Re: Hollywood Casino @ Charles Town, WV Poker Thread

Honestly, anybody who expects that CT will have its regular tournaments go longer than 6 hours is probably gonna be disappointed. That said, it would be fairly easy to change the structure a little bit to delay the point at which it becomes a shove fest. Add two early levels (75/150 and 150/300) to make 200/400 the 6th level - that would get a lot of people two hours of play so that more people make it to the first break. Admittedly, it will become a shove fest after the first break, but in a six hour tournament you're gonna get that at some point.

A B&M casino has actual overhead and a limited number of tables - it is completely different from an online casino where the marginal cost of one more table is nearly zero. Running a deep stacked event on a regular basis may be great for the players, but the house isn't gonna make enough money to keep it going. Some huge rooms (Borgata for instance) can run a daily tournament that is expected to run 12 hours. But a 30 table room just can't afford to have tournaments that long.

As players, we want CT (or wherever you play) to make money. The house making a profit is a good thing - it means there will continue to be a place for us to play.

I pretty much agree with your position on the tourneys, Didace, but I don't think that means that management can't be persuaded to run some MTTs with longer structures. However, I do think it will be difficult—if not impossible—to get them to run those longer structures with buy-ins at their current levels. I'd expect a buy-in of $500+ for a longer structure.

PLO8 limit ran a few times, but there weren't enough players to compete with the demand for more NL tables. They also tried to run a 1-2 PLO game and not enough showed up to keep it going. Unless players actually show up, Omaha will die altogether at Charles Town.

Roughly 10 on 1-2 and 2-5 waiting list.

Within first 30 minutes 30+ had signed up for evening tourney. By 6 pm only 60+ had signed up. There was the initial surge then quiet for a while. At the end of the night the total # of entrees was 95 (not a sell out).

Of note, the alternates take open seats through level 2, if there are any.

Prize Pool : ~$19,000
1st ~7300
2nd ~4100
3rd ~2300
4th -9th Can't recall.

The tournament was down to 3 players at 12:30 am so I imagine it was over around 1 am after 6 hours of play. By the 5th level it was down to 70+, by the end of the 7th level it was down to 35+, not sure after that.

I did play just to see how things went. TAG AND POSITION is definitely the way to go. Get in low, hit the flop and jam. In the end, it was fun but luck did play a major factor. I DO like the speed....even though other casino tournaments have better structures for the skilled player, grinding for 12 hours is hard to do. IMO: I would like to see daily tournaments structured to last around 8-9 hours long.

My suggestions for improvements:

1) Have the sign up line start at the cage and go back towards the bathrooms; this way folks trying to get chips or cash out aren't mixed in with the registration. At 3 pm the initial 30 got in line to sign up and there were a few frustrated folks that were trying to get/cash chips.

Then to lengthen the tournament to 8-9 hours by either:

2) Add 4 levels with 25, 50 antes and add another 100 and 200 ante level. The speed went WAY up at the 5th -8th levels...it was almost manic. To prove my point between the 5th and 6th level dead money went from 900 (300/600) to 2200 (100/400/800) The earlier levels were manageable.

OR

3) Increase the levels to 30 minutes. But I prefer suggestion #2 above. Doubt I will participate in the tournament again at its current structure, but it was entertaining. Definitely created buzz in the room. You can have great success if you hit a heater in the 5th -8th levels.

4) Oh yeah, I would like to see SnGs started that pay top 3. This tournament was a lot like a SnG, except short handed play doesn't become a factor until later, which makes it more difficult to play.

@ 10 pm the wait list was

12, 1-2 NLH (8 on list)
5, 2-5 (20 on list)
1, 5-10 (7 on list)
10-20 PLO interest list was about.

I left at 12:30 am after the CAPS nailed it! The tables were starting to break pretty quickly. The action makes CT so worth it, even though it really isn't a "spa" poker room (the kind that really caters to its patrons). Saw a lot of soft play, yet again.
I think you've done a good job of capturing what the tournament was like last night. I finished 2nd (sick brag post ITT) and we finished about 12:45. Heads-up play only lasted about 10 hands.

Play was a little all over the place with some decent tournament players who understood shoving/calling ranges all the way down to people that didn't know what antes were. It was interesting to see that when the blinds/antes were high people were folding out of the big blind with half their stack in already in as the big blind. Or you'd have a short-stack berating someone for calling their shove with K-10 out of the big blind when getting almost 4-1 on their money and outdrawing the short stacks JJ. All told it was a fun time (easier to say when doing well), the house ran things well for it only being their 2nd tournament, and most of the players seemed to be having a good time.

I dont believe that plo 8 has run yet I have seen limit o8 run but not pot limit. i think the limit was 5/10. I do agree we need to get more omaha players to come and try to get the 1/2 plo off the ground. the 5/5 plays really big for most players. so get there early and request an interest list be started for 1/2 plo.

Nice brag.

So did no one suggest a chop when you got to the last few players? Every one of these I've done pretty much ended in a chop when it got down to 5 or fewer players.

Re: Hollywood Casino @ Charles Town, WV Poker Thread

Just got back from Charlestown, games were decent, floor and staff were awful. I went to the bathroom and when I returned I am 100% certain there was a $100 chip missing from my stack. I called the floor over and they told me they would "review the tapes". 3 hours later a floorman came up to me and told me that the tapes showed no evidence of anyone reaching into my stack. I then asked if they could tell me where the black chip went and the reply was "you never had a black chip" which leads me to believe that they never even reviewed the tapes as I am completely sure and multiple players at my table agreed that my stack was missing a chip. I asked to speak to the head of surveillance and this request was denied. The floorman was really rude about everything and told me to lower my voice. My game was really juicy and the black chip seemed like a lost cause so I just chalked this one up as a learning experience. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up to be on your toes while at and away from the table at The Chuck.

When we got to the 9-handed final table a few guys started asking about a chop. Me and the guy that ended up winning said no. It seemed they were interested in an even 9-way chop and I had about 1/3 of the chips in play and wasn't interested. I said we could talk about it when we got to 3-4 handed but it never really came up again. The floor was also adamant that they wouldn't facilitate a chop. The other issue is whoever signed for first place was going to get a W2G (greater than $5K) which complicates things further. I've chopped a few bigger tournaments than this at the Borgata in the last couple of years and always ended up regretting my decision as well so I was content to play it out.

Did you leave it on the bottom of your stack? I would have a really hard time believing someone was able to take it if you did.

No... I hadn't played live in so long I didn't even think about it. I realize it is my own fault for not properly securing it but still wanted to give people a heads up. It was separate from the other chips I thought I was doing a courtesy to other players. I can be a naive idiot at times.

Did you feel the dealers were awful, and if so, please elaborate.

Personally, I am always diligent to protect my hand and chip stack no matter where I play. When I leave the table for any period of time, I take my black chips (and higher, if applicable ) with me and just let the dealer know what I'm doing.

Ah yea its good to leave it out when you're playing so people can see, but definitely protect it when you get up. Bummer tho, that would tilt me big time

The 1-2 PLO ran on Sundays a couple of times, but then fewer people showed up. It needs to be a consistent day and time at least to start for players to know when to show up or you won't get a table. Sunday early seemed to work, as they had the tables to be able to try. Friday and Saturday they won't want to put it on the board, and during the week will be harder to get players.

I normally play Sunday evenings NL, but would support a 1-2 PLO game if it was on the board. The room needs some game variety and this would help. If a 1-2 game could run consistently, it would also be able to feed players to the 5-5 game as they got more comfortable.

Dealers were actually pretty decent and quite friendly, they made a few mistakes here and there but they are only human. However I was not pleased with the way I was treated by the floor staff. I understand that I made a mistake but would just appreciate being treated with respect, as I alway make sure to respect everyone in the poker room.

I'm sure this has been discussed, but is there wifi in this room? Do they allow ipods/ipads? I like to stream audio from online when playing. I don't remember from the last time I was there. Thanks.
