Longtime online player, wanting to play a bit more live. What are the best times/days to play live? Are weeknights after 6 soft? Or better waiting for Friday, Saturday abs Sunday nights?

I've just moved to Melbourne and have never played here before. Can anyone give me an update on what the games are like at the moment?

Like BennyMacca and Ashley12 I'd just play 2/4 @ Crown. If nothing else, Alison is always a pleasant eye-candy distraction during the day.

I think 5/5 has a disproportionately high # of regs for almost no table selection & not mich higher buyin than 2/4.
Even if one's rolled & skilled for 5/5 they're prolly better off playing 2/4..

Im not actually from Melbourne and only really come over here for tournaments and the odd weekend of football and poker, but I always kind of laugh when as the night isn't at its peak, and the games are unlikely to get better or worse, that so many people continue to play a bad 5/5 game rather then a decent 2/4. But thats a limited sample size.

Obviously earlier in the night if there is a chance that the game will be fantastic you can stick out a 5/5 or 5/10 for a while in the hope the right guy drops in though.

most 5/5 regs have too much ego and dun wanna be seen playing 2/4 even though they know the 2/4 tables are better.
I dont know what you are talking about "earlier in the night". the time doesnt matter.. donks will sit any time of the day/night. Actually there would be more chance of donks sitting later into the early morning when you get guys blind drunk and/or chasing losses from pit games.

Crown's better regs have always been mostly too stupid to realise that the more comfortable they make the game for themselves (chatting/softplaying/favourable buyin structures/etc), the worse the games become as a result.

This killed the 5/10 & higher a few years ago, and will kill the 5/5 soon. You gotta make the game as friendly to the casual player as possible or else you end up with regs dominating the tables and the game dies.

Given that most of the people with cash to burn have jobs, generally a bad game has more chance of turning into a good one around 6pm then it does at 3am purely by weight of numbers entering the casino after work.

Heard a rumour that they were toying with the idea of re-introducing time charge (pay for the new bar area?) Anyone else heard this or is it just another one of those stories that never goes anywhere?

Thread bump: Just to add my 2c. The rake at crown is ridonkulous. I think at the 1/3NL its like 12 or 14$. Plus you pay 5$ to sit down.

Games seem very good though. 2/4NL game seems good, if not slightly tougher than the 1/3NL (not saying much)...

5/5 is a joke, they struggle to get one table up most days and most regs don't even want to sit down to get a game started. they all walk around the room talking about starting a game but don't wanna sit. everyone just signs up then spies on the empty table until people sit. do these idiots realise that if everyone thinks "Ill wait till someone sits" then nobody will sit.
I miss the 2/5 days...

wtf is with the abundance of new crown dealers the past month? most of the competent ones have moved "up" and have now been replaced by dealers who can't even read boards. Some of the experienced dealers are dealing just as bad and SLOW as the new ones.. Id really like to know what training is involved with these people. its clearly not enough. Also the whole overtime thing just makes things worse- dealers trying to concentrate in zomby mode when they prob couldn't do the job in a fresh state.

Yesterday had a [experienced] dealer bending every card up before pitching making ever card visible to the table. Are you fkn kidding me? was the weirdest thing I've seen in my ~5 years playing..

Also I have had multiple experiences at the cashier cage where the staff have miscounted cash or chips. CHECK YOUR EXCHANGES with these idiots. some of them are half asleep or likely can't even count to 10. Are they not allowed calculators??

Off topic, but I notice browsing through the PokerNetwork site, their Supermoderator has abandoned ship. Talk of expanding next year (which is odd as there are probably only a dozen or so posters frequenting the site) - only points to one thing - they must be getting ready to fold. (IMO, but that's they way it usually works with such odd logic)

The only ones left in the Poker AsiaPacific forum seem to be a couple of pseudo- (poker) journalists - only a matter of time before this one dies off too, IMO.

The only ones fit enough to survive have to be global; and I would think 2+2 would be the strongest and most populated, and may well be the only one left in 5 years time.

A lot of new faces, new accents around the Crown poker room at the moment. Seems like quite a few this year are having an extended holiday to chase Aussie Millions glory and take in the Australian Open tennis.

The 40 c plus temperatures every day are making it a challenge. (esp. for a pale skinned Swedish young man I was talking to yesterday).

Do you think we would have enough interest to get a mini 2p2 meetup going?

Alternatively, if any like-minded poker players fancy meeting up and donking around in some 1-2,1-3NL etc let me know.

Probably, though if you are doing the meet-up with mainly the travelling players, perhaps relaying the information to the MTTc thread would be the best option, which is here

I just spent two weeks in Melbourne - with quite a bit of poker thrown in with the tennis and drinking.

I ended up leaving before Aussie Millions actually started, and I assume the action picks up a lot over that time, but I was pretty disappointed with how hard it was to get a PLO game going at any point. Far less action than any random night in Star, Sydney.

But anyway, had an awesome time overall and probably met some of you without actually exchanging 2+2 names or whatever.

Cheers Melbourne.
