================================================

Mod note: The deadline for applications has already passed

================================================

Hey guys, this is Alex Wice, AWice on Stars. If you don't know me, I have played 180 player sngs on and off for a while and used to have diamond star on sharkscope for the highest winrate in those, as well as $60/45s before it. I also came 3rd in an EPT. I have a math background and I write computer programs to analyze and research important subgames in no limit holdem.

In preparation for my book (Modern No Limit), I am interested to teach poker. I have decided that I will teach one person for free how to win ~$100/hr+ playing mttsngs, a relatively simple game. This is completely free, (although I would appreciate a donation if I triple or quadruple your hourly and you are grateful), and I will show you all of my best strategies, including Minerva, my personal high powered tool for effective learning of MTTSNG strategies.

I remember with Team AWice that a lot of people were affected positively from what I had to say and teach. I later stopped this program because it didn't make sense financially - people would win a lot of money in the long run, and I would only see a fraction of it. So I decided this time, it might as well be free, since I want to pick someone most deserving. I also wanted to pick one person so I could focus in on them specifically. One of the reasons I am undertaking this project is so that I can be nice to others and make a difference in someone's life; and also to improve my skills in teaching, try to figure out what other people dont understand and how to best explain it, and force myself to stick to a schedule.

I will choose one person who applies in this thread. If you are chosen, you will start with a fairly long course over skype where I explain and make sure you understand everything [this will take a few days]; followed by you playing every day, and I give you my daily review for a while, and then every other day, and then every few days. During the review, you send all your HHs and I will review absolutely every single hand played by you and pick out hands for comment; this allows me to accurately guess your skill level and note your progress. I then can make suggestions about what you should study that day, and what you should think about when warming up the next day. My goal is to make you unstoppable at mttsngs as fast as possible; among the absolute best players playing them. I will be there every step of the way and as involved as possible with your development. I will also track your progress at these games starting from the second week to the eighth to see how you are doing. The goal at the end is for you to be making $4k a week consistently and within a reasonable schedule.

The person I choose should have the following qualities:
  • Eagerness/willingness to be a serious grinder with good work ethic
  • Has lots of free time to study the course and work every day
  • Has $2000 or more in their stars account so you can play, although this isnt a strict requirement [if you have $1k or so, we can work something out]
  • Ideally is a micro player or someone somewhat familiar with the game, but is breakeven or wins marginally.
  • Would be very helpful if the player has some tabling ability.. if you can play 20 tables that is a good number.
  • Is not an already established winner/grinder
  • Is comfortable with emotional/financial aspects of the game and is not excessively prone to tilt (hard to fix in a few weeks)
  • Respects me as a capable coach
  • Is okay with me publicly discussing your results as they unfold from week to week, and having your sharkscope unblocked

If you are interested and you match all these bullet points above, then in no more than a screen-length worth of text, answer the following questions:

0. Whats your pokerstars screenname, age, gender, job, country where you will play from?
1. Briefly describe your poker "story" or experience with progressing through the games - be sure to mention games played, roi, how many tables you usually/can play at once, and your honest assessment of your current hourly.
2. Why do you want to become a grinder? [Isn't grinding tables boring?] What motivates you to go to work? Be sure to mention what you would be doing without poker, and how specifically money would help your life personally. What do you feel limited you from being more successful?
3. Are you an analytical person or more of a feel player? How do you figure?
4. Do you feel like it is possible that with the right coaching and work ethic, you can be one of the best players at mttsngs? Be honest -- is this what you want? Do you think you have what it takes to learn it and do it? What do you hope to get out of this?

Before you apply, please remember that I am taking this very seriously, and so please make sure this intensive program is right for you. This is an intense course and not to be taken lightly. Grinding for 2 months is hard. Grinding for 2 months with daily learning is harder. I will be putting in a great deal of effort to teach you (spending time to teach you, spending time before sessions to prepare them, and spending time after sessions to analyze your play as thoroughly as possible). As such, I would appreciate only serious applications please. You only get out what you put in. As such, if you don't feel like you can handle working hard every day on this goal with me, please dont apply -- I dont want to find out 3 days later this isn't right for you etc.

Thanks for everyone's time, I will choose a couple people on Monday the 15th in the evening and PM them to setup a brief 20min interview, and then sometime later pick the winner and update in this thread. Let me be very clear: if you are chosen and do all the work/study each day, I guarantee you will have an hourly that is one of the highest among all of the regs.

this is an absurdly cool opportunity. anyone that can apply (and do it seriously), should.

Great opportunity. I would more kindly encourage negative comments to stay OOTT.

not applying because i'm too busy with real life stuff to play very much, but looking forward to the book! gl with this!

AWice, do you want applicants to post the application answers in the thread? or PM them to you?
08-12-2011 , 09:06 PM
can you please post the breakdown as to how someone who is in your own words a "disaster", can all of a sudden post a +$100/hr winrate just by receiving your special coaching?

you say 20 tables, so assuming that you would have someone playing 20 tables an hour with a winrate of $5/game (including rakeback). what kind of stakes have that sort of winrate + volume availability in a post-BF world?

not trying to hate, just don't see how you can legitimately claim someone will make $100/hr with little no experience and only 2k on a site.

could u unblock ur sharkscope
08-12-2011 , 09:55 PM
Nh sir. I'd love to apply but I think I'd fall under the heading of 'experienced grinder' even though my hourly is pretty low. I think there is probably people more deserving anyway. I think this could be a really interesting project, if done right you could bring more awareness to the positive side of poker. Hopefully you can give someone who is unemployed or unable to work a better chance at life. Gl OP and protege.

incredibly awesome... Hope the candidate truly appreciates this amazing opportunity.

~$100/hr+

Hey, just wanted to reply to some questions.

First off, I think it was cool but this OP was actually my 2600th post! Thanks everyone who has expressed interest via PM or other means (email, twitter, AIM, skype).

Yes you can PM me your application. Btw, one of the most ideal things I was looking for was to meet people that really wanted to be a poker player, but couldnt get poker to work in their life, and they were right on the cusp: poker had to work now in their life [for whatever reasons], or they would be cornered into a real ****ty job. Thats kind of what I am looking for.. part sob story, part determined individual.

No I will not unblock my sharkscope. If you want an idea of my 180 past, check my OPR. The reason is, one day after a MET (multientry sunday) where I lost a ton, I tilted hard at 1 and 2k hu sngs, losing 30k in an hour. I am disappointed with the look of the graph. You will just have to trust me (or ask others what they think and trust that) that I am a capable coach and that I am among one of the best at this format. Infact even now I am semi tilted because my sharkscope is a bit weak now because it includes a session where i sat out for 1 hour while 65 tabling due to a slow computer (stars crashed on me, the lobbies loading when you restart stars cause it to freeze and I had to wait until half my tables expired -- I bought more ram that day.)

Disaster was a euphemism. My ideal candidate is barely winning at microstakes but currently lacks the ability to win significantly at $15/180s and $22 mtts etc. Also 20 tabling is a starting point. I realize you are skeptical but to be honest if you are, then don't bother to apply. It's healthy to be skeptical but I think my name is well known and speaks for itself if you know a bit about who was playing those games at the time. As most of my play is centered around extensive computer analysis of ranges I feel my strategies are most ideal. I am donating over 300 hours of my time for free, and anyone who is a skeptic of what I can do is not going to give a full effort. Overall what I can promise is that you will play above the level of the best regs at that limit, and you will get very very personalized and intensive coaching for a long period of time.

Just to humor everyone and make sure any potential candidates are not feeling skeptical, this is my record at 180s. (In 2011 I havent played any online mtts basically due to non stop travelling.)

I urge anyone and everyone who thinks they have the remotest chance of becoming Alex's protege to APPLY OMG APPLY. Literally a once in a lifetime opportunity.

That being said, how lenient are points 4 and 6? I'm a marginally-to-reasonably winning 180 player (hidden brag(?)) and obviously I think I have the remotest chance . Crushing all the other points too btw, give me the goahead and I'll post my summarized life story!

None of the points are super strict, but if you win say > $40 an hour at poker I wouldnt apply.. but you can try.

To endo, my msn is alpha_wice@hotmail.com

Is it ok If I only have about $300 on stars? Can I find someone to stake me for this?

I feel that I fit all the other categories exceptionally well and would be the kind of person you are looking for.

Amazing opportunity, thank you for doing this! I submitted my application by PM (hope you got it). I felt that I'm a near perfect candidate, but then everybody seems to think that about themselves, so I don't know anymore

I only have one question: how do you play 70 tables??? Isn't stars allowing maximum 24?

P.S. Your ideal candidate seems impossible Smart enough to be able to handle your program, not have any better prospects in life than poker, can 20-table, have 2k bankroll, but be breakeven? That being said, I think I am pretty close. Good luck to all applicants!
