5-6 players at the table knew each other as they were there on a golf weekend - I would imagine this is a common occurrence.

At one point, each table was 6-handed. Making one table a must-move wold have helped a lot.

Rake was 10% up to $5 a hand.

Dealer said that they used to run tournaments but stopped for some reason, but that they may be starting them up again at some point.
last year they had a $300 tourney with a 10k guarantee. Your buy in included a room as well. We wanted to go down but had other plans that weekend. I have been waiting for them to do the same again but like you said it seems like they dont have tourneys any more

You couldn't have chosen a better neighborhood, imo. Also, when did their clinic start treating substance abuse?

That's not the greenbrier near me. I don't live in WV.

Re: Greenbrier (West Virginia)

Mostly confirming brianr's details above, but here was my experience.

$2/$5 NLHE, $100 min, $500 max.

Game does start at 8pm, sounded like only Fridays and Saturdays. You're supposed to join a waiting list through the Player's Club beforehand if you want to play, though there were walkups coming in if seats opened up. If you're going with a group, I would call in advance and let them know so they'll be prepared to open a second table, get a game going during the week, etc.

We started with 18 on the list Friday, though several backed out. But there was never talk of opening a second table. (There were only two physical poker tables).

Dealers were fine, maybe below average by Vegas standards but definitely competent. They all deal blackjack and other table games as well, which makes sense. I don't know who the floorman was or what would have happened if there was a dispute, but the game was pretty friendly so nothing came up.

I'd guess half the players were locals that owned property affiliated with the Greenbrier, or members of golf/tennis type stuff. They weren't awful, but typical loose passive old guys. Generally nice guys.

The table never got too deep, most people were buying in for $100 or $200 at a time and several would take one shot for $100 and get up and leave. 10% rake up to $5. The game broke around midnight on Friday, 2am on Saturday. They said sometimes it goes late, but I think the casino closes at 4am.

A friend of a friend went up 2 months ago and won $47,000. It sounds like there must have been a big game organized in advance, not sure how he got in it but they said he goes to Greenbrier a lot to play.

They are having a tournament March 16-17. 120 seats max, $250 buy-in (and your room rate is $99/night). For more information, visit greenbrier.com/poker (I'm getting a page not found)

The felt had two big red "Greenbrier" logos in the 3 and 8 seats just inside the betting circle, which was pretty stupid for a red chip game. People would limp in and the dealer wouldn't see the bet out there. They also have automatical shufflers but the dealer said they got covered up when they put in new felt overtop without leaving an opening? So clearly poker isn't a top priority there.

If I were running the place, I'd change the default to a $1/$2 or $1/$3 game. That's basically what the stack sizes played anyway, and a lot of people walked up from table games but weren't going to sit at $2/$5. And you can always try to get $2/$5 at the second table.

Unrelated to poker, but the level of service was pretty dissapointing overall at the Greenbrier. I went before the casino opened, and I've also stayed at the Homestead, and you really come to expect over the top good service and hospitality from A to Z. I just didn't see it on this trip. A lot of the bartenders and waitresses seemed annoyed to be there.

My guess is that the new owner wanted a lot of jobs to go to locals since he's from WVa, but you don't learn top class hospitality from the Biscuit World. Also possible the resort isn't turning a profit and they are trying to run on thin crews.

I did have a good meal and service at the steakhouse, Prime 44. Great lobster mashed potatoes and mac and cheese.

Conclusion, there does seem to be a regular poker game on weekends starting at 8pm and it makes the trip more enticing for me (along with some great golf courses), but I wasn't overly impressed with the resort on the whole.

Nice concise TR. Sorely disappointed to hear about the level of service. Far cry from my past experiences.

Thank you for the TR, I have wanted to go for some time now. I yelled at my wife because I want to go for that tourney and stay but she said I am not allowed. Our first child is due on march 15th.

How are the table games? how many? what is the min bet on them?

Their literature claims:
Quote:
35 table games including roulette, blackjack, baccarat, craps, and three-card poker, as well as 320 slot machines.
There was a pretty big high roller room, so I would guess 10-12 tables in there. On the main floor, definitely two craps tables, and I'd guess eight blackjack. At least one table for Roulette and Three Card Poker. This doesn't add up close to 35 so I'm probably undercounting.

Minimum was $15 Friday and Saturday night, maybe lower during the day?

Also some strange hours:
Quote:
Slots 11pm - 4am
Craps 4pm - 4am
Table Games 11pm - 4am
Poker 8pm
I'm almost positive that is a typo in their literature, as people were definitely playing blackjack at noon on Saturday, and a few sentences before that says the casino is "Open from 11:00am until 4:00am."

So my guess is the schedule is this, (at least on Saturdays):
Quote:
Slots 11pm - 4am
Craps 4pm - 4am
Table Games 11am - 4am
Poker 8pm
Didn't play blackjack but I do know it was a 6 to 8 deck shoe, no surrender, double on any two, no hitting split Aces.

Re: Greenbrier (West Virginia)

Next tourney 3/16 - 17, 120 players max, $250 entry gets you $99 room rate, supposedlythe structure isn't great, with 10k in chips, and blinds that start at 100/200 and double every 20 mins.

Haven't been here in about a year. How is this room going? I remember it only opens after 8 and the dealer kind of keeps a hand written list.

Re: Greenbrier (West Virginia)

How much do they enforce the dress code? It looks like jacket required after 7pm. I have the opportunity to go up there again. The last time I was there it was before the casino opened. I live in Las Vegas so the thought of wearing a suit to play poker seems silly.

Definitely enforced, there's a guy at the entrance that is carding, making sure you're a hotel guest or sporting club member, and making sure you meet the dress code.

You don't have to wear a "suit" though. Khakis, button down shirt, and a sports coat are fine. No tie needed.
