Our customer is not the end user, so its tougher for us to get an accurate picture of the end user experience.

Our customer spent a lot of money training their users, so changing anything doesn't make sense for them. And I'm sure the actual end user's concern is mostly familiarity.

But I believe that a UX can be objectively bad. One metric is how intuitive it is to use for someone that hasn't been specifically trained for it. And this UI breaks so many established best practices and violates the principle of least surprise in many ways. Besides that, its butt-ugly.

On one hand you lasted a ton longer than you probably should have if they had been doing vetting correctly!

300 players have uploaded cardbacks since I put them in! Crazy. And you need 50 games played to unlock that (5-15 minutes per game). I'd be proud if I actually made the game/rules but w/e I'll take it.

Pretty neat. It's nice to make stuff that people appear to actually like.

I'm going multiple rounds with Brendan Eich on twitter. Dude is way too smart to fall for those alt-right charlatans.

Ha, I see suzzer is getting in on the action as well.

He self bans here and can't help himself.

Yeah that self-ban is working out great. Would be nice if the world could just stop being on fire for a couple weeks.

I knew about Eich's gay marriage thing but if he's really a deplorable I feel pretty bad =/ I just hoped he was some religious guy. Oh well.

You know it's bad when you have to ban your gimmick. Also do you have an alert on the ban me thread? That was like 30 seconds ago.

You may see a new account posting itt - which is a valuable reference for me. Please be nice to it. If you see it also posting in politics - burn it with fire.

I've often had the same predicament (wanting to be able to post in this forum only, or any non-politics forum).

It's possible you could get a pre-emptive exile applied to your account? I'm actually not sure how that works.

I'd suggest some basic self-control which you appear to be lacking in if you need to request a preemptive ban for a third account to refrain from commenting in a politics thread.

Dunno. I manage to read OOT without posting in OOT. Then again I only have 2+ years without a perma on this account, so a pretty short history of this actually working.

Jesus christ if you write javascript at all go run prettier on your crap from the cli then install it for your editor. Literally 5-15% savings in time/effort to make stuff go.

So day 2 at new job at GIANTCO.

Given a skylake HP with 16gb ram and... windows 7. Git bash is ~5 second delay between commands so doing command line stuff with cmd.exe. Windows 7 or bloatware, who knows?

Cannot download anything or run .exes but no surprise there.

Usual netnanny sites blocked, but not reddit or imgur. OK?

Cannot set default browser?

Cannot globally install npm packages i.e. update the PATH env variable? But can run them if I type out their real path. Fun.

No problem installing git from their "appstore" though. Because I couldn't just clone in a virus and run it? I couldn't just use curl from git bash to curl in an exe virus?

No problem with people bringing in their personal cell phones because they couldn't just take a picture of their screen to steal sensitive information?

And heres the worst: chrome extensions blocked. Firefox? No problem!

Can you install cygwin? That's usually step one for me on a windows machine. Although I suppose there is sort of some legit linux/bash stuff for windows now, that might be OK, although at this point I know cygwin so well I probably just prefer it.

It all sounds awful, imo. I have turned down every interview I've ever gotten for large companies after my first few experiences. Just not for me. As a result I've almost never worked anywhere anyone has ever heard of. I've probably only had one job my family could explain to a 3rd party without help.

I feel like this has to be a bug...

In mysql, you have to acquire a "metadata lock" in order to alter a table - this includes adding an index. OK. You also have to acquire such a lock to perform a select on a table. This prevents a table from being altered while a query is running.

But when I try to add an index to our prod system, it stalls waiting for a metadata lock. At the same time, ALL new queries to the table ALSO stall waiting for a metadata lock. No one can acquire a lock, and eventually everything grinds to a halt.

Allegedly the locks will resolve when the timeout value is reached - 28,800 seconds later. Either my user doesn't have permissions to alter this timeout, or, more likely, RDS just doesn't permit it to be changed at the session level.

I really wish I'd insisted we port everything to postgres a year ago

Is there a long running select query that starts before the index operation?

No - all selects against this table are very brief - a few ms at the most. Normally you can't even catch them if you're monitoring what each thread is doing

On an unrelated note I noticed our traffic was almost double today. Upon looking into it, all the extra requests are coming from one dude is who requesting a single API endpoint with random page number values in the 10s and 100s of thousands (there are only a few hundred pages). I sent him a polite email asking him to knock it off.
