It was a Friday night and this guy on my left had his girlfriend basically sitting in my space railing him. Most people would probably object and the lady be removed but I figured I'd avoid the conflict and just let it go. Anyway the board runs out Axxxx. I was in the 8 seat and my opponent was in the 3. I was pretty confident I had the winning hand and since I'm a humane person I wanted to reveal my cards to the player all the way across the table as fast as I could to let him know how strong my hand was. This gesture along with my lack of space caused me to awkwardly toss my cards face up into the middle. The King laded perfectly on its back in the middle of the table, while the ace, a light piece of plastic, floated off the edge of the table between the 9 seat and the dealer like a feather. The dealer looked at me like he had just watched my kids die and said "there's no way I can give you the pot now" and I immediately realized what had happened. Despite all my pleas the floor came over and ruled that indeed despite the Ax being logically my card and visible for all to see, my hand was dead and the other guys queens were awarded the pot. I can't begin to truly explain how bad that feeling feels. Knowing that because of a little gust of wind and physics and me trying to be a nice guy costs me a sizeable amount of money when just a hint of common sense could be used to right such a wrong. I heard another horror story of this happening to a rec player in a sizeable pot. Its awful for the game, it's borderline criminal, and the rule needs to be adjusted immediately. I protested this to Dave but to no avail. I urge all of you who play cash at Sands to reconsider. I would be shocked if at other casino's this same rule existed where judgement and common sense can't be applied on such an outdated rule. /rant.
The rule is if any card hits the floor, your hand is dead. It's pretty cut and dry. I know this to be the case at not only the Sands but many other rooms.
Also, it's not too easy for a card to accidentally fall off the table. Just table your cards in front of you, there's no need to throw them across the table.
I was in a 5/10 game in the last table by the bar about a year ago when the pot was about 7K and one of the all-in players was so excited that he won the pot, he slammed his hand down on the table and one card bounced off. While they were waiting for the floor and he was still celebrating, I knew they were gonna kill his hand (and so did the dealer). He got so mad that security had to come and physically escort him out of the room.
