Made my first showing at Mohegan Sun Pocono last night. Was hanging out with friends at the Poconos for a weekend and decided to stop by and check out the room on the way back. Here are some comments.

The Good
1) Floor seemed competent
2) The tournament was run very smoothly with the floor handling rebuys, increasing blind levels and balancing tables in a prompt fashion
3) Poker cage cashed a slot voucher for me, something I very rarely see a poker cage do (after playing in more than a dozen casinos)
The Bad
1) One of the dealers in the nightly tournament was goofing off and slowing down the action. He would look at the dead stack's cards while dealing and then comment on how that player would do every single hand. Also in the case of all-ins he would deal out the board WSOP-style (i.e., very slowly). Dude, its not the World Series, its a nightly $55 with 12-minute levels.
2) The action in 1 2 NL cash games has been pretty bad compared to places I frequent. There was no 2 5 NL games running while I was there (7pm to 1am on Sunday night).
The Ugly
1) This seems to be the only casino on the East Coast that still rakes preflop. For example if you are playing 2 5 and Villain opens for $20 and you 3-bet him to $65 and villain folds - the casino will take a $4+$1 rake. Pretty ridiculous.

Does this room still do a once a month $500 tourney? Or something like that ? (Maybe I have that wrong)

Is there a way to get free/discounted rooms from playing a certain number of hours? Is there any card matching with other casinos?

I agree with AAlegend, this room is bad, it has a bad location, dealers are good but are two friendly and talk way too much, like all the locals where their friends in a bar. Just deal the game without all the chit chat, it is not your job. Most of the floor is ok,Jason the new manager is very good but only so much he could do. The room has been open for a long time now, and i think it will continue to go downhill,if they dont become a more professional run room.

I kind of like the fun atmosphere. I want people to feel like they are there to have fun.

If the dealer chatting makes a fish stay for an extra hour I don't care if it costs me 2 hands in that hour.

Dead money wants to come and have a good time. And a bunch of these guys that started off as causal players come more and gamble more because they treat it like it is their corner bar.

I thought I'd throw this out to any 2p2ers in the Wilkes Barre area. I need a substitute for my Wed night league at Twin Oaks. I'll cover greens fees and a 6 pack. Ship me a PM if anyone wants to go. Hackers welcome.

the $20 bet was called when the raise came in
thereby making the pot $47 full rake + jackpot drop rake taken at 99% of casinos in this instance

That is wrong snowman. I do not know where you play at, but no AC Casinos, no Las Vegas Casinos and no Philadelphia casinos rake preflop.

Recently revisited and was HORRIFIED. Here are my thoughts as a winning cash game player with 1000s of live hrs (I don't post here ever) I post this only to possibly help the local MS poker community as I have friends, who don't, but would like to make it their home casino WHEN the room improves. Not just here simply to complain.

I stopped while traveling past to answer questions brought from those mentioned friends who are regs. They say the games are "bad", management "gross" and typically only $1/2 so they drive past to other casinos.
-Only 3 $300 cap tables going. Blond woman running board and the cage staff appeared polite, competent and professional.
-The room itself is nice. Table itself was clean as were the chairs, restrooms etc
-Wait staff was friendly and timely
-Dealers had visible tattoos, jewelry and unbuttoned shirts. For me that's super unprofessional for a casino.
-Dealers didn't seem to talk anymore than Foxwoods, Turning Stone ,MS etc. Particularly with a table full of recognizable faces as suggested in previous post.
-The game was really bad. I've been here in the past several times and it didn't seem as bad then. Everyone appeared to be loosing regs maybe one slight breakeven. Nothing creative. Example: I took middle pair for 3 streets OOP and the table gasped when villain mucked.
-Floor? I was a bit surprised to see Jason as the floor from CT. Later to find out he's the manager?
-When the floor was called for a minor issue Jason came to the table and before a word by the dealer or players he began degrading the players involved speaking to them as if they were 5 yr old kids. Using phrases like "shut up" "I don't care what you have to say" "its over" "say anything else and I'll kick you out"
at no time did any PLAYER become loud, aggressive or even out of line.
Jason was over the top combative. I don't believe any player involved deserved 10% of his reaction to the situation. His level of action was extremely disproportionate to the situation on hand. Frankly don't care if he was "having a bad day" it was uncalled for.

More to my point. I am HORRIFIED to learn from my friends, that WERE regs, this was not an isolated occurrence. The room is nice and it should be a friendly place for players to enjoy themselves. If you see something of the sort please let the casino management know so they can improve the situation.

With all of that said it is possible that he recognized me from his previous job where I was possibly a PIA player once or twice. Honestly don't recall anything or even speaking with him once. Even so.

er.......welcome to Wilkes-Barre, PA. We play poker in a hole in the ground under an abandoned grandstand.

Which is why, with the above accurate rant, and the room location, etc., that when I hit MS-Pocono, I use the hotel, the food services, and the harness racing. Period. Poker is awful. No walkby traffic. Isolation. all locals. too much fraternization. Sketchy dealers. inconsistent lead staff. blah blah. you get the picture, and nothing ever changes.
I'd have loved to see "Undercover Boss" visit the poker room when the Chief did that episode. But, am thinking its the "don't see it, don't hear about it" management school.

So what ever happened to the theory about poker going back on the casino floor, near the buffet?

I can assure you "having a bad day" was not the reason. That's standard.

Last year it took me three visits to be paid for a high hand I had won a few days earlier because the first two times they didn't have enough staff to go to the upstairs cage and get the money and "he was busy".

On the second visit I sat and played and told him "I'll be at table 7". 3 hours later he sauntered by and I said "still busy???" He goes "yep" very inconsiderately and I left that night without my money. I got the complaint to casino management. It went nowhere and the attitude didn't improve.

That seems to be the attitude of the whole floor staff at this point. While none of it has been directed towards me, I've noticed that it is often a poor response. It always seems like it is a major problem for them to do their job, requiring some sort of snarky comment.

Though I'm there very infrequently anymore, there are still one or two good floors that were there last time I was in. The majority of the floor staff will bend over backwards for their favorite regs, and that's it.

Is this the same Jason who was arrested a couple years back at the casino on illegal bookmaking charges?

Recently started taking $2 promo dollars at $40, bad beat near 100k, doing hourly high hands 5 days a week for $100. Run it twice available at 5/5 NL and 5/5 PLO. Big NL is dead only occasionally on saturday. 5/5 PLO goes several nights a week. New poker room manager who listens to player requests and gets things done in a timely fashion. Daily tournaments have been slow. Tournament series twice a year gets a good turn out though, main event $550 had 140+ players last time.

I take back what I say about the new poker room manager. Does not listen to player requests, is condescending, knows nothing about how a poker room is run. No phones on the rail now, even when not in a hand. Promotions have been ****ty, no reduced rake even for heads up (lol). Mold growing in poker room, they have it quarantined off but room is still open, will be moving upstairs in February supposedly, which might help but I have no hope for the room as management is clueless. Jason's higher up thought he could take over his job so canned Jason and the room is in the lowest state I've ever seen it. No 2/5 NL ever and no attempt to ever get it going.
