Room will not close as long as Del Park itself stays open. I mean what else can they put there? It is not like there are not enough slots or table games compared to the number of visitors...
Overall, all the Delaware casinos are getting squeezed by the new competition in MD and PA, so the trims are taking place to right size the cost side against revenues. Remember the days when it was the hotspot for midAtlantic poker and both poker rooms were filled constantly? Now the other room by the slots is just dead space. Using it for special events like the tavern poker series and certainly the October series will instill some life there, but I'm surprised the DelPark high command hasn't converted that room back to slots for revenue generation. The overall business trend for both casino and poker play in that region will be stagnant - the weekly freerolls are a great incentive that sustains the room - and the special tournaments as well. The guts of the operation, the cash games, remain a commodity service that is easily replicated yet needs to be made differentiated with superior staffing, service, comps, food/drink etc. Phasing out the BBJs indicates that they are simplifying the operations and shifting to other sets of incentives. The player talk has been that BBJs draw in out of town players who, when they hit it, take the local regulars' money out and never to return. Incentives aimed at regulars help to sustain volume enough to keep things going. Poker is one of the most personnel intensive and complicated service in a casino - dealing with staffing, scheduling, training, monitoring - and doing that 24/7. So managing the cost side gives an indication on the economic forces that they are contending with and how they are making adjustments.
The DelPark weekly freerolls and the added slot dollars for hours are among the best incentives for regular play anywhere in the country - at least they are making a vigorous effort to compete in a region that is saturated with alternatives and more yet to come (MGM NatHarbor then Philly Live).
