A few factors make it tough to make a ton at these tables.
1. Rake is high. 10% up to $5. That alone is fairly standard but they take on the quarter (ie. a 23 pot gets 2.25 taken) so it adds up pretty fast.
2. Many fish/rec players are skeptical of the machines. Even the ones that aren't skeptical just flat out prefer "real" live poker.
3. It's the only public place in the area for people 18-20 to play which attracts some decent young players. It attracts some bad young players too but since they don't have as much money they stick to the lower buy in donkaments they have there.
4. Partly due to factors 2&3, there is just a higher ratio of winning/break even (mostly break even) players to losing players than your average 1/2nl live game. There are a few really good regs too (for example the guy everyone knows as Captain Zeebo plays in the game probably 5 days a week or more). And since there are no bigger games spread they are playing 1/2.
So at a 10 handed table, from my experience (about 500 hours), you are going to have yourself, probably 1 other decent reg, 2-3 break evenish players and 2-3 marginal losers, and maybe 1-2 fish. The rake just makes that game tough to beat for much. I played it all last summer and by my estimation its much tougher than your average 1/2nl game. Doesn't mean it can't be beat (I did, not by much but I did), just means its probably not the best choice if you have other options.
