Yep I totally agree with that. But I don't think having some bitcoin or using it to send money or ethereum or whatever is a dumb idea. I just find it silly when people find it a dumb idea to buy/use bitcoin and a "zomg look at stupid people valuing some fake monies".

Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.

ya bitcoin is pretty cool and who cares if you put .1 to 5% of your net worth in it? I mean, ya it would be pretty dumb to just convert everything to bitcoin but is anyone really advocating that?

and you can use it to play poker and buy certain items so it does serve some purpose for some ppl.

It's more than that. One is backed by a giant army and police force, and (in the US) you are required to accept it as payment for goods/services. That's a pretty big difference.

Hah, we're not even there yet. This thread is still at the stage of learning basic, generally accepted, economic principles/facts/terms.

I have been living in my car for 4 and a half years beside the ocean in San Francisco. The Pacific has done insurmountable damage to my car, rust has taken all of the door handles and the unforgiving wind took the hood one fateful night.

I have been a software engineer for over 30 years and am working on a new product which will be ready in a few months. However, I worry every waking moment that my car won't last until the product is ready.

I deperately need your help to keep a roof over my head and 4 doors around me until I can complete this product and get back on my feet. Any support you can provide will me much more than sincerely apprecaited.
Lol - poor George. I'd donate but that's not the most compelling story.

Larry, funny enough I just got done talking to a recruiter who's client wants a JS engineer, mainly react. Unfortunately it is the same company that I totally put off building a simple front end for them because I wanted to learn more and present a better product... stupid me. Tonight I'm going to build a Django/react app to pass on to the recruiter. Hopefully they forgot about me so I can come in fresh.

What's my move here? I'm going to build the app because I want the experience. But what about the recruiter and company? Bring up the fact that I'm that guy that 3 weeks ago I totally lost track of their request?

Do nothing until the recruiter passes your resume to the client and they want to still talk. They probably have no idea.

so I was listening to the radio and npr had a piece on the most recent "silk road" getting shut down. cant remember the name of it right now. anyway, they said it was moving billions a month and dude running it had a bunch of property in multiple countries seized along with a lambo. dude died in a thai prison btw.

anyway, when they were listing his lavish lifestyle, they also mentioned, and they actually built this part up, that he had a whole...wait for it....8 mirrion in bitcoins/ethereum.

so ya, I really dont think the govt is able to track all of this money.

how did HackerRank get so popular? The entire thing is AIDS. They cant even color code for syntax. It looks like something out of 2003. Exercism.io is so much better.

this article gives different figures:

According to Greg Jones, a dark web market watcher at F-Secure's Digital Assurance company, as many as $2 million in trades were being done over AlphaBay every week as of April this year. He based those on scraping profiles and sales data from the site. And between May 2015 and February 2017, as much as $450 million in cryptocurrency had been spent through AlphaBay, according to a court filing unsealed today.
when you add up the market capitalization of all the crypto currency, it seems pretty small. If there is 75 billion in coinz and this market is 750m/year... we are still around 1% give or take for other markets, etc. also, as you mentioned, if they are buying houses that means they are getting rid of the coinz... which means even more speculators.

hackerrank interview crap:

your friend is in prison with a window made up of vertical bars and horizontal bars. he can remove bars before the prison guard shows up. given numberofbars, let him know how big of a hole he can make?

first test case
numberofbars = 6, expected output from algorithm = 49

if you draw 6 lines like bars horizontally and vertically there are 49 cells but what in the name of hell?

if the bars are 6 feet for example, you still cant get more than a 36 feet squared hole.

STRAIGHT AIDS.

Yes, if that is the question it is poorly worded and not clear. Implied units of the hole is some sort of area; square inches, square feet, square centimeters, square meters, etc. Number of bars is a scaler. I can think of questions relating bar dimensions to the size of the hole that could be asked.

If the H-bars and V-bars do not have to be uniformly sized then this is solvable, no?

Still, it's just a brain teaser and brain teasers have been shown to be a poor predictor of job performance.

If this were the real world, I'd throw this back to my product owner with a big red "unclear requirements" stamp.

I'm dumb... if there are 6 bars total, 3 horizontal and 3 vertical, and they are 7 feet, then the hole is 49 sq.ft if you remove 6 bars (all of them).

Not quite sure I understood that question, and I frequently do problems in hackerrank for fun. The questions they put on there are a lot more interesting than something like leetcode.

If this was given my an employer, they can write their own tests which could be crap, so not necessarily hackerrank's fault here.
