I played at the golden nugget over the weekend and it looks like it could be a good poker room provided they get a cage, shuffling machines and a way to remove the smoke smell from the close smoking area.

I had an interesting conversation with the shift manager regarding rules after one player was taking $100 stacks of reds to put on black or red on roulette near us. It really did not matter since he had 3 times the amount we had and there was no buy-in cap. But another person argued that if there is no cap then he should be able to take whatever he wanted off. So apparently he needed an Atlantic City poker rule book. According to the floor manager, each casino can ask for variants of existing rules from the casino commision or whoever governs them in the intern of establishing a new one. The floor manager stated that there is no official rule book and he is the end all be all for the rules. Even if he had a rule book, he would not let me see it without an exception from the commision. I received a response from the casino commision with a link to table game rules but not poker.

Basically my question is if every room can have different rules, how do you know the rules other than asking a lot of rules questions from the floorman?

I stopped by the room today. Gotta say it looks really nice. They had a food spread which was a nice touch. It has the potential to be a good room since they bill it as a "luxury poker room" and looks-wise it kinda fits the bill. It's just a matter of getting players to migrate over.

Interesting, how many tables do they have? All 1-2? No cage? How are the tables? Chairs? Felt? Etc.

I heard 1/2nl is 100 min, no max and 2/5nl is 200 min, no max. True? Anyone know if 5/10nl or higher has been going?

I imagine the the nugget will have mostly 1/2NL with their no max policy on all NL games. It'll probably be the sickest 1/2 games in the city though, some people sitting down with 250BB stacks and the occasional 500BB+ player looking to run over the game. I look forward to stopping by when I'm in town in a few weeks. It would be great if any posters who play there could report back what was running and how the no max changes the dynamics of 1/2 there.

Not taking significant amounts of money of a poker table is pretty standard. Not a good sign to see the floor not up on basic rules.

FWIW twice - once at PA Sands and once at AC Bally's - I have asked to see the rule book. Both times they were promptly given to me. I would never play at a room where I know that no rule book exists.

I've played a bunch of times in the Las Vegas GN room and most players sit with like $200. It's really not that crazy at all. I'll buy in enough to cover the largest stacks, unless it's the Duke.

However, AC players may be different. I think with the great tournament structures they're promising we'll see more experienced players and the games will play deeper.

So I visited the Golden Nugget poker on Xmas Eve and was playing the 1/2 game they has going. Eventually there was a 2/4 limit game they started as well. The management there said the room was in soft opening phase and the promos would start after the new year. The 1/2 game was pretty tight, almost like everyone was just feeling out the table, the room etc.

The room itself is one of the nicest I have ever been. Very comfortable, and I think there are 20 tables. In other rooms I have been, I have seen 40 tables in this much space. They had a fresh food platter (replaced every hour). I was told they will have this for at least the first month. I got a kick out of some woman venturing in from the casino floor, loading up on salami, and running back out. The funny thing was she ran back to the blackjack table my wife was at. She was telling every one at the bj table about it like she made a big score! lol

My only complaint is that the room is at the waaaaay back of the casino, but this would never stop me from going. I hope the GN does well. So far the interior redesign is sharp (still in construction mode).

do they give you bottles of whatever like borgata or just have the 1 watery beer on tap like taj/trop?

That was my first thought, but you never know for sure. I can't imagine they were permitted to open a poker room without a rule book in place and required to be available. Whatever the truth is, what matters to me is that players aren't able to see a rule book and that is a recipe for trouble and unacceptable to me.

Why open a "luxury poker room" with no auto shuffle machines?

Really they're no shufflers? I'd imagine this has to just be temporary before they actually install them into the tables.

on a Saturday, if you get 120 runners for a tourney, that only leave 8 tables for cash games for a while

Agreed, but a $68 plus $12 seems like a good value and the structure also looks good. I'm interested in how many they get for their inaugural event. I may come up Weds or Thursday if they have 40 plus in the tournament on Tuesday.

I will be playing at GN this weekend and will report back. Unfortunately it looks I'll miss the tournaments though. Maybe I'll go back in a couple of weeks for that.

Fresh food platter = a tray of sandwich wraps, small sandwiches, cheeses, some meats, some fruit (I think). Nothing super fancy but a nice touch.

As far as auto-shufflers, per a floorperson, they are due to arrive in a few weeks for about half the tables in the room.
