Optimize Android application before release
I kind of just got lucky that I was the first one to show up and suggest that he just profile it. And then some quick googling to find a good link. The bounty was offered after my and the next top answer were posted.

Funny side note: I've never done any work with Android.

That's why you learn stuff well though, you see an interesting question, research it and give an answer

Yeah. I know Java, so I can do ok on Android questions if they don't go into a lot of framework stuff. That's what's holding me back on C# questions. Don't do ASP and haven't used Hibernate or the 4.0 goodies like LINQ.

After a while it becomes addictive. I've got the Fanatic badge on SO and I'm halfway there on Programmers. I also sit at a computer all day at work, so that helps. It even prompted a question to ask.

Now that is just silly.

this is kind of why stackoverflow is silly. people are more involved with points than actual interesting discussion. sure, flame me for saying this.

im happy SO exists, it has saved me a couple of times and i'm generally happy when i see it come up in <random google search>. however, if you really want to future your programming knowledge there are much better ways to do so than whoring SO points.


ps: i wanted to thank you for placemint, i think its an awesome tool that i've had installed on everyone one of my windows machines for the last 3 or so years.

I would guess that you haven't used it much, because I see a lot of people that whore points but they never stick around for long. The entire system is built around producing quality peer reviewed content/questions and answers.

There are also some excellent discussions and questions on that site if you look! The majority are small help me requests, but there are some amazing questions and answers on that site.

Within a short space of time it's significantly improved my knowledge and skills. You say there are better ways, can you give examples? The problem is, some people learn better from reading books, static resources, other people like me find interaction and Q&A type systems a much more efficient and enjoyable way to learn.

I'm not gonna lie, I started out continually refreshing the unanswered page sorted by newest. But once I got a the useful privilledges, it shifted to a natural flow of reading questions that seem interesting.

You're welcome. It has been a lot of fun and I've learned a lot. I'm going to have some time this summer and plan on cleaning up the code a bunch.

Nope. Books are valuable if you're learning. I think books are less valuable if you're *doing*. That is, *reference* books lose value as the Internet grows.

The only good thing about Q&A style resources like SO is that you can potentially get your question answered in a number of different ways. You have more chances of getting a response that makes sense to you.

I really like the way stack overflow works. I think that by allowing users to upvote the best answer makes the questions much more readable.

A lot of the time when I search for a solution to a program related problem, if I find someone has posted a similar question on a forum, you have to troll through all the answers until you find one that works, not knowing if it is event the best solution.

With stack overflow, you know what the best solution is because it has, in effect, been 'peer reviewed'.

Yeah, I personally still buy/use books when I want to get my head around the core of a new technology/concept quickly. THEN, I'll almost exclusively use the Internet when I actually implement/do stuff.

I was just skimming it again, the user 'Darse' I believe is Darse Billings from the University of Alberta Research group, I think I pointed to the thread in an email, and he was great to email with the odd question as well back then. I think some of his posts were overlooked unfortunately!

Slideshare is good and all but sometime trying to track down the videos they came from is pretty difficult but usually they are out there.

It would probably be too much effort to include resources since that will change too much and Google is better suited towards that but videos remain to be useful even if some of the examples they use are from out dated builds.

Does this person even exist? And even if he or she did, wouldn't their phone be ringing off the hook from head hunters? And wouldn't this person sort of laugh at this and wonder why the offered salary isn't around 300k?

yeah i also cannot imagine why you would need such a person. maybe a team member of a development house that supports all those languages just in case a client requests one?
