Hello all.

Wondering about the no limit rake at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa. Does anyone know what it is? And what are the various limits being played?

Thanks

I believe it is $4 max rake for the NL games.............and players earn $1 in comp per hour.

Terriffic track, casino, and cardroom.

Love it there!

Yeah, i think it's 10%, 4 max, $1 BBJ drop.

It's 1/2 NL and 3/6 LHE. Maybe an O/8 or HO game. Some random mixed games but they don't run regularly (usually 1 running but it would be anything). PL Holdem/Omaha, I've seen stud running twice like a year ago. I wouldn't show up expecting anything other than 1/2 and 3/6 though, or you'll likely be disappointed.

If you show up at the right time you find a 5/5 PLHE game or a 15/30 LHE, Omaha, O/8 game.

tournaments on sunday afternoon, tuesday mornings, and thursday evenings.

I'm moving to Des Moines in about a month. Is this the closest/only casino in the area? I've never gotten into horse-racing although I lived in Saratoga Springs for a while so you'd think I would have. However, a new vice may be just what I need. How are the 1/2 games there as far as skill level? I've played that limit in Vegas before and done alright...I seem to lose in any online NL game I sit in. I would expect the skill level would probably be a bit higher than Vegas since there aren't higher games and there's more of a local crowd?

There are lots of casinos and cardrooms in Iowa.

The Tama indian reservartion is about 60 miles from Praire Meadows and has a terriffic room.

In Council Bluffs(Omaha) you have the WSOP circuit events.

Iowa is a very nice area for poker and I think you will enjoy it. The people in Iowa are as friendly as you will find anywhere in the country.

Don't miss the Iowa State Fair in August located on the outskirts of Des Moines(and less than 10 miles from Praire Meadows). It is regarded as the countrys top state fair.

The games do have a high number of "regulars" during the week, if you want random people donking off chips the weekend is better. The regulars are really nothing special though. Best times are late late fall, after the farmers have gotten their payment on crops.

Tama is probably better action, lots of college kids 18-20 who can't play at Prairie Meadows. Last time I was there the min buyin was like $20 or $40 or something like that. Buyin at PM is 100-300.

If you're more into limit a lot of locals go to Minnesota and go to Canterbury Card Club...wider range of limit poker there.

Haha everyone keeps telling me about this state fair. I keep thinking "wth would I want to go to a state fair for?" but I guess I'll have to check it out after all the good recommendations.

I prefer limit over NL lately but will play pretty much anything. I expect there probably are no stud games in the area?

Pork on a stick! ldo

I played at Prairie Meadows once a few years back and thought it was quite nice. I'll be back in Altoona, right at that exit actually, for a meeting next month and look forward to playing there again.

I'm thinking about driving up there on the weekends for a poker road trip. Is this rake standard or any better/worse than Harrahs?

IIRC, rake was 10% to $5 as of Sep 2015 which was the last time I played there. Their phone number is 515-967-1000.

Games have changed quite a bit. The poker room has moved downstairs next to the pit which has increased action ten fold. They spread 1/2 daily. 2/5 frequently. And even have a 5/5/10 game pretty regularly. Limit is rarely seen unless the bad beat gets high, then some 3/6 limit will begin to spread. Great room, good action. Rake is now 5+1. but it is worth it!

They get a 5-10 pot limit Omaha going most Thurday evenings and either a normal 5-10 friday and sat night. game changes sometimes 2-5 with a straddle split rounds of holdem and pot limit havnt seen 5-10 HOE in a while. poker room use to close during the week at 4 am now is open when ever a game will play. comps blow as u get only 50 cents an hour and can only be used for food/bev. Nice locals, good dealers, rakes normal, only place to play poker within an hour of Des Moines so if its happening its there.

The games can be quite good there, but I have to disclose this is a casino where I have had no success. From the front door, IIRC, you go up one escalator and it is on your left.

What time does 1/2 generally start weekdays?

Last time i was through, games started around 11 am to noon on weekdays.

Events such as racing made poker start earlier.

Nice poker room with professional dealers.

Played a short session while passing through town a few days ago. It was a fine enough room. Good dealers. Players seemed pretty aggressive, but it was late on a weeknight, so probably all regs.
