Thanks for the tip! I got my pass after playing this weekend.
Arrived about 7pm on Sunday. They had 2 20/40 hold'em tables and 6 20/40 Omaha high tables. I sat right down and played in a very loose passive 10/20 hold'em. The list for 20/40 hold'em moved very quickly and I got a seat in under half an hour despite being 6 down. I was about 8 down on Omaha, but ended up waiting another hour and a half to get a seat. As someone else mentioned, people in the tournament were promoted to the top of the list which made the list move very slowly. They also seemed to wait until there were 3 seats open and would call 3 players at a time. By the time I was near the top, there were a good 20 names on the list. I asked another player if they would open a new table, but he said 6 Omahas is the max. There was also a decent list for 50/100 hold'em, but the floor seemed skeptical to even call it down.
The hold'em game was very good. I recognized a few players from Port Perry, Brantford and WSOP. Throughout the night, I would say I recognized about 30% of the players, but this was only my second time playing the CNE and I've played Port Perry and Brantford sporadically over the past couple of years.
The Omaha game was good. I wouldn't say I was on a great table, more loose, passive preflop with people who were willing to drop out after the flop once their hand was defined. I prefer a game with more pot odds post flop, but still very beatable throughout the night. There were definitely looser tables and I did have the opportunity to table change but didn't take it. By the time I asked again, the floor supervising the Omaha games was inept and didn't control players moving from table to table. The next floor controlled the movement, but was strict in enforcing the rule about no table changes with no list, so I got stuck.
Throughout the night, two of the tables broke up around the 3-4am timeframe, which allowed a nice influx of new players. I stayed until 5:30am and there were still 4 tables of 20/40 Omaha and 1 of 20/40 going strong.
Overall the experience was positive, although some of the dealers are crazy slow. Combine that with lack of autoshufflers and players who are more interested in walking around chatting but insist on being dealt in and the game screeched to asnails pace for some downs. I witnessed 3 showdowns where the dealer misread the hands at showdown and needed to be corrected, including one that almost got mucked on the 20/40 hold'em. So stay vigilant of dealer errors. I was pleasantly surprised that most dealers were on the ball about moving to $5 rake when we were 5 or fewer handed.
I'm definitely gonna try to make the trip back here for Labor Day. I recall from last year that the action was superb the Sunday before the holiday.
