If you live in the USA, this would not legally count as a contracting position. If you used their equipment (especially if you are required to use their computers), you are most likely classified as an employee, regardless if you were working under a 1099 or W2.

Gullanian, do you have any logs for the Railgun errors?

tail -f /var/log/messages

find "railgun" and be sure to keep the exact case since grep is case-sensitive:

tail -f /var/log/messages | grep "railgun"

If that's nothing helpful, then try cat to get all the messages:

cat -f /var/log/messages | grep "railgun"

It's been awhile since I dealt with this, but I think the computer usage is only part of the determination (as referenced by your link as well).

I've definitely worked with contractors that used company computers in the past.

This is probably true of the vast majority of contract workers though - it only matters if you, individually or as part of a class, want to take this to court. This is another why the whole "I'll take twice the pay if I'm contracting" is nonsense and why most contracting is done through a third-party vendor, which insulates clients from the legal risk.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

I had another interview. This time the guy didn't realize that I had no prior job experience. I don't know if he looked at my code and went off that or didn't look at anything at all before scheduling the phone call (which lasted only 17 mins).

Well, at least my next interview is with someone who I know has actually seen my code and (I think) knows that I have no prior job experience.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

I'm studying for my Spanish test with Excel, blown up to 125%. One word/cell (PERDER) in the whole spreadsheet is fried-looking. If I change the zoom it fixes itself, but scrolling doesn't matter.

How can this even happen?

That's weird, does that cell have some weird conditional formatting turned on? If you open another spreadsheet is it the same cell?

Right, I'm trying to be somewhat careful with my language. I'm probably not careful enough.

But not really talking about court cases, but rather something innocuous like collecting unemployment.

It's not really what I said. I said it's easier / more likely to get contracting / remote work using languages with a dearth people who are good at it, due to a lack of local talent.

IRT to contracting -vs- employment specific to me, It's easier for me to say "I can do this for $X in Y time" than saying "I am better than person B because..." I don't have a good sense of comparison to other people. Also, the former is low-risk for both the person and the company; the latter is higher risk for both. The point is that my thoughts aren't universal to all people, just something to consider.

In the cases I'm talking about, the company is looking at a 10 to 50 KLOC code base that needs to be fixed or continued. The person who built the product did the best they could, for better or worse, and can't continue, or the person responsible for the code quit and the company has no real options. I never once got a call for a contracting position in Python, (though I'm very good at it) because they can put an ad up on Indeed and get 100 local applicants over night.

I don't want to discourage you at all. I'm rooting for you to get that awesome remote / relo position.

I asked about Shopify earlier.

I swear I'd never write something like this about any product, but... it's magic.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

So last night, a player who about 400 games played, of which last 3-15 minutes, and had the username of "NateHiggers", ate a ban from me rather than change his name (and keep his fairly impressive stats).

Oh internet.

Re: ** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD **

In my time at 2+2 I've asked several people to take a name change - several have accepted, which actually really surprised me. Most of them said that in retrospect it was dumb to have an offensive name. (None were as offensive as that one, though, here I don't think we'd ask for a name like that, we'd just instaban)

I'm struggling with how to approach this problem. Part of it is my game is somewhat adult themed (not porn just a sensitive subject). Due to my above post I'm putting in a basic regex matching block list and right now is just the very obvious racist and antisemitic ones. I don't really care about porn or swears so whatever, I mean who can't laugh at losing to someone named "penispenispenis". The wife wanted "pussy" banned (but not the c-word oddly) and I was like.. eh.

I have no idea how to IP ban people as I reverse proxy through nginx and thats not at all a thing I am good at. But if this thing grows to 100+ players on at a time which I think it will I will need to find a moderator style solution.

I think only red admins can manage that here.
