We'll hire people without really solid academic backgrounds if they can show that they've done real things. And we regularly turn down people that have solid PhD backgrounds but have never done anything outside of academia.

i think many people think ML jobs are all about doing cutting edge research. But many (most?) are much more about figuring out how to apply existing algorithms/concepts to specific use cases. It requires a different skill set. One more focused on implementing a white paper than writing one.

have you looked at the GA Tech online MS in CS? I haven't seen any reviews on it but it's like $5000 and I think there is a focus in ML. it's 10 courses iirc.

I'm about 90% through my MS in CS (machine learning), and I think you can take 2 approaches with that:
(1) focus on optimization (better for research imo),
(2) focus on statistics and statistical ML (better for industry imo).

looking back, I think I should have taken more stats. I'm finding advanced stats classes to be the hardest to find online.

imo those are the areas where you can stand out. there is no shortage of people who can run scikit-learn or glmnet and make pretty dashboards in Tableau.

Yep, this is the exact program I'm aiming for. I need some preparation before I'm ready to start, but I'm probably going to study independently and then apply to the program directly next year.

Are you looking for stats courses for credit or independent study? I'm planning to cover optimization(key for poker) and statistics pretty heavily. I'm studying a 50:50 ratio of cs:math right now.

If you didn't see in the lc thread, a guy (not here) taking the online ms plan got a job at Google simply by searching for terms related to his studies
