I'd like to hear this too.

I like to think that if I were to attempt to find some jobs online that one of the advantages I have over the Asian/East European army is that that I speak English deliciously.

I would love to hear stories from people saying "Yeah, I got some dude on elance to write me a site. All the content was in Russian, incomplete and I never heard from the guy again".

Heh, that's actually quite the code quality issue as well. Non-English code is just WTF-lolbad. There's a lot of people in Germany who use German method names and whatnot.

I am chuckling at the idea of a private function gotterdammerung() being in code somewhere

Weird angle on free-lancing sites:

My quick background: Hopefully at some point in the future, I'll get around to finishing my doctorate in comp sci. I've taught a variety of labs and courses in the discipline.

There's a real cottage industry of students outsourcing their assignments to these free lancing sites, usually in a really stupid way. On a few occasions profs from my institution have been contacted by a (retired?) prof from England who reads these free lancing sites regularly, and where possible follows up with course instructors who's assignments have been posted for tender. (In most cases the student neglected to remote the course / instructor info).

Couple of interesting points:
- usually the assignments are horribly misinterpreted and/or plagiarized from elsewhere.
- often times students will use their real names on these sites, and have used a site multiple times, so when a single instance is discovered, they'll also be investigated for prior work.
- most institutions don't have language in their academic misconduct policies that make it misconduct for soliciting someone to do your assignment for you, i've heard a few are looking to change this.

In looking at these sites I've never seen anywhere near a fair wage offered for anything. A prime example was last summer I came across someone hoping to develop an entire online poker site for $1500 USD (they even explicitly cited Full Tilt as a feature set they'd like to duplicate).

USD$1500 probably gets you lots of rupees...

...I'm getting sick of making "lol USD" jokes.... but obv have to add:

...not as many as it used to though!

It does, but it only amounts to a software engineers monthly take in a major center like Bangalore, you could probably get 2 months in some parts of the country where cost of living is less.
