2/180: Semi FT 88 3 bet

Villain and me were chips for the most of the time. I was more active and managed to make a good stack. I respect villain's raises who runs 28/26 57 steal over 40+ hands. Once villain 3-bet me pre and I folded AT. In the last orbit I was folding every hand trying to fix my image.

Grabbed by Holdem Manager
NL Holdem $1,200(BB) Replayer
SB ($9,675)
BB ($6,977)
UTG ($25,777)
UTG+1 ($8,281)
UTG+2 ($12,805)
MP1 ($17,360)
MP2 ($18,660)
Hero ($25,594)
BTN ($10,319)

Dealt to Hero 8 8

UTG raises to $2,400, fold, fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to $5,100, fold, fold, fold, fold

Hero shows 8 8

Hero wins $7,725

I would have folded to 4-bet.

Re: 2/180: Semi FT 88 3 bet

meh awkward spot

I don't love 3b/f because villain should be on a pretty strong range given he opened from UTG and the fact that he's committed to call a bunch of shorties. It's just pretty hard to play this hand profitably vs someone opening with just the top 10-11% of hands.

Not really sure how I'd procede...don't think folding is too bad. I'd be tempted to 3b/c 99 more.

Re: 2/180: Semi FT 88 3 bet

seems like a fold. his opening range UTG is way ahead of 88. i would prolly jam 99-JJ.AQ,AK(maybe AJs as well). 5100/c w QQ-AA, prolly would put hands like KQ, AT into my 3b/f range. They block a lot of nut combos, 3b/f AT KQ is way better than 3b/f 88.

great insight! I'll try to remember this important concept.

Actually, if I intend to fold to 4-bet, hand doesnt matter. Maybe I have to pollarize my range in such spots. 88 is definentely out of this range.

It does. 88 -> six combinations of AA, sixteen combinations of AK, four combinations of TT and only one of 88 (which he probably folds) are left.
AT -> three combinations of AA, twelve combinations of AK, one combination of TT and four of 88.

-> The whole gist of 3b/folding hands with blockers is exactly that. Block parts of his 4betting rang, which results in him folding more often which in turns makes your bluff (which 3b/folding is) more profitable.

Re: 2/180: Semi FT 88 3 bet

28/26 57% steal is no range to be respekkin!! But sized 3betting here is pretty dodgy unless you have a ton of meta with him that enables you to induce with 88. He might be laggy enough to 4b shove 77/KQ to which folding would obv be bad. Just shove.

fold pre, 88 against his utg opening range are behind imo, and on 20BB I don't 3bet/fold because I am left with 5-6BB less after my 3bet
