Showboat (Atlantic City, NJ) Showboat (Atlantic City, NJ)

part of the reason Caesars is shutting down Showboat is because there are too many casinos in A.C.

selling to a competitor is not what Caesars wants to do, i.e., they want the market to contract versus maintaining the status quo

This is from last month. Maybe it will happen.

Caesar's may want to buy Revel and try to compete with Borgata (good luck). To do this they would have to shed a property to stay within the law that states that no company can own more than four casinos in AC. Who know? Time will tell.

I don't see this happening. The article does some "hand waving", but it is basically no content.

As CET is entering/trying to enter other regional markets, they are limiting their risks in a region that needs to shrink.

Yup, RIP Showboat. And I wish all of the employees there all the best in finding new jobs. Especially in finding new jobs that pay as well as the ones they are losing.

May your futures all be bright!

(1) The hotel rooms were atrocious. Old; broken down furniture; stained carpets, curtains; overall dirty; showers hardly worked (often just a trickle from 20-year old shower heads) ...

(2) The casino is always empty/filled with old people. Terrible vibe ...
I have to disagree pretty strongly; I quite liked the Showboat, and will be sad to see it go.

I always found the rooms and the casino to be relatively clean. Not gleaming or totally consistent like Borgata, but at least the equal in this regard of anything on the boardwalk (except Caesar's, I guess), and certainly better than something like Bally's/Claridge, which always makes me feel embarrassed to be staying there.

The clientele is also nice. Yes, there are a lot of old people -- but that's not a bad thing. On the whole they're quiet, clean, and pleasant. Compare this to the Philadelphia-frat-boy/"Jersey Shore" rejects that swamp certain other venues (I'm looking at you, Trop). The other big group is middle-aged drunks, but at the Showboat they're almost always good-natured, as opposed to the nasty middle-aged drunks you tend to find at, say, the Taj.

The staff was competent. The buffet was well above average for AC. The games in the poker room were soft and non-threatening.

And it was cheap! Well into May weekday rooms would be running at $30/night. No one else was really close. RIP Showboat, you'll be missed.

ETA: As long as I'm here, would anyone in the know care to answer my questions about the room promotion at Bally's/Showboat/Harrah's in this post? Thanks.

If anyone bought the boat, there would be a covenant against gambling involved, as there was with the Hilton, and the Claridge when both were sold. There will be no more gambling at the Boat, that is for sure. CET will make sure of that.

Any going out of business promos? free play, food, free penny slot machine if it fits in your car?

Anyone think collecting a few extra chips would be worth the investment?

they won't be, but i plan on hitting it this or next week and buying $20 worth of singles, just to have. il use em in home games or something. gonna do the same at Revel.

Was really hoping the Hard Rock rumors were true since they have the HOB venue, but i guess that was nothing?

went down the other day. what a shame this is for the boardwalk. that's a nice stretch right there with the pier and rides and everything. So you now have abandoned Revel and Showboat taking up a huge chunk at the end, and then the dump that is Taj. that's the end of that. good thing they fixed it all up after Sandy...

The Showboat as we know it is closing in about 120 hours. Any one getting any souvenirs? The Regs will be there to the bitter end on Sunday at 4 PM.

Can understand why they are closing and why service was lackluster in the quarter prior to the announcement. They were reducing their workforce already. They also held less cash on hand. They also started to decrease assets.

Since it is not a bankruptcy, Caesars will be able to transfer liquor, food ingredients, bedding, furniture and fixtures, etc. to its other AC properties and beyond. Who knows? Stuff may already have ended up at the new Horseshoe in Baltimore that opens today.

Will miss the Showboat. It was my first free room ever. The poker room, with the ocean vistas, was also one of my favs for 1/2, and the $65 tourneys were also nice.

I've stayed in both towers several times; the layout of the property was simple and fun. Goodbye and good luck to all.

Could it be? Could there be an Eleventh Hour Savior for the Showboat?

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/...272748451.html

Giving the employees false hope? Caesars' spokesperson dropped this news. Why do this if it isn't serious possibility?
