First off, are they profitable?

Nope

I played three $1 BTCs today and can confirm they are profitable. On the final hand a player literally gave me 2 BI.

    Poker Stars, $0.90 Buy-in (500/1,000 blinds, 200 ante) No Limit Hold'em Tournament, 4 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

    Hero (BTN): 22,280 (22.3 bb)
    SB: 10,040 (10 bb)
    BB: 20,080 (20.1 bb)
    CO: 19,220 (19.2 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with K Q
CO calls 1,000, Hero raises to 22,080 and is all-in, SB calls 9,340 and is all-in, 2 folds

    Flop: (22,480) 6 Q J (2 players, 2 are all-in)
    Turn: (22,480) 5 (2 players, 2 are all-in)
    River: (22,480) J (2 players, 2 are all-in)

    Results: 22,480 pot
    Final Board: 6 Q J 5 J
    Hero showed K Q and won 22,480 (12,440 net)
SB showed 9 2 and lost (-10,040 net)

But seriously - if you don't think getting dealt 4-5 hands per level, and maybe VPIPping 2-3 hands per level is beatable, then neither are - for example - turbo 18 mans where you maybe VPIP 1 hand per level and also pay 10% rake. Ok - you play more levels though I admit.

However, if you're good enough to beat BTCs there are plenty of better ways to use your time playing something more like real poker - or something similar but less heavily raked. There is a rival site which offers 1% rake on a 10BB cashgame for example.

10% rake with 1 minute blinds. optimum strat is to sweep the streets

It's mainly that you get only 5 levels.

Given that it's zoom, getting at least 1 chance per level in each of the BB, SB, BTN and CO is a lot more generous than the turbos most people on here play. Yes - you don't get to play HJ, LJ U7, U8 and U9 positions, but you also don't face raises from those positions, so that's ok.

The standard of play is maybe higher than in BTC though.

Incidentally, if you take the "challenge" offer and play 3 $1 BTCs - maybe at the start or end of a session while you are waiting for tables to fill up, you get entered as one of 20000 people in a $10000 all-in knockout - so in that case you are +EV unless you are losing a lot of EV to the field in push-fold poker - which I doubt.

At the moment I am logging on to PS every day, taking my net 20 cents subsidy and then going to play elsewhere. I did my 3 in bed on the tablet today

Basically this money comes from future dumb investors who need to be convinced PS has a winning new game format.

From what I have seen they are profitable but only because most players don't adjust there range in accordance with their stack size. On the final level players will call your all in for 22,000 chips (22BB) with K10 or A2. The only way to make money is going to be making big stacks make mistakes.
