Struggling through AppAcademy prepwork

Hi, I have no programming experience but I have recently began the application process to join AppAcademy. A part of the application process is to make it through basic programming exercises which they give an outline for and then give you practice problems to solve to sharpen your skills in order to prepare you for a timed exercise. I worked through the introduction several times and I have just started working through the practice problems. I am having a very tough time absorbing everything and am planning on just going through it over and over again until it starts making sense. It seems like some of the material required for the practice problems is not specifically covered by the intro material but that may just be by design. I'm not really sure. For those of you that have gone through this or a similar process have any advice? I am not just looking for advice, any insight into your experience would be great as well.
Thanks

Thanks for the heads up. I noticed it just after I posted this, should've searched first.

Read Chris Pine's "Learn to Program", and solve every problem in the book as you read. There are free versions available.
It used to be what AA recommended until they wrote their own stuff.

AA prep stuff has almost nothing to do with their practice problems if I recall correctly.
