Starting to learn Java. Help!!

Hey guys, I'm attempting to start learning Java through Java for Dummies.

I'm struggling getting the software required to get myself set up. The references in the book seem to be old and I'm unable to locate the various software. Any help or advice, links etc to get me set up?

Thanks in advance.

Well I got a little understanding of C and C#, but Java is part of a college course I'm starting in Sept so it's important that I learn it.

Amazing how a "Java for Dummies" book figures you're advanced enough to not bother teaching you how to set up a development environment...

You sure this was a good buy?

The book was from 2005, the links in it do not exist. I did not buy it.

Well don't know whether it's the coders or the java virtual machine setup that end user have to use to get java to work on their sytem but my answer is...

Implementation and correct functionality is not there yet. By this I mean crashes and lock up of systems, massive resource uses of java programs, and basically **** not working. Most of this has not been a problem for me since I've been using windows 7, but I have a feeling it is for people still on XP.

I'd advise getting a new book, java is always changing and updating their syntax I believe it's called , I took a class in 03, 05, and 08 and had to learn changes every time for the newest java version.

I do not understand. First, I'm not sure how the "crashes and lock up of systems" are Java's fault. Second I'm not sure judging how something works on a 10+ year old operating system is a fair measurement of how good something is.

don't worry, java is a much friendlier language than C++.

mostly the syntax doesn't change too much, what its always changing or updating is libraries/api's

Implementation and correct functionality don't depend on the language, they depend on developers

and nowdays java is used to make high demand aplications and they work perfectly
