all-in for his last $28 but didn't look happy about it. I called and my 2-pair was good (one opponent had AQ with the A of diamonds and other had KQ with the Queen of diamonds, so they were drawing for the flush.) I won a nice pot even though I played the hand pretty awful.
Only other notable hand was when I got AA and raised a few limpers to $15, got re-raised to $40. He had about $150 behind so I just went all-in, and got called by AK. My Aces held up. Overall I won about $200 in the cash games and lost $100 on the tournament.
I thought the room had a nice friendly vibe to it. Seems to cater to the lower-limit players so it felt more laid-back than the Borgata. The floorpeople and dealers were all very nice and helpful. Many of the dealers looked barely old enough to gamble themselves, but they were good and very nice. None of the surly dealers I've occasionally encountered elsewhere. Many of the female dealers were also quite easy on the eyes, a nice bonus.
Overall I enjoyed it and plan to go back soon with my wife and hopefully take advantage of the poker rate. Here's a couple of pics I took of the room (apologies for my crappy cellphone camera):
